To be utterly baffled by buying lightbulbs these days!

It’s soooo confusing. It seems we have LED or halogen? And the two don’t mix. But the wattage is weird. What was wrong with 100w, 60w, and 40w.

Every time I pass the lightbulb section in the supermarket, there is some poor hapless person looking baffled.

Has anybody ever taken bulbs back after they have blown (usually 6 months, they say 25 years!!!!!) I think I may have to buy shares in a light bulb company!!

PinkBuffalo · 02/04/2018 19:28

YANBU! & I was that hapless person in poundland the other day, picking up every lightbulb box saying to myself "is this it?"

PinkBuffalo · 02/04/2018 19:29

And then coming away with one just hoping it's the right one rather than being sure!

callmeadoctor · 02/04/2018 19:29

I accidentally bought daylight bulbs the other day instead of warm light ones!!!!! Bloody awful they are!!

Ellybellyboo · 02/04/2018 19:29

Me too!

I had to get some today as the so called ‘long lasting’ bulbs have only lasted 6 months.

There were loads of of us looking totally flummoxed by the lightbulb section in B&Q. We were all having the same grumble

6 quid for 3 bulbs. Long lasting my arse

greenlanes · 02/04/2018 19:29

I am so laughing at this. This is me. I have Weezol's lightbulb cardboard collection but then because I am so stressed about this I keep the old light bulb and take them with me into the electrical wholesalers. My DC now refuse to go with me - it takes forever matching up the old with the new trend in lightbulbs. Add to that my refusal to pay £5+ for a lightbulb and it is an "interesting" afternoon. Luckily for me my local electrical wholesalers are VERY patient. No-other process makes me feel so old.

RunMummyRun68 · 02/04/2018 19:30

callme it's up to 25 years.

callmeadoctor · 02/04/2018 19:32

Ha ha RunMummy, of course it is "up to". Come to think of it, all advertisers can get away with this ploy! Wink

Chrys2017 · 02/04/2018 19:32

Lol at SilverySurfer thinking Brexit will bring back incandescent lightbulbs grin

You can still buy incandescent bulbs online—they're labelled/marketed as "rough service" bulbs. I had to buy some for an old touch-control lamp. Not sure if they work in the new-fangled light fittings though!

Oddcat · 02/04/2018 19:33

I have 29 of the fuckers in my kitchen alone !! Sad. I also bought daylight ones and feel as if I am permanently on a sunbed.

Ginkypig · 02/04/2018 19:33

Ok so on that picture which of them works out the same as an old style 60w or 100w bulb because I still don't think I get it. Blush

greenlanes · 02/04/2018 19:34

Callmeadoctor - yes I have tried that. Before i set my price limit on lightbulbs. I once spent £3-50 per lightbulb for a modern light that required 8 of the buggers. When they all blew within the year I took them all back to the shop. When I was told that it was my fault because I hadnt handled them properly I was very patient. You would all be proud. I asked politely how they informed customers before sale how to handle lightbulbs. They didnt apparently bother because "everyone" knew how. 10 years on - I have never shopped there since. Judging by how quickly all the bloody lightbulbs blow they have lost a small fortune in sales. It is ridiculous.

callmeadoctor · 02/04/2018 19:34

I am going back to rough service bulbs, a whole lot easier. And don't get me started on my 6 chandeliers with 9 candle bulbs in each. The new ones all have the labels on show on the bottom of the candle which look awful in a chandelier.

SnowJokeAnymore · 02/04/2018 19:35

I am having trouble getting a bulb to fit a lamp. No longer stocking them at the supermarket.

callmeadoctor · 02/04/2018 19:35

Well done Green, did you get your money back?

callmeadoctor · 02/04/2018 19:37

I am intrigued about bulbs though, what do shops do about returns.

WhollyFather · 02/04/2018 19:38

The LED 'temperature' is not the actual temp of the bulb but of the colour of the light emitted. Technical stuff if you're bothered The higher the number the bluer the light.

This is quite helpful explaining the difference in practical terms.

And there is no reason we could not go back to incandescent bulbs after we leave the EU if that's what people want. I would.

Muddlingalongalone · 02/04/2018 19:38

I recommend taking the old one with you and looking lost in Wickes.
Someone always helps me (a passer by rather than a member of staff- they're like gold dust 😂)
Yadnbu though. I have a shelf full of bulbs that don't fit/are ridiculously bright etc

greenlanes · 02/04/2018 19:39

No I did not. Add to that the patronising tone and I was done. I may be utterly incompetent at DIY but with a bit of help i can manage. As I say I have never shopped there since and prefer to go to the electrical wholesalers who are knowledgeable and professional (and as cheap as it gets for lightbulbs).

But it is dreadful. I have vowed the next home I buy I am only having 1 type of light fitting and all lights must fit this.

Oddcat · 02/04/2018 19:41

I set off to B&Q quite positive that I know what bulb I need but as soon as I stand in front of the 59 billion different options I forget . I too have cupboards full of bulbs that don't fit any of my lights.

Maybe we could organise a bulb swap .

planetclom · 02/04/2018 19:50

Oh thank god! I went to live abroad 10 years ago for three years and I came back to the John Lewis "traditional" ads which I had never heard of before and eleventy billion fuffing light bulbs I thought I had missed the memo.

seventh · 02/04/2018 19:52

I can't cope with the new fangled-ness.
I go to poundstretcher and buy the old fashioned lightbulbs.

And they are super cheap too!

SnowJokeAnymore · 02/04/2018 19:57

As of this week I can join in bulb swap!

CoperCabana · 02/04/2018 20:03

I bought daylight bulbs for my utility. Now both me and the utility room are depressed! Grin

AnarchyKitty · 02/04/2018 20:03

I have found my people!!
I have actually given up in the front room this week and am using my vast collection of candle's until our little hardware shop reopens as they allegedly sell old style bulbs. There's almost a black market in them round here. Grin
