Hi.

Does anyone have any suggestions where would be best to go for a day out?

Kids are 14 and 11 . They like new places so we are visiting different cities and some ideas what to do in the above places would be great.

Thanks

Well- where do you live?
ThinkTank is a bit young for 14yo, tbh. Aimed more KS2.

AmysTiara · 28/03/2018 10:17

We are in Liverpool Kings, so easy to travel to Birmingham, Newcastle or Sheffield which is why I settled on those 3 places.

Newcastle! Plenty to do and lovely, friendly city but I’m biased Grin!

KingsHeathen · 28/03/2018 10:26

Just checking you weren't coming from Taunton or something! Grin

I don't feel there's that much exciting to see in Bham, and living here, we take our children elsewhere to see things. Unless you all like shopping Hmm lots here for that!

Our favourite places have been York, and London.

coffeeX10 · 28/03/2018 10:35

I'm from Sheffield - loads more to do in Birmingham or Newcastle

skippykips · 28/03/2018 10:39

Birmingham - you could do drayton manor, quite local.
Dudley zoo.
Botanical gardens
Hoo farm (telford)

BarbaraofSevillle · 28/03/2018 10:45

Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool not appeal, or have you been to those places a lot already?

Do the kids like museums or would they shuffle round them muttering about how lame they were?

Birmingham city centre and the surrounding area is quite nice, the library, the canals, the back to backs, Cadbury World New Street Station, and just wandering around, but I'm not sure how attractive it is to teens/pre-teens.

BarbaraofSevillle · 28/03/2018 10:46

Sorry, just seen you're already in Liverpool, Manchester or Leeds then?

Skarossinkplunger · 28/03/2018 10:51

Newcastle has just been named Best Place to Visit 2018 by the Rough Guide. Why would you go anywhere else?

veggiethrower · 28/03/2018 10:54

Newcastle definitely - choose one of Centre for Life, Discovery or Hancock Museums - have a look at the websites to see what's on.
Or one of the Roman forts - Arbeia or Segedunum - can get to them on the Metro.
Go for a walk on the quayside, across the millenium bridge and have a look at the Baltic art gallery (cool lifts) and the Sage.

acornsandnuts · 28/03/2018 10:54

Necastle. When are you planning your trip. The great north exhibition looks good but not until summer getnorth2018.com/

HPandBaconSandwiches · 28/03/2018 10:59

Newcastle.
Bridges on the Quayside
Discovery museum
Centre for Life
Beamish museum slightly further south is an amazing working museum
Hadrian’s wall with Roman remains
Beautiful beach at Tynemouth with an old monastery
Much better with a car if you can - let’s you explore all of stunning northumberland too. But the city centre has a great buzz to it.

HPandBaconSandwiches · 28/03/2018 11:00

Kids are pretty easy going and like seeing new places.

Acorns we are going next week in the Easter hols.

I think I'll go for Newcastle this time. Thanks again. Grin

A few years since I last went, but I thought the Magna science adventure centre was good. www.visitmagna.co.uk/ It's Rotherham but easy enough to get to from the motorway Meadowhall junction.

You can visit this shop in Rotherham town centre, which might amuse for 15 minutes grimmandco.co.uk/ If you do want to visit, check the opening hours.

I doubt the rest of Rotherham would appeal though, so perhaps head into Sheffield, they are near enough.

though to be honest I'm struggling to think what else might be of interest to kids of that age around Sheffield, unless they are into architecture, art or walking/nature. You could probably walk round the nice bits of the town centre in 10 minutes. The Millenium museum and Winter Gardens (Sheffield town centre) often have special events over school holidays. Kelham Island museum a bit further out of the town centre.

Parking in the town centre is a right pain though, it might be better to use the park & ride at Meadowhall and get the tram in.

www.butterflyhouse.co.uk/ North Anston just off the A57 towards Worksop.

Perhaps a trip down one of the Peak District caves, the Blue John mine or Speedwell cavern, which are also fairly near Sheffield.

FineSally · 28/03/2018 11:31

Beamish (Co Durham) is a fascinating place & you would really need a full day there to get the most out of it.

I'd also recommend a trip to the National Coalmining Museum at Capthorne near Wakefield. You can go underground, and its FREE.

FineSally · 28/03/2018 11:32

^Caphouse, not capthorne. I'm always getting them mixed up.

AnnieOH1 · 28/03/2018 11:33

Hasn't Magna gone now?
