To think the Speakmans are amazing!

That couple who wave their magic wand & cure people of fears & phobias in a matter of hours. Last night on Saturday night live there was a woman who was terrified of flying, she was crying & shaking stood by the aeroplane. They took her away from an hour, she then came back & virtually jumped on the aeroplane & loved it.

I'd love a session with them but at £3500 (I googled) for the day I can't afford!

How do they do it?

Are some of you saying the people who go on their shows are pretending to have a phobia & it's all fake? I must be very gullible . I've always thought they looked like brother & sister.

There are professional therapists on the internet that say that they are ineffective and their methods are not good.

They may not have phobias. A phobia is more than being scared of something like snakes or mice. I think lots of the people they do quick fixes on maybe don't have a phobia but have a fear of something. Its going to be quicker at sorting a fear from a phobia.

UncleNugget · 01/04/2018 10:48

It's usually just basic NLP or basic challenging/proving there is little evidence to the fear and it isn't complicated.

And lots of 'phobias' are flimsy in their basis and easily solved. Not all or probably even a majority but many are and many people haven't seen a MH professional or even a poorly 'qualified' counsellor.

Many people with 'phobias' just aren't used to anyone challenging it; because they haven't sought out decent help. That's not to say many, many people have and it hasn't helped.

I 'cured' agorophobia in one meeting with someone who hadn't left the house in 4 years - not even to go to the birth of his youngest child. What did I do? I said - please put your shoes on, we're going for a walk and when he said I can't, I said put your shoes on please, we're going for a walk, it'll be fine I promise.

So we did and it was fine and the next week he was independently picking his kids up from school. He came from a culture where the man had the ultimate say in everything and was never questioned or challenged. I challenged it, proved it was fine and so it was. I was viewed as some sort of God by his family when it was as simple as challenging the idea when no-one else had.

Another time I engaged in several sessions of CBT with someone who wouldn't leave the house because they thought they'd be murdered. After lots of well thought out sessions about his base fears and why he specifically feared murder (related to early trauma) I was a bit frustrated by the lack of progress by the end and said 'you're far more likely to be run over on the way to the shops you know'. That's true he said..started going off to the shops with no problems.

Sometimes all it takes is for someone with a 'professional reputation' and/or someone that the person trusts to 'unlock' an irrational fear or a pattern of behaviour that the person and their nearest and dearest have helped to entrench.

I'm very surprised at ITV This Morning having them on and endorsing them. They have no accreditations, no expertise, no qualifications

They are reluctant to talk about their qualifications... yeah right, I wonder why...
Apparently they only use stuff they've used on themselves. People who go on This Morning are under a huge amount of pressure to show a result and they don't want to look stupid so whilst there, yeah they can do it.

TidyDancer · 01/04/2018 10:54

The Speakmans are creepy charlatans. Can't bloody stand the pair.

Grandadwasthatyou · 01/04/2018 10:59

Couldn't agree more with Tidydancer.

I said exactly that to my dh when they were on last night. Where have they come from and how are they so popular on tv? They make me cringe. Apparently the lady afraid of flying was cured after a 45 minute session with them and 3 cups of tea!

A case of the emperor's new clothes methinks.

DumbleDee · 01/04/2018 11:00

@UncleNugget yep well said. Seen it for myself close up that it works.

Seen a moth phobia cured after a 15 minute session and I know the phobia was real as it was my DB

Seen 2 people at work gave their fear of flying phobia cured - both flew on holiday.

Multiple others

Interesting. I still don't get how that woman got on the aeroplane after she was obviously so terrified. They're booked up for all 2018 & at £3500 a session! I'm going to Google further.

"There are professional therapists on the internet that say that they are ineffective and their methods are not good."

And there are qualified Doctors that still believe that Autism is caught, vaccinations are a waste of time and you can cure many ailments with coloured water. Opinions differ between Professionals.

I went through a period of anxiety and phobia. I was "trained" in NLP and CBT. I used the methods and they worked.

I agree that the test would need to be a person with a true diagnosed phobia being quickly helped. However there are people paying for private health care, that might not work. They don't claim to and should have to get 100% success rate.

Chris Steele used to work alongside them on This Morning and if it is all a hoax, i doubt he would agree to be in on it. It must be a very clever hoax.

Birdsgottafly · 01/04/2018 11:24

Re the looking like each other, i think they've had work done by the same person, including teeth. You see lots of Clebs, using the same Cosmetic people, looking similar.

Why is it ok for someone to pay a high price for cosmetic dentistry, but not their MH?

dancingthroughthedark · 01/04/2018 11:25

Uncle Nugget I have had agoraphobia for many years and lots of counselling ,CBT, exposure therapy etc. Nothing has' cured' me. Saying you can cure someone in just a few sentences makes people think I put it on, I can't leave my safe space. It's like the celebrities you see on tv talking about their 'panic attacks'. If they really had them they wouldn't be on tv in the first place.

Gilead · 01/04/2018 11:29

Charlatans and quacks!

UncleNugget · 01/04/2018 16:44

dancing- or you could read what I said.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 01/04/2018 16:46

Is it drugs?

Tortycat · 01/04/2018 16:50

Complaints to itv against them for false advertising have been upheld so no idea why they are on again. Complete charlatans! And why you would charge 3k for a day - pure greed making money out of vulnerable people

Roscrea0707 · 01/04/2018 16:50

They are a seriously odd looking pair of charlatans. I'm amazed This morning give them airtime, they are an unqualified pair of quacks with terrible hairstyles. Can't stand them.

Trumpdump · 01/04/2018 16:53

I swear this is the 5th thread in a fortnight on these two... Hmm

JeSaisPas · 01/04/2018 16:56

UncleNugget I agree wholeheartedly your post; many people who say they will never be cured have never actually sought professional help or have only tried a type of therapy that is ineffective for treating their problem.

In fact, someone started a critical thread about the Speakmans last week right after their appearance on This Morning where they helped a woman get over her agoraphobia. The woman actually said something like "I've been suffering with this for 20 years so therapy is my last resort". It beggars belief that she never sought help before!

I don't know why people refuse to believe their methods work when seeing it with their own eyes. Yes, there is no evidence that the people are still cured of their phobias 20 years later but do any of you have any evidence that proves they aren't? Why be so negative about something that apparently works just because you don't understand why?

HangingRock · 01/04/2018 16:57

Maybe Valium in her tea

MickHucknallspinkpancakes · 01/04/2018 17:18

Do they always have tea @HangingRock ? GrinGrinGrin

You may have a good point there!

HangingRock · 01/04/2018 18:04

Someone said the girl had three cups of tea (unless i imagined it.) They probably wouldn't get away with drugging people though Grin

NameChanger22 · 01/04/2018 21:12

I have a terrible phobia of the Speakmans. Whenever they're on the tele I have to hide behind a chair. What should I do?

user1472333009 · 01/04/2018 22:35

@namechanger22Grin I've gone off them a bit now.
