To put it in his drink?

Maybe should be in parenting but wanted traffic sorry!!

My DS (14 months) has had the most awful cough and cold the last week or so, he's been really poorly with it. I've got a liquid vitamin supplement thing for him but he won't take it from a spoon or syringe etc - it doesn't really give any specific instructions on the bottle for administration so WIBU to mix it in his water in his beaker? It's got a natural orange flavour so should taste nice! Just want him to feel better bless him hoping it'll help!

I have an orange multi vitamin liquid supplement for my son. I asked in Holland and Barrett if it was ok to dilute it and they said yes.

ANother27 · 01/04/2018 08:56

@PaleBlue yes that's the one I've got I think! Brilliant I'll do that then Grin thank you!

Yes I used to. And with Calpol, to make strawberry milk when he refused

ANother27 · 01/04/2018 09:11

@helpconfused luckily he takes calpol ok but I just kinda thought all it's doing is masking his symptoms. Not potentially helping him recover! Tbh I have no idea if the vitamins will just thought it was worth a try as they have vitamin c in them lol

Sorry, I wasn't suggesting to give him calpol. I just meant that I used to put it in a drink when he wouldn't have it. Wink
My DS used to have Abidec, which is such a strong vile taste that I couldn't get it in at all. Dr suggested at 2.5 years to give him the jelly vit sweets

ANother27 · 01/04/2018 21:40

Ha no worries. A friend of mine with older children gives them the chewable ones that looks like sweets so they'll prob come in handy when my DS is old enough haha. He seems better today even after only one day of having it so all is not lost I think!!!

That's is great that he seems better. Hopefully he is recovering now. My ds used to get chest infections when he was little. After I started giving him the Orange liquid multi vitamin he didn't have any best infections and hardly any colds he was very healthy. Then last year when he was 8 I stopped giving him it because I wanted to try him on an iron supplement and didn't know if he could have both. He got a really bad chest infection and was very ill last winter. I don't know if it was a coincidence or not but I make sure he always takes it now. He has had no chest infections or bad colds since back on it. I take it too.

Tbh I probably wouldn't bother unless he drains the whole beaker. Liquid supplements are normally tiny in dosage so imagine that 1ml or whatever diluted in a whole beaker of water...they'll probably only end up having a fraction of the full dose.

What I would try and do is teach him that syringes contain yummy things - so for a few days give him a syringe of slightly stronger squash or juice or milkshake (whatever he likes basically).

Then when he's happily having a 5ml mouthful of squash or milkshake from a syringe you can add the vitamin (or vitamin first and top up with squash). Then you know he's having the full dose rather than it floating around in a beaker full.

SecretBum · 02/04/2018 10:34

And yy to Abidec tasting vile! Just the smell is enough to make me retch. Ds3 (10m) doesn't particularly like it but thankfully grudgingly accepts it without much fuss.

InterstellarSleepingElla · 02/04/2018 10:44

I give dd2 her multivitamin (vitababy) in her milk at night. I tried it from a syringe and spoon but she just vomited straight after it both times so in milk it goes.

ANother27 · 02/04/2018 10:51

Thank you for your replies. My DS is a big drinker and will happily guzzle 3-4 beakers of water or very diluted sugar free squash an hour! He doesn't have milk any more - was so odd, he got to exactly one year (to the week) and refused to drink any milk from then on!! I make sure I give him bits like cheese and yoghurt to make up for it and he has cows milk on his cereal but otherwise no milk to sneak anything into! Lol!

Defo seems to have helped, unless it's just the cold running its course and doing one, but he's just got a bit of a runny nose now and is up and about playing so will continue!!!

Do you literally give it all the time eg everyday or is it supposed to be just if they are poorly??

Ds3 has had Abidec every day since (can't remember...tiny).

My older dc have daily vitamin tablets too aged 7 and 10 and always have.

holycityzoo · 02/04/2018 10:59

I mix things with yogurt too. I find it's easier to get it in them.

Paleblue · 02/04/2018 12:54

My dd has quite a restricted diet so I give it to him most days. I worry that maybe it is not good to give it all the time so I miss out a few days every week if he is fit and healthy. A healthy diet full of fruit and veg would be better but that is never going to happen with my ds.

BertrandRussell · 02/04/2018 12:56

Why not just give him an orange?

ANother27 · 02/04/2018 13:20

@BertrandRussell he does love fruit and every single food that there is but where he's not been well recently he's hardly eaten anything. Occasionally I've managed to get some banana baked beans and couple of rich tea biscuits in but otherwise he's not been interested in food
