Enough for a thirteenth birthday?

Hey all, my eldest DD is 13 tomorrow (how'd that happen?)

She asked for a laptop which I have got her, second hand for £150 as I have 4DC and not a whole lot of money.

Her grandma got her the I phone 5s second hand for her birthday (also not a lot of money) as my dd had broken her android phone.

She is having a birthday party but just at the house, with her choice of party food and a couple of her friends for a sleep over.

I haven't got her anything else but the laptop.

It feels like a pretty dire thirteenth, AIBU with it being a milestone birthday?

Perfectly fine- it isn't a milestone anyway!

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 03/04/2018 22:39

it sounds lovely. You've done her proud

Outnotdown · 03/04/2018 22:40

I think that sounds great! Hope she has a lovely day

Highfever · 03/04/2018 22:40

She's very very lucky!

Puffycat · 03/04/2018 22:41

That sounds like a great 13th! Your DC has got 2 great presents, she’s going to be surrounded by her mates and we all know how much a teenager loves a sleepover!
Worry not!

Orchidflower1 · 03/04/2018 22:43

Sounds lovely - hope the sleep over / giggling all night goes well.

Puffycat · 03/04/2018 22:44

Plus her mates will bring cards, make stuff for her (like funny in jokes on cards) and probably give her daft little things. She will have a great time!

My eldest DD is 13 tomorrow too 😁And I'm having the same worries. We've ordered her a second hand iPhone 6S but it hasn't arrived yet. We are on holiday and she's got a small pile of a few bits. PJs, toiletries, a mug, jewellery etc. She's not having her party til May but we are going out for the day and our for tea. I think what your DD has got seems fine. Make her a nice breakfast, make a fuss of her And she'll love it. Btw I can't believe mine is 13 either 😁😁

Samantha2018 · 03/04/2018 22:47

I always feel the same when I buy one large gift, if you can afford it just afew bits and bobs eg make up? Primark bits? If not she’s still incredibly lucky so don’t worry too much

CollyWombles · 03/04/2018 22:50

Thank you, I feel a bit more reassured. I know that a laptop and phone is great, even second hand, I know deep down she will have a great time, it's just some weird parenting thing that makes me think it should be more.

My DH said to take her into town tomorrow, I will treat her to a few small bits from primark, I know there is a jumper she would like and I think she will have a bit of spending money from my dad too.

Is 13 not a milestone? Becoming a teenager? I can't even remember my 13th actually.

@highlystrung big happy birthday to your DD tomorrow too! Same day buddies, what time was yours born? My DD made an appearance at 03:27 complete with a massive purple ring around her head because she refused to shift for three hours in the pushing stage!

My DS is 13 tomorrow too. From us he has some clothes as presents to open tomorrow. He is having a paint balling party and I think we may cave and get him an iPhone but only if we can sort a couple of issues with him. I don't think he needs big presents to open (not because I'm mean but because he gets lots of stuff and I want him to appreciate rather than expect). What you've got sounds perfect.

CollyWombles · 03/04/2018 22:57

@clarinsgirl happy birthday for tomorrow for your DS too! Paint balling sounds fantastic!

I asked DD what she would like to do for her birthday, but we are limited again because I don't drive. She could have gone swimming or to the cinema but she didn't fancy either of those.

She has been wanting her hair dip dyed for ages but I keep putting off because I really don't like the look of it and she has such beautiful red hair. It will only look good for a short while then will fade and she will hate it.

My DH is back at work tomorrow so whatever I do, it will have to be with all four of my DC and with the youngest being autistic, he can be a bit of a handful.

I'm sure it will be fine, I'm just thinking back to the days she was little and technology wasn't a big thing to her, she used to have piles of presents.

Happy birthday to all the other 4/4/05 babies 😁😁 Mine was born at 1.30 ish in the afternoon after a three day bloody labour. Was hell. I remember vividly the Pope being ill, dying and a new one being announced all during my labour. Oh and they should've been born on the 3rd for a better date of birth (03,04,05 😁). Mine had a conical head due to ventouse.

highlystrung · 03/04/2018 23:01

We are doing a pottery thing tomorrow and then she wanted to go shopping. She's very excited - even though she knows her main present hasn't arrived. Think they just love being centre of attention for the day.

highlystrung · 03/04/2018 23:01

Mine has red hair too!!

clarinsgirl · 03/04/2018 23:05

Yes, gifts definitely become harder as they get older. I think this is a really tricky age. If I bought my DS what he really wanted it would be a load of credit on his Xbox and that's just not happening.

He was born at 11.30 at night by emcs after being in labour since the Friday night. He should have been born on 24/3 😩

Pimmsypimms · 03/04/2018 23:11

My dd turned 13 last month and she didn’t have a mountain of prezzies like she did when she was younger.
Maybe pick up some pamper bits for her sleepover? My dd had a few friends for a sleepover too and I bought them face masks and did them pedicures and they watched a movie and had popcorn and snacks. I bet she’ll have a fab time!!
