... to be losing the plot with fabric conditioner?

Why does everyone's laundry smell so much nicer than mine?!

I give fabric conditioners a good sniff in the supermarket but when I used them on my clothes, they just smell blah... what ones genuinely smell nice and last a while?

I can't wait to be able to put my clothes on the line - that's the smell I'm after when I'm having to dry indoors but just can't seem to do it!

Chloroform: a carcinogenic neurotoxin preferred by Ted Bundy

Yes but if he'd mixed it with all the other ingredients of fabric conditioner at least he would've smelled nice

TheShaniaTwainExperience · 28/03/2018 13:58

well for a service wash run an empty drum on the highest temp and longest setting. For instance, mine is a cottons wash at 90 degrees, last for 2 and a half hours

Unless you live in the middle of nowhere and never breathe in vehicle fumes I can't see that a few chemicals in your washing will make much of an impact on general wellbeing...

A service wash is an empty wash on a hot temperature. Its to clean the pipes and workings of your machine. I chuck a handful of soda crystals in the drum when I do mine as a pp said.

Your machine will wash and smell better.

liz70 · 28/03/2018 14:05

To me a service wash is when you hand a bag of dirty washing in at a laundrette and pick it up later, all laundered, dried, folded and possibly ironed.

The hot wash sounds like what I'd term a maintenance (of the machine) wash.

3luckystars · 28/03/2018 14:14

This is very informative! we have been using the short washes always and now I think the washing machine smells like mould (it's just the smell of the fairy) but I hate the smell of it!

Great thread.

Wellfuckmeinbothears · 28/03/2018 14:23

Thank you! Just put an empty 3hr wash at 90!

I don't use fabric conditioner but always use bio washing powder and the washing smells good.

SluttyButty · 28/03/2018 14:30

Doyle pull the soap drawer out and give it a good scrub? I do that along with the self clean/service wash function, I also wipe all around and under the rubber seals because you get loads of rank scum under them. And take your filter out to check there's not any yucky build up there either.

CynthiaRothrock · 28/03/2018 14:30

Stick a table spoon of white vinegar in the wash drawer. Works wonders and makes the nice smells.stick c

*Do you not Doyle 🤔

I never use Fabric Conditioner, I was taught it's bad for clothes. Although I do think my laundry smells clean, fresh and not over scented without it. Although as a perfume junkie also I don't want my scent to be competing with vile cheap smelling Lenor and the like. I just use Daz liquid and add a scoop of vanish powder for whites and use Waitrose own delicate wash for some things. I'm in a flat and can't dry outside so usually put the airer next to the sliding door window and leave it open as much as I can to get some fresh air on it if I'm around at home and sunshine when we have it, which I think helps. Things always seem best after a dollop of sun. My tip is having a clean machine, as pp have commented. I use Crystale from the Pound Shop to clean mine on a hot wash and use white vinegar spray on the drawers before soaking them. Don't know if it's crap but it's easy to use and freshens the machine. Lots of people use bicarb or soda crystals etc but I'm a bit scared of making mayhem. Lots of threads in house keeping on here give good details!

Whatshallidonowpeople · 28/03/2018 14:53

Why do you want your clothes to stink of softener? It's awful when you get a lungful of choking stink of someone

IronMaggie · 28/03/2018 15:05

One of the mums at school is a huge fan of fabric conditioner, and must go through tons of the stuff every week. You can literally smell when one of them is nearby (or has been in a room recently), it's eye wateringly strong. I wouldn't use it anyway as my youngest has terrible eczema but it's completely put me off the stuff. I'm very happy with our clothes being clean and scent-free.

I haven't used FC since DD was a baby, had eczema, and her dermtologist told me never to use it. Both DD and I have sensitive, dry skin - but strangely, Ariel biological liquid doesn't affect either of us, and I've used it for over 30 years. It makes everything smell fresh, but isn't overpowering, and it keeps everything really clean. Smile

Iooselipssinkships · 28/03/2018 15:25

Mine smells lovely but BUT I use half a bottle a wash. I just shove it in all compartments. It's worth it though because the tumble dryer takes a lot of the fragrance out. Sunshine Days by Comfort is heaven. Try them Lenor beads too but chuck loads in. I fucking love fabric conditioner!

TheShaniaTwainExperience · 28/03/2018 15:53

My washing smells really nice because I put the powder in the drum and not the drawer Blush

TheShaniaTwainExperience · 28/03/2018 15:54

Also I’ve been leaving the washing machine door open when it’s not in use, seems to stop it getting musty. And I’m in a hard water area so I use a scoop of soda crystals in the drum with every wash to soften the water.

SluttyButty · 28/03/2018 16:00

TheShania I thought everyone knew to leave the door open on a washing machine when not in use!

TheShaniaTwainExperience · 28/03/2018 16:02

Slutty I don’t know, maybe!

I used to not leave it open because the kitchen is small and i end up bumping into it and it just generally encroaches on the space but it’s worth it right?

RestingBitchFaced · 28/03/2018 16:03

I use the blue lenor - smells lovely for ages
