Disabled people need to be better looked after on trains

I feel they need to be better looked after, maybe given first class seats for free, when the trains are packed and non- disable pigs refuse to get up from the disabled seating.

Did anyone see this upsetting story about a blind man who got on a train to Waterloo with his guide dog. Not one commuter got up to let him sit down in a disabled seat and watched this poor bugger in tears as well as his guide dog sliding around on the wet floor.

I think it’s an absolute disgrace that not one person on that train had an ounce of humanity. I know I hate standing up and struggling to balance myself on the train. Imagine what it is for someone blind. This man’s career before going blind was working in emergency as a doctor looking after others!

I wish I had been on that train, I would have spoke up and shamed the lot of them! Grrr!

I don’t think first class is needed but they should have better facilities.

I have had to stand outside a toilet with ds on a train because they had no wheexhair spaces on that train and then next wouldn’t either. Not that they had none free but no spaces at all.

PremierNaps · 30/03/2018 16:59

That's absolutely disgraceful! Trains seem to be a dog eat dog world. They should all be ashamed of themselves.

UpOnDown · 30/03/2018 17:03

The newest GWR trains have wheelchair spaces in first class only - it's so nice not to get hit around the head or blocked in by luggage as happens in the normal shared spaces.

WellAlwaysHaveParis · 30/03/2018 17:03

I heard about that- it’s so awful. I definitely think something needs to be done about it. I wonder if the government should get involved to do something effective about it?

candygs · 30/03/2018 17:04

What PremierNaps says a thousand times

Springnowplease · 30/03/2018 17:05

They should have managers on all trains to make people move. It's not rocket science.

Purplelife · 30/03/2018 17:06

Sirzy, is that common of all trains or just some? It’s just not good enough is it? I wish they could section off a part of a carriage, just for disabled people only ( put in wheel chair area) and anyone non- disabled using that section is fined, just like in first class.

I am just so shocked no one offered a seat. I can genuinely say that I would have if I’d have been there. I used to be shy about offering up my seat because everyone stares as soon as you speak, but now I’m older and don’t care Grin

And the woman spoken about in the article who told him he should apologise for being blind ShockAngry what a grade A cunt.

Purplelife · 30/03/2018 17:08

I’m going to write to my local MP about this. You’re right Spring, they need a constant presence on the trains to force people to do the right thing :(

Don't bite, someone clearly wants attention. Hmm

Mogleflop · 30/03/2018 17:12

Overcrowded trains should be banned though. It's obscene that they're allowed to run routinely packed.

UpOnDown · 30/03/2018 17:12

It's not as simple as a manager telling people to move themselves/their luggage - a lot of the time they refuse, or wont acknowledge it's their luggage in the wheelchair space.

Purplelife · 30/03/2018 17:12

Aurora,Yeah, unbelievable the amount of crap he has to put up with for being blind! I was surprised that happens, really sad.

There's always one isn't there?

LadyPenelopeCantDance · 30/03/2018 17:14

I commute in to London daily and always give up my seat if I see someone who needs it. However, it is completely unrealistic to block off part of a carriage just for disabled people. The trains are packed as it is without taking up extra space that may or may not be used on every journey. They should scrap first class on commuter lines too.

Sirzy · 30/03/2018 17:15

purple I tend to avoid public transport with ds as much as possible tbh because it can be a nightmare. It was train company we used when we went to London which had no wheelchair spaces which amazed me, apparently their newer ones do but they didn’t know when the next one would come Hmm

Merseyrail trains I have never had an issue with though (other than people who refuse to move prams out of the space but that’s a different issue)

Mogleflop · 30/03/2018 17:16

Yeah, ignore it. Trolls will always troll and some people get off on being shouted at online.

I agree that long endlessly empty carriages for first class are disgusting, especially at these times.

I'm going to bite

Unless you've paid for first class, you've paid for the journey, not the seat.

I commute into London. My journey is 40 minutes on the fast train and often I end up standing or sitting on the floor.

If I had been there, I would have offered my seat.

Its not even about the train operators, it's about people having some fricking decency and empathy!

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 30/03/2018 17:17

This story absolutely disgusted me. And I’m sure most others. I don’t use trains so maybe this just isn’t sensible at all but perhaps trains could be fitted out better to allow more seats rather than standing space and also not sell tickets once the seats are full so no-one should actually need to stand. Also aside from all that I think all seats should be priority seats for disabled people. So if someone disabled needs a seat you have to give it.

NewYearNewMe18 · 30/03/2018 17:19

I wish they could section off a part of a carriage, just for disabled people only ( put in wheel chair area) and anyone non- disabled using that section is fined, just like in first class.

There are priority areas on trains. There are actually very few seats on commuter trains within London these days, they've all been taken out and 'bum perch' things installed, which is marvellous if you are very short, but tall people haven't a hope in hell of perching against them.

This is disgraceful And the pic of Kika clearly in distress. Sad

People are so fucking selfish.

HelenaDove · 30/03/2018 17:22

Decency and empathy are in short supply Some of the recent threads on here are a good example of it.
