To want to believe in something mysterious?

I know IABU really.

I'd really love to have a religion. I'd love to believe something was watching over me.

I'd also like to believe in mysterious energy flow rules of the universe, or ghosts or homeopathy. I think it'd add a bit of fun to my life..

The thing is, my scientific background would argue against most of the above, and without evidence, I struggle with the idea of a god. (I also believe a kind god would understand this struggle.)

I just think it'd add an interesting dimension.

I know I am a bit unreasonable really! Wondering if anyone understands where I'm coming from.

That's it OP, takes practice, the more the mind can be quietened, the true self can shine.

Another scientist here, I practice Reiki and more recently have returned to my Catholic faith after a break of over 40 years. Met some wonderful people which is basically what it is all about to a great extent. I have however found parallels with Reiki and Religion even though Reiki does not have a religious dogma attached to it. I trained in Reiki with a lady vicar who likened it to receiving the Holy Spirit when she was ordained

I completely understand OP.

I have tried and tried to believe in the mystic in various guises however I just cant.

My rational mind just means I can't

I know what you mean OP, I would love to have a faith. I think those who do have a comfort, a cornerstone, and answers to life's big questions in a way that I don't. But I simply cannot believe, it makes no sense to me.

GirlsBlouse17 · 02/04/2018 20:41

I think of science as the rules that God put in place for everything to work. I feel God all around me. I know there are many things in our world that make the idea of a God questionable but I have my faith and my belief is strong

We're all made of star dust. Technically, we are. Try that one.

Dangerousmonkey · 02/04/2018 21:51

Some made up woo sky giant isn't necessary for my sense of wonder at the wonder if the world, the universe. It's all awesome in the sense of genuine awe.

Seryph · 02/04/2018 22:36

I'm pagan. I have animist beliefs. I'm also incredibly scientifically minded. To me, believing in spirit is understanding that on the smallest level as gussyfinknottle says, "we're all made of stardust". You, me, my cat (who is following something I can't see around the house), the wooden table, the rock I sat on in the park today. All of it is, in some small way the same or came from the same place.
There are things we do not understand, in medicine, physics, chemistry etc and spiritual belief is just one way to make sense of it.
I did have what I believe to be a religious experience years ago, which was either something odd psychologically or a genuine experience of something out side of myself. Various branches of physics instil the idea of there being more dimensions than those we can perceive, so who am I to suggest other energies or life does not exist there and can make themselves felt here in our dimension?
That's how I see it anyway.
