Easter Presents?

Backinthetallgrass · 29/03/2018 09:26

Aibu? I dropped my 5 year old off at school and there was loads of kids with gift bags, flowers and presents for the teachers today. Is that actually a thing people do these days? My older child is 9 years older and we never gave or saw Easter gifts being handed out.

I give the teacher a Christmas gift (grudgingly) and I do the end of school year 'thank you' gift (very happy to do this one). But now when I dropped my child off they were all dissapointed because they hadn't got the teacher an Easter gift :(

My ds has gone in today with no gift.

FlirtyRomanticToast · 29/03/2018 09:36

It's a "No" from me anyway.

WorraLiberty · 29/03/2018 09:38

It's always been about 50/50 at my kid's school. Some give a little gift and some don't.

It's not a new thing as my eldest is 26 now.

tigercub50 · 29/03/2018 09:39

Never done that. I have gone in with bunny ears on & a basket of choccie eggs but that would embarrass DD9 I think! The most I have given teachers & TA’s is a creme egg. I give small Christmas presents & an end of year gift

Idontdowindows · 29/03/2018 09:42

No gifts at Easter, no. Never done it, never will.

Snorkpod · 29/03/2018 09:46

No.

We give a small hand made gift at the end of the year as a thank you if we think the teacher warrented it (luckily they have so far). We've also taken in small leaving gifts when teachers have left mid year but that's it.

It wouldn't even occur to me to do an Easter gift. Then again, I don't get the who thing about Easter gifts anyway.

I know some people's thoughts on hand made teacher gifts but we do it because, even if they go straight in the bin, it shows more thought and effort than a box of Roses grabbed from the petrol station on the way in. We're only talking small things like a book mark my daughter sewed or a plant pot she made.

I finished at my school yesterday. I got an easter egg and various bottles of booze from students. My favourite was a card, signed by the whole of one of my classes, full of lovely messages. They'd also made a mask of my fave singer and came in doing a song by his group. All lovely and totally unexpected. As for Xmas, easter and end of year gifts...I expect nothing. I get paid to do my job and that's enough for me. Honestly, I hope parents don't feel pressure to give anything.

PurpleDaisies · 29/03/2018 09:56

I didn’t get Easter presents. I don’t really like getting presents full stop so I’d have been pleased!

curious86 · 29/03/2018 10:08

Never done that and I never will. I understand the thank you gift but I wouldn't do Xmas or easter

Marmite27 · 29/03/2018 10:10

I gave my child’s key worker and second an Easter egg, and sent a bag of individual mini eggs in for the rest of the staff in her room. She’ll probably have moved come Christmas and it was a nice way to say you’re appreciated and only cost a couple of quid.

I also sent in a big box of minis at Halloween too.

VeganCatLover · 29/03/2018 10:16

No, I don't give gifts to teachers at any time of year.

andyandapril · 01/04/2018 11:29

Same here. I don’t really even get why we need to give gifts at the best of times. Like Mother’s Day- how is spending money you often can’t afford on things they don’t need - how is that supposed to show someone how much you love them?

I got a bunch of daffodils, lovely but not expected.
The children all got a small present from their teachers/teaching assistants.

popcornaddict · 01/04/2018 12:49

I've never heard of this. I can understand end if year but I even struggle to understand xmas.
When does it all end?? Halloween, teachers birthday its a bit ridiculous. I know teachers do an amazing job but surely buying them presents every other month is too much.

Zoflorabore · 01/04/2018 12:51

Parents galore at dd's school at end of year and Christmas but I've never seen anyone bring Easter presents and I've been right through the same school with ds who's now 15.

That is bordering on ridiculous.

Where does it stop?

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 01/04/2018 12:53

That’s so cute. My DCs are younger but did get some little egg gifts from friends. I love it, it’s nice to be generous

whyayepetal · 01/04/2018 13:08

Liverbird that sounds magic Grin What lovely students!

ladybirdsarelovely33 · 01/04/2018 21:51

The 'never done and never will' remarks seem pretty mean spirited to me.
If some children/ parents want to give Easter gifts to their class teachers, let them go ahead. It shows generosity and kindness.

DappledThings · 01/04/2018 21:57

When did any presents for teachers come in? I'm 38, nobody ever did any presents when I was at school for Xmas, end of term or anything.

driveninsanebythehubby · 02/04/2018 11:20

I can honestly say that I didn’t even consider getting Easter gifts for teachers, and am now wondering if people do that in our school (we drop off for Breakfast Club and then use the After School club, so don’t see the other kids and parents to know if they do). I honestly wouldn’t have had a problem with buying their teachers a small Easter Egg if it is a done thing, as I really appreciate everything my kids teachers do for them - in particular my 10 year old who’s teacher this year has been beyond incredible and has really “got” him and helped him with his behaviour issues.

We always do end of year and Xmas gifts - nothing major for either as we really can’t afford it, but something to say “thank you for everything you do”.

LokiBear · 02/04/2018 11:25

No. That is ridiculous. Just no. I baked creme egg brownies for my Year 11 group as a treat because I've worked them hard in the run up to their exams. No way should pupils be buying teachers gifts for Easter though.

daisypond · 02/04/2018 11:30

No. Easter gifts are ridiculous. My DC don't get Easter gifts even. Easter isn't a gift-giving time.

I’ve been teaching for 20 years - it’s not something I’ve seen in any of the schools I’ve been in. Never feel obliged, we don’t expect gifts 🙂
