To think as you get older birthdays are under whelming

I don’t know if it’s because I turned 30 today, but anyone just find birthdays underwhelming. My kids were more excited than me, my mum too who actually can’t belive she has a 30year old daughter. And I think my DP is excited because it means I’m in the same age range as him.
Don’t get me wrong I had a good day and a great meal at the weekend I just find it all a bit boring as you get older.

I'm 50 and still like birthdays. Mine's in the school holidays, so I take the DC out for lunch and buy myself some autumn clothes.

The day itself should involve sex and champagne. Two things I definitely couldn't have for my birthdays when I was younger.

I have two pieces of advice for enjoying your birthday as an adult:

  1. If your birthday falls on a working day, postpone the main celebration until the weekend. On the day, open your cards and presents and in the evening, have a take-away or low effort favourite meal prepared by someone else with a treat drink of your choice.
  1. At the weekend, have a day out or evening out of your choice. Yeah, yeah, lots of us would love a weekend in New York but that's not a reasonable expectation for most of us. And dinner out isn't the only option. I love going to London for the day to see an art exhibition, followed by lunch. Or a theatre matinee. Or a film of my choice followed by lunch. Or a day at a National Trust place. These are all things that my family would not choose to do for themselves but it's my day, so I get to choose and it makes me happy that they will do these things with me to please me.

It's my birthday soon. We are on holiday traveling around, my partner has planned for us to visit a new country for my birthday , so I am excited to find out where we are going, I won't know until we get to the airport !

When I was a child a lot of what made a birthday was the family time, the homemade cake, the nice meal, the time spent together- and yes, a few gifts, sometimes off my wish list, sometimes not. I can still have all those things for my birthday, the gifts may be slightly less exciting (as I can now afford to buy things for myself), but my appreciation of nice things to eat hasn't lessened over the years, and my appreciation of family time has grown, if anything. I'm in my 50s btw.

It’s my birthday on Thursday and we’re currently on holiday in a country we used to live in - we’re cramming in as many visits with friends as we can while we’re here and I tend to be the point of contact for everyone. We had tentative plans with friends for today, but yesterday they sent me a message asking if we could change to Thursday night. I said “yes of course” without a second thought, told DH and he responded with “so are we not doing something specific for your birthday?” I had completely forgotten and even when he said it I had to think for a second to make sure he was right. Blush The ridiculous thing is that it’s my niece’s birthday tomorrow and I had already said earlier in the day that I must remember to phone her on the day. Obviously I KNOW our birthdays are only 2 days apart, but somehow it had still totally evaded my brain that my birthday was this week!
