I am not sporty or interested in sport so dont know the rules and regulations.

Did the guy tamper with the ball? And if he did then how do you tamper with a ball?

OP posts:
FuckingMerlot · 29/03/2018 21:20

halfwit how is this a non-story??? It's actually pretty sensational

GrouchyKiwi · 29/03/2018 21:46

As a Kiwi I really enjoy the Triple J song about it.

MissEliza · 29/03/2018 22:14

It's disgusting isn't it and the crocodile tears at the press conference was cringeworthy. There is so much cheating in sport these days, it's depressing and really indicative of the values of society today.
Ds's sports team recently lost out on a trophy and the team who beat them fielded players who were ineligible because they play at a higher level. This is the second year it happened and nobody challenges it. What lessons do young people get from this?

echt · 30/03/2018 04:41

This has nothing to do with the ball tampering, but entirely nails the whole Aussie sports apology:

MaitlandGirl · 30/03/2018 04:51

One of the worst things is the tweet from our opposition leader about it all.

No one's perfect. A terrible lapse in judgement but good people make mistakes. Credit to Steve Smith for fronting up. Now let’s give him some time and space.

It wasn’t a terrible lapse in judgement - it was planned cheating by people who know better. Bloody disgusting behaviour.

CommanderDaisy · 30/03/2018 04:51

As a aside - "bush pig" isn't a racist comment in Australia, it's a misogynistic one - used to describe a fat , ugly , rural (white) woman.
Still a shitty thing to say, but no racist intent in the general vernacular.

Gennz18 · 30/03/2018 05:11

I don't think it was crocodile tears from Smtih, I think he is genuinely distraught.

I am a Kiwi and a cricket fan so no love for the baggy green!

The sanctions handed down by Cricket Australia are pretty severe. Under the rules of the game ball tampering is a reasonably minor event - it's the premeditation and collusion which has made it so serious.

Littlecaf · 30/03/2018 05:20

It’s definite not a non story. How much money gets spent on players, tickets, cricket team staif, sponsorship & betting for results to be gained by cheating? ££££

They should be banned for life.

A bowler can legitimately shine a ball to make it swing a bit - which is why you see bowlers with a red mark next to their crotch, but they cannot pick or rough up with any substance.

Littlecaf · 30/03/2018 05:21

Erm, ‘bush pig’ is usually aimed at aboriginal decendants and is derogatory and therefore racist.

itsstillhotinperth · 30/03/2018 05:26

Why are the Australian media and public more bothered about some blokes roughing up a cricket ball when we've got NRL players doing this:

www.msn.com/en-au/sport/rugby-league/comment-if-you-think-ball-tampering-is-our-national-sporting-shame-you-havent-met-matt-lodge/ar-AAvezYo?li=AAgfLCP

CommanderDaisy · 30/03/2018 05:35

bushpig
Australian origin.
Derogatory label applied to a particularly unattractive woman. Typically used to describe a woman from a rural area who has an unattractive face, a mullet hairstyle, is of stocky build and dresses in flannelette clothing. Is not necessarily associated with homosexuality.

mateysmum · 30/03/2018 06:20

The thing that makes this scandal particularly bad is that this was not a momentary decision by a junior team member desperate to win a game who spontaneously tampered with the ball. No, this was premeditated and planned action by the most senior members of the team to cheat in a game renowned for its fairplay.
This was effectively a conspiracy of cheating by enormously wealthy sportsmen revered by a nation, who demonstrated the totally wrong kind of leadership and must have set totally the wrong culture in the dressing room.
In my opinion, they should be banned from playing for Australia for life. They knew what they were doing, I have no sympathy. They need to be made an example of.

greendale17 · 30/03/2018 06:53

Oh, and the coach thinks Asians are "fucking black cunts", which explains the culture they've developed under his tutelage.

^That is truly disgusting

JacquesHammer · 30/03/2018 07:46

I think Smith is only distraught he’s been caught.

OP - it’s prrfectly within the rules to smooth one side of the ball, hence why you see cricketers rubbing the cricket ball on their trousers. You aren’t however allowed to artificially rough up the other side.

I don’t believe it was a lapse in judgement at all. It was totally premeditated knowing they wouldn’t have to face the same ball.

gooseygoosegoose · 30/03/2018 07:59

Bush pig is like calling someone a chav. It's not a racist comment.

falsepriest · 30/03/2018 08:06

Am quite amused by the constant referring to Cameron Bancroft as “junior” like he’s a naïve teenager. He’s a 25 year-old man with 120 professional matches under his belt.

agender · 30/03/2018 08:17

he's relatively junior, no mega-million dollar paydays, and only 9 international matches - could easily feel pressured to join in a cheating scheme. The captain obviously has no such excuse.

Steamcloud · 30/03/2018 08:19

Agree with JacquesHammer.

For Smith to say "and I now understand the consequences of my actions" is utterly ludicrous. As if he didn't at the time! As if the captain of a national cricket team doesnt already know it is wrong to cover up evidence of tampering and lie to officials. Or did he mean "consequences" in terms of money lost in sponsorship and advertising deals?

Great role models for the youth of today.

GreenSeededGrape · 30/03/2018 08:29

DH has a friend whose BIL plays professionally and he said it goes on all the time with every team it's just this one was so ridiculously obvious.

I'm annoyed they bought disgrace to the game and Australia but they'll get their flogging in the media and while they're banned for a year it will be a hard come back, if at all.

Clandestino · 30/03/2018 18:17

Just a question: why is it considered such a great fashion among the Australian coaches to make idiotic racist remarks? Ireland had a field day recently, reminding Eddie Jones that it was the "scummy Irish" who won the Grand Slam and the shit place Wales finished before England too.
It's stupid, immature, doesn't really scare or demotivate anyone and only backfires.

minionsrule · 30/03/2018 18:37

What i found depressing was the general comment of 'most people do it in one way or another'. They are probably right to some extent.
Most people are glad at the harsh sentances, and Lehmann subsequently resigining, because it is the vile, bullying culture than now runs through the aussie national team that makes them despised, they obv are not good enough to win fairly and squarely.
My DS plays cricket and these 'role models' are a disgrace.
Unfortunately cricket is no longer much of a gentlemans sport in any country these days Sad

Davros · 30/03/2018 18:41

Oh for for the days of Brett Lee, I loved him and I do NIT like the Aussie cricket team.

megletthesecond · 30/03/2018 18:45

They cheated and got caught. Bloody idiots and zero sympathy here.
