in hating MASSIVE buggies?

I am sure when I have a baby I will have a massive buggy and look back on this and judge myself.

But at the moment I am SICK to death of being barged out of the way by people with huge buggies, or people with buggies walking next to each other so there is no room to get past on the pavement, or not being able to get to a bit of the shop because a huge buggy is there blocking the way. I asked someone to move their buggy today (politely) in a small shop and she tutted at me. Grrr.

As you say, wait until you're a pram-pusher. It certainly opened my eyes WRT the difficulty of getting around with wheels. People pushing prams have a hard enough time as it is, without coping with extra hostility! Take a deep breath and walk around them.

(This from someone who once tutted and rolled her eyes when a mother with three young kids had the temerity to sit next to me on the train. )

bossykate · 09/05/2007 17:18

i think it is pretty antisocial to have a big buggy if you plan to travel by bus at all ever.

Smurfgirl · 09/05/2007 17:21

Yes but why MASSIVE ones? In shop doors, as you talk to your mates.

(maybe it was just town today )

well, there's massive as in yummy-mummy who has tiny scrap of child but wants to demonstrate extreme wealth. agree that this is v. annoying. but then there's massive because you have more than one small child, and that's unavoidable. believe me, nobody pushes a double buggy for fun.

standing in shop doorways gabbing with mates is just rude, pram or not...

RanToTheHills · 09/05/2007 17:26

ok, try having 2 kids in rush on school run,
pushing up steep, uneven windy hill, on roads, over bumpy pavements, loaded up with shopping and see what size buggy you need

I look forward to yr future thread!

Seriously, yes they CAN be anti-social if used inconsiderately but most people use them because they actually need them ie not regularly going on buses/by car but acutally walking a lot (yes, some of us do!)

Blu · 09/05/2007 17:27

I can see why big hooooj buggies are good for long walks etc, because the big wheels make them much easier to push. But for buses, manoevering in shops and other tight public spaces, a turn-on-a-sixpence-pushing-with-only-one-hand McClaren is less anti-social.

A few years ago, big 3-wheeler buggies became a staus symbol, though (in addition to the people who really need them...standard 4x4 disclaimers) and they can be a real menace. IMO. IME.

RanToTheHills · 09/05/2007 17:28

and look, they're actually bloody heavy to shift so- within reason- it is easier for people to go round them, obviously unless they're blocking an entrance. And they don't pollute, they don't endanger small children unlike cars!

KathyMCMLXXII · 09/05/2007 17:28

Not everyone can afford several buggies, and if you need something that'll also do off-road it can end up pretty massive.
IME you have to pay quite a lot of money to find something robust that'll do for a newborn but that doesn't weigh a ton and take up a lot of space.

Blu · 09/05/2007 17:28

Actually, what Rowan said.

And the number of people who buy them as status symbols, Fio, terrible these days, isn't it?

Obvioulsy wheelchairs are a different kettle of fish.

Oh I don't care if people have big buggies - whatever.

Its assuming that because you have a buggie you can block the pavement, shops etc and then tut at me for trying to get round you. GRRRRRRR.

(yes i know i will backtrack in a few years)

Blu · 09/05/2007 17:34

LOL!

Will look out for weather reports of a Flying Buggy over kent.

(I meant a wheelchair as status symbol, btw - but didn't realise you had squandered your grant on a fully-pimped pram!)

Blu · 09/05/2007 17:34

You are rihgt, Smurf - it isn't the buggy it's the double-parking that is the issue!

3sEnough · 09/05/2007 17:35

Dreeadful - these budgies just fly about, being silly and getting feathers everywhere - blooming disgrace.

ahem - sorry but a three wheeler takes up the space of two maclaren type on a bus...

this is really one of my pet hates...! every buggy buying guide you read tells you to consider whether you will be using public transport or not.

Smurfgirl · 09/05/2007 17:36

is it pink leather diamante fio - v.popular in hull you know

(I need more sleep)

I bought a massive buggie before ds1 was born. Great for long walks where I live (the middle of nowhere) but was glad to swap to a lightweight stroller when he was old enough because the big one was impossible round shops. But no worse than the numpties who stop their trollies to have a nice chat to each other and block the entire shopping aisle.

Smurfgirl · 09/05/2007 17:39

I am absolutely 100% sure i will end up with a massive pram and will whine about students trying to get round me in about 3 years.
