to ask any dentists here?....

any dentists here?

I have severe dental phobia.
Over 2 years ago I began having pain in the back R side of teeth.
after 10 ish months went to my usual dentist who took xrays and said it looked like I needed a root canal in my back molar. they could not do it due to my phobia so referred me to the hospital special care dept.
After a year I had my appointment (Dec) - they confirmed I needed the root canal doing - or tooth removing, and the tooth next to it needed a filling also.
This week I returned and had the tooth removed under sedation - it went well. The socket was left open and it is getting smaller and looks clean etc.
6 days post tooth removal the pain is worse than ever in the tooth next to it. The hole that needs filling is now open rather than covered by the removed tooth, the whole lower jaw is painful and it is throbbing all the way up to my ear.

I can only take paracetamol or oramorph due to medical problems with any other painkillers. I have been taking paracetamol regularly, but am in so much pain it is not doing much.

I can't contact the emergency number as my phobia is so severe I would need the special care clinic to see me - but I will phone them tuesday morning.

Is this normal? knowing there is a hole awaiting a filling in the tooth that is now the end tooth? even rubbing my tongue on it is painful :( (it is due to be filled may 1st)

Thanks for any advice!!!!

Sorry no advice but saw this unanswered and wanted to bump it for you in case anyone can reassure you it’s normal. Definitely ring the special clinic first thing Tuesday morning.

Can't you get temporary filling kits from boots etc? Sounds awful and like it needs filling tomorrow hopefully.

NinkyNonk1 · 02/04/2018 15:13

I'm not a dentist either but it sounds like it could be infected. Also regularly rinse with salt water. It could be the area where you had the tooth removed that's actually hurting but your feeling it in the next tooth. I have regular problems with my teeth and am on antibiotics for the same pain and having root canal done on it soon Thanks

Not a dentist but are you sure it’s not dry socket ( NHS link ) on the tooth that has been removed? I’ve had this once and it is very, very painful.
Dentist would usually put a temporary filling on any holes like the one you describe. You can buy temporary fillings kits from superdrug or boots if you need to patch a hole for a couple of days but you do risk further issues such as abscesses if you leave it patched too long without proper treatment.

Thanks for the responses.
I have no idea how big the hole is that needs filling and cannot see it due to where it is, but cannot touch that tooth at all due to pain.
Have followed dentists advice etc...but blood clot did come out quickly with the mouthwashing. As the socket is healing well, no swelling, smell, discharge i assumed no infection etc.
😕

Sounds like the tooth that needed a filling now needs a root canal. That’s a risk when you have to wait so long for special care appointments :/ sorry OP!

wowfudge · 02/04/2018 17:49

I was told not to rinse for 24 hours after a molar was removed (mine was a wisdom tooth). A blood clot coming out would not be expected. It sounds very much to me as though you have dry socket where the tooth was removed. Given your phobia, ring your dentist as soon as they are open again.

bostonkremekrazy · 02/04/2018 17:52

Thanks all.
The blood clot was out within the first few hours - i didnt know if that was ok or not but i rinsed as instructed after a drink.
I will call the special care unit first thing tomorrow.

That sounds like dry socket - have you followed all the aftercare instructions? I just had my wisdom tooth out on Saturday and I was advised of the following:

Rest for 24 hours.
No food/drink for several hours.
Only eat soft food for 24-48 hours, and no hot/fizzy drinks.
No drinking through a straw.
No rinsing/mouthwash for 24 hours, and even then only very gently, several times a day after food.
Don't eat on the side of the extraction for 3-4 days.
Don't brush the extraction site for 3-4 days.
No alcohol/smoking for 3-4 days, preferably longer.

I'm just over 48 hours clear and starting to feel a bit more human now! I sympathise though, it's horrible and you feel utterly miserable!

bostonkremekrazy · 02/04/2018 18:50

I wasn't given all of those instructions Shock

no smoking - if you do wait for 3 days - i don't anyway
rinse with salted water if needed after any food/drink - what does if needed mean? so i've been rinsing to keep it clean
no hot drinks until you the numbness wears off....so i waited until i could feel all of my face
if pain increases after 48 hours contact the clinic... - i should have called them friday, but it was good friday and closed now till tuesday .

i'm beginning to suspect i dislodged the blood clot far too early didn't I.
crapolo....

I had dry socket a few years ago and hands down it was the worst pain I've ever felt. My clot dislodged too quickly like yours. Mine was horrific for about 5 days - literally didn't sleep then one day it just stopped. I did go back to the dentist a few times to get it packed but they made me feel like I was making a fuss (I ended up making a complaint and they're no longer my dentistalthough this is partly cos after this they admitted the tooth didn't actually need taking out)

Getting it packed is worth it and not invasive at all if you think you can cope with it- just packing the hole with something that smells like cloves.

Waterlemon · 02/04/2018 19:00

Did you get given antibiotics? I had two teeth out and a was given a course of antibiotics. Although it was a failed (so infected) root canal I had removed, so a bit more to it than a regular extraction.

bostonkremekrazy · 02/04/2018 19:56

No antibiotics given. to be fair no signs of infection at all....
Will call tomorrow....

You were all right.
Hospital saw me earlier - dry socket. Packed with cotton & cloves and feeling much better.

Ouch - dry socket is horrible. I was so paranoid about getting it!

Hopefully you'll be on the mend now :) Flowers
