Totally prepared to be told IABU as can’t decide myself. A bit of detail so as to not drip feed...

I needed to to replace our dining table on a tight budget. I was looking around for a cheap second hand pine one but spotted one from a “well known high street retailer” that matched my dining chairs perfectly and was on offer for £65, so I booked it and collected it last Monday.

The table surface is either Melamine or laminate, I’m not too sure. Since setting it up we’ve only eaten at it using place mats, and ds has done a painting activity with a polythene liner down.

The instructions say to clean only with a soapy cloth and wipe down with a soft cloth, I have done this and dried with soft kitchen roll.

Today I noticed the surface has become covered in various scratches that are all visible at different angles, there are several patches all over the table including a circular scratch which has most likely come from me wiping it with kitchen roll by it’s shape.

I know it seems petty but I’m really annoyed that it is visibly damaged from only a week’s light use, surely it should be made to cope with being in use without getting substantially damaged from a bit of kitchen roll?

WIBU to try to return it as this is clearly not capable of withstanding daily use or AIBU as the damage was caused by us?

Tin hat duly donned...

I would definitely try to return it, yanbu at all. The worst that can happen is they say no, but it shouldn't be damaged like that after a week of light use, ours is just cheap from Ikea and has a few scratches but is about 12 years old!

Is it black? YANBU but definitely don't replace it with another black one they show every mark like a black car!

Thinking a bout it logically.... how could the damage occur through a fault?

Maybe there was a piece of grit or something, lodged under your cloth/kitchen roll?

WishingOnABar · 01/04/2018 21:08

RunMummyRun68 perhaps but the circular scratch only appeared this evening and there are also scratches in other places I didn’t wipe as only two of us are using it, I was looking at it from the angle that it has become damaged with gentle easily and is therefore not fit for purpose iyswim?
