To worry about baby vomiting?

Cirrys · 31/03/2018 15:31

DD (2 months old) vomits small amounts regularly like most babies. But a couple of times a week she does a HUGE vomit while breastfeeding. She literally empties her stomach all over my breast, my clothes, the chair and herself. It's about a cupful of liquid. She still seems hungry and wants to be fed again afterwards.

Is this normal? Any idea what causes it or how I can prevent it?

Wind?

LampHat · 31/03/2018 15:42

Watching with interest as my 3 month old is exactly the same! Although he now has a cough so we’re getting projectile vomit at least once every day Sad We’re both running out of clothes!

I try and give him smaller feeds which seems to help a bit, and handle him like a hand grenade for about 30 mins after each feed. No sudden moves!

Am hoping it will improve as he grows, as he’s still pretty tiny for his age.

Jassmells · 31/03/2018 15:44

Could be related to phlegm in the windpipe, I had this for ages with DD2 and eventually a doctor put her on montelukast which is an asthma treatment but worked wonders.

Two of mine have been happy pukers. Muslins everywhere are the answer.

Jassmells · 31/03/2018 15:45

But at 2 months could be anything babies sonlike to throw up all
Over you! ... just keep an eye on it

Could be the start of reflux? My DD’s started similar to this and hers was awful. She still gets it at times

ToriRay · 31/03/2018 15:48

Any pattern? Is it after you've eaten anything in particular? I had this after a massive plate of green veg on a roast! Just upset my baby's stomach. She was ok the older she got though.

Calvinlookingforhobbs · 31/03/2018 15:50

Is your little one clicking when feeding? Could he/she be taking in wind? Have tongue and lip ties been ruled out? The can massively impact on latch and result in wind and therefore vomiting.

childmindingmumof3 · 31/03/2018 15:56

You eating vegetables can't upset a breastfed baby's stomach, milk isn't made directly from food.

Some babies just have an immature valve at the top of their stomach and sometimes milk comes back up, especially if they swallow lots of air. So long as there's no pain don't worry about it.

CoolGirlsNeverGetAngry · 31/03/2018 15:59

Been there! Mine did this a few times, almost as though the milk was too much for her tummy as it was after long feeds. Sadly never really got an answer but she grew out of it after about three months.

ToriRay · 31/03/2018 16:00

Small amounts of what you eat or drink can be passed through to your baby (NHS website for starters). Other advice states staying away from 'gassy' vegetables, as they can upset baby's tummy. That's my experience.
The breastfeeding helpline can help with more specific advice OP.

I have a vivid memory of a bottle-shaped projectile of vomit sailing across the room after a feed and hitting the opposite wall. Doctor said it would improve once DC was walking. Strangely, I didn't find that of much comfort.

childmindingmumof3 · 31/03/2018 16:04

The stuff that gets into milk is from your bloodstream. Gassy vegetables give you wind when they break down in your digestive system.

Teachtolive · 31/03/2018 16:26

I've had 2 babies that were well versed in the art of the exorcist vom. Both of them struggled with wind. It can help to burp them more frequently. Both of mine grew out of it.

ToriRay · 31/03/2018 16:28

@childmindingmumof3 contrary to HV advice but I'll agree to disagree! Smile

Tobebythesea · 31/03/2018 16:28

It could be Cows milk protein allergy.

childmindingmumof3 · 31/03/2018 16:30

HV's give all kinds of odd advice, gassy vegetables or fizzy drinks getting into your milk is an old wive's tale.

TheCraicDealer · 31/03/2018 16:31

DNeice was like this, she's pretty much grown out of it at 6mo. DSis was also told about the immature valve, so started feeding her slightly less but more often and that seemed to help.

Caterina99 · 31/03/2018 20:37

I probably wouldn’t worry too much if it was only twice a week. Babies do that kind of thing unfortunately. DD did it if she ate too much or got jostled too much after a feed or wasn’t winded enough or who knows what the reason!

If it’s becoming more frequent, like every day, then I’d speak to your GP or HV as you can get medication for reflux

Allthewaves · 31/03/2018 20:42

Mine used to do it if my let down was too quick they would splutter, gulp air and then later massive projectile.

tallulahwullah · 31/03/2018 20:42

My DD used to do this the Health Visitor & GP didn't care as she was still managing to put on weight feeding constantly it was reflux she grew out of it. I used to wear grey all the time & stunk of baby sick as I also ran out of clothesConfused oh the glamour of being a mum - good luck!

User24689 · 31/03/2018 20:48

Got a 5 month old that still does this and always has. Nothing wrong with him but it's a pain in the arse and I'm dreading solids!

LotsToThinkOf · 31/03/2018 20:52

My Dc were both sicky babies but DS2 caught a cold at about 2 months and I've never experienced puke like it. He didn't seem particularly snotty but the phlegm he was swallowing was being brought up with every feed. Could it be something like that?

Some babies are just sicky. If everything else is ok I wouldn't worry too much, if things change or get worse then look into it a bit more with the GP.

My DC were both formula fed, not sure if that makes a difference.
