question about fencing - not sure if this is right?

We have some builders in right now putting a small 3.5 ft fence up in the garden to cordon off an area for the dog. The ground isn't level, so one portion of the fence sits on a higher part of the ground. The men have kept the fence the same height for the entire length, meaning this portion of fencing is taller than the rest.

Is this standard? Are fences measured from the ground height regardless if the ground isn't level? Should I ask for them to cut the fence shorter or something?

There is more than one way to deal with a fence on sloping ground.
Hint: When dealing with a builder, never assume ANYTHING.

Would you be happy with that?

DH doesn't mind but I'm slightly twitchy.

The alternative would be to have one part of the fence lower than the other. Wouldn't that look odd?

BrazzleDazzleDay · 30/03/2018 13:23

Does look a bit odd, would annoy me

CuriousaboutSamphire · 30/03/2018 13:24

Ooh! I didn't even think of that when we had our fence put in. Happily our builders made it the same height, at the top, all the way along Smile

Heratnumber7 · 30/03/2018 13:24

I would have asked for the top to be all the same height. What did you specify?

Is it because the panelling or fencing you've used is pre cut or made to a standard size?

I'm going to be staring at it for the next 10+ years. Bleh

I'd have to at least round off that jutty corner, or get some of those fence-hung troughs full of flowers to disguise the discrepancy.

Blit · 30/03/2018 13:34

I'd get my jigsaw out and slant the corner off, drawing the shape on it first, or just cut the top off all the way along. If the builders are still there ask them to do it.

CrochetBelle · 30/03/2018 13:35

Once they are done, they will probably fix the discrepancy, usually angling it so the increase of height is more gradual.

dotdotdotmustdash · 30/03/2018 13:37

Surely if it's to contain or exclude dogs then the builders must be trying to do you a favour by keeping the height the same? If I wanted a 5ft fence to contain my dogs, it would have to be 5ft from ground level all the way round, regardless of variation in ground levels.

athingthateveryoneneeds · 30/03/2018 14:02

They've gone but it looks the same. I am going to get a planter and put strawberries in it.

I think it would depend on what you told them you wanted really. If you said you wanted a 5ft fence all around this part to keep a dog in then I would think this means you need the fence to be 5ft tall at all parts, to stop the dog jumping over.

I would either slant the corner or just get some type of pot along the top of the higher but I think.

Mrsramsayscat · 31/03/2018 11:06

I prefer it like that than sloping. I sloped a fence in line with the road it was on at one time ,so that it remained 3ft highly all the way along. It looked ridiculous and I should have levelled it.
