To wonder when all this Easter Bunny nonsense started?

As a child I was given eggs by my family which I started on Easter Sunday. We give our children two eggs each and have an egg hunt and a few other chocolate treats. On FB now I see that the Easter Bunny has visited friend's houses and left masses of chocolate and presents. Is this the norm now? I would never have thought of buying Easter gifts.

Each to their own!

I did egg hunts when I was a child, and I do them for my kids- although minus the Easter bunny.

Father Christmas brings all presents but they aren't all from him- they are labelled from the gifter so in effect F.C is the delivery guy.

purplemunkey · 01/04/2018 09:10

Agree with the other posters saying who cares? Don't like it, don't do it. It's not new. We had an egg hunt and eggs from family when I was a kid but I knew some friends from school got presents too. I'm 37. Now I have a toddler I'm enjoying putting together an egg hunt as I have fond memories of them.

My DC have got a few presents from family as well, but to be honest it's quite nice to have something other than just stacks of chocolate!

Live and let live in this situation is think.

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 01/04/2018 09:11

The Easter Bunny is a load of tosh and DOES NOT EXIST!
No bloody way! No one ever told me that! Shock

Kids don't stay kids very long, all the main presents and stocking come Father Christmas here, they might get a book or a jumper from us, their parents. Family presents (grand-parents and so on) are from the grand-parents, so kids know how to say thank you and they are not confused when you give gifts to their cousins.
There's no rule, do what you like.

Kids believe in magic for a few years, so what. As long as mine are happy, I am happy.

fleshmarketclose · 01/04/2018 09:12

Mine get an egg, df used to buy them an outfit and youngest dd used to get a cuddly bunny/chick/lamb because she doesn't really like chocolate but have never made a big thing and there was no Easter bunny here.
Dc are adults mostly now but I still buy them an egg to give them when they come for lunch later.

Stephisaur · 01/04/2018 09:12

My parents always just bought me eggs, and since I was a teenager I’ve bought eggs/flowers for my family (siblings, parents, grandparents)

I think the Easter bunny is a cute notion, but not as an Easter equivalent of Father Christmas.

That said, I still plan to dominate the Easter egg hunt at my Mum’s house later, my nieces don’t stand a chance 😂

Aworldofmyown · 01/04/2018 09:12

The easter bunny left us eggs to hunt when I was a child - i'm 40 so it can't be that new!!

We do suggest that relatives might like to get a teeny gift instead of chocolate, usually a book or something crafty! Its up to them though.

LinoleumBlownapart · 01/04/2018 09:13

I always had eggs from the easter bunny, I'm 42. My kids get an easter egg each and a hunt of mini eggs or something similar, their grandparents and other people often give them too but that's usually in the run up to easter. No toys or gifts, although I noticed a lot of easter eggs now come with toys.

AhoyDelBoy · 01/04/2018 09:14

I grew up with the Easter Bunny in NZ in the 80's and 90's. That was and is the 'norm' in NZ. However, these Easter baskets that Instagram tells me people go mad on now (an American thing?) are completely OTT if you ask me.

blinkineckmum · 01/04/2018 09:14

More than 35 years as it preceeded me! We give our kids nothing, just hide some of the choc given by relatives in the garden to share with friends. The rest stays in a cupboard for special treats or for me. They are only 2 and though.

GnotherGnu · 01/04/2018 09:14

When I was a child we had one egg from our parents. My children tended to get one egg from us but also got them from various relatives, and we did an egg hunt. We were very clear that they came from people who should be thanked. They enjoyed Easter quite as much as children who thought a bunny had delivered the eggs.

What I've seen in the shops as suggested Easter presents for children seems to be mostly plastic tat. I really can't see any point in buying it.

Slartybartfast · 01/04/2018 09:16

my ds was a toddler, a friend from ante/post natal group said she was buying things for Easter for her dc. So I followed suit. so about more than 20 years ago

DunkinDoughnuts · 01/04/2018 09:17

My kid gets and will get nothing at Easter. Load of tosh if I'm honest.

I'm not even sure il lead him to believe in the tooth fairy.

I never believed in the Easter bunny, yes we for Easter eggs but it was a "it's Easter, here's an egg", I've never participated in an egg hunt

PlumsGalore · 01/04/2018 09:18

Presents to the value of £25 each? That is ridiculous. Eggs fine, an Easter egg Hunt sounds like fun but presents? Why?

DunkinDoughnuts · 01/04/2018 09:18

Got*

ShortandAnnoying · 01/04/2018 09:18

The Easter bunny has been around for a long time and egg hunts were a big thing when I was younger, but it has only recently become something like a kind of Santa that kids really believe in. Before that it was a story-book character like a fairy or mermaids.

EasterBunBun · 01/04/2018 09:19

Easter tree ?? What, how, why ?

I used to do an Easter treasure hunt for my DCs of mini eggs - either straight forward finding them or, later, a treasure hunt going from clue to clue. Kept them occupied for ages. Also used to buy some little decorations - meant for cakes, I presume- like fluffy chicks, plus scraps of ribbons etc and do some Easter bonnet decorations ( actually elderly sun hats kept in the dressing up box) Grandma then bought a big egg i.e. not huge, just not mini for each child.
I have memories of the excitement of a foil covered egg as a child, making it last as long as I could over a few days.

Nelly1727 · 01/04/2018 09:20

I am 39 and the Easter bunny always visited when I was a child. My boys get one egg from the Easter bunny and tend to get one from Aunt and Uncle. We do an egg hunt with their cousins every year. The eggs normally last a good 6 months though and they only have a max of 3 plus some small hollow eggs from the hunt.

ssd · 01/04/2018 09:20

it's not the Easter bunnies fault, its facebook, it's a mecca for show offs and shite

GreenSeededGrape · 01/04/2018 09:21

As pp I'm 40 and the Easter Bunny left eggs. I'm pretty sure the UK isn't living in it's own bubble Confused

Maybe your parents didn't have the money for eggs. Watching UK tv in the 80s and 90s it always looked so grim here.

Lilyhatesjaz · 01/04/2018 09:21

I used to get loads of eggs from various family as a 70s child but my ds has a nut allergy so it was hard to get eggs he was sometimes given eggs he couldn't eat so I would give him a small toy Instead and hide a few small eggs if I could get any suitable but also from us no bunny.
We also used to take the children to a national trust Easter egg hunt as it was a good fun even if ds couldn't eat the egg.

HuskyMcClusky · 01/04/2018 09:22

it's not the Easter bunnies fault, its facebook, it's a mecca for show offs and shite

Good summary! 😂

MollyDaydream · 01/04/2018 09:23

Easter bunny hid eggs in our garden in the 80s!

Mummyoflittledragon · 01/04/2018 09:24

Dd gets a couple of medium eggs from us, another from the Easter bunny and a couple of mini 20g figures. She will also probably get something from grandma but not delivered by the bunny. She also had a small egg from her sports coach and child minder.

What’s wrong with this? I don’t see why something like this amount is extravagant or too commercial.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 01/04/2018 09:25

EasterBunBun - they are all over the garden centres in my neck of the woods, decorated with coloured eggs and fluffy chicks, etc. Very pretty but I can't see the point of having more tat to store in the loft 360 days of the year!

Pigeonpost · 01/04/2018 09:25

Yup, I've logged onto FB this morning and seen piles and piles of chocolate eggs, actually makes me feel a bit sick. Mine have done a very small egg hunt in the garden (have greedy dogs so had to be quick!) and got a Lego minifigure each as they aren't that keen on chocolate anyway. People seem to see "the Easter Bunny" as a second Father Christmas, it's grim.
