To think glass tables were invented by Satan?

I live in a pre-furnished apartment, on my employers property - my living area has a glass table.
Why? Why would anyone choose a glass table? The bloody thing never ever looks clean, regardless of how many times I clean it. When I wipe it it smears so I have to spend an obscene amount of time carefully going around, looking at it at all angles for smudges.
We also live in Saudi Arabia, meaning its perpetually covered in a fine layer of dust, making me look scutty.

Oh and to round things off (Grin) the fucker is circular and circular tables are shit.

AIBU?

We stayed in a holiday let once.

We had the choice of paying £60 and leaving it as it was or cleaning it before we left and no charge. The owner would come round at 10 am to collect the keys and check all was in order.

The let had a huge dining table as you describe (and two marble or something bathrooms) but OMG that table. I could not get it streak free. Every time I though it looked ok I looked again and there were more streaks.

I was still buffing it at 10 am as the doorbell rang, sweating slightly. The owner laughed and said 'Oh yes, that table-it's a bugger to clean isn't it?' and laughed.

If we stay again I will be handing out the £60 on arrival.

I hate them!

I had one and used the excuse of us having a baby in the house to get rid of it and buy a wooden one.

UnsuspectedItem · 27/03/2018 15:01

My theory is no one buys them of they have to clean it themselves.
Like chandeliers.

I hate them. Had a glass coffee table and fell onto it. Still have the scar from the corner. They're pretty unsafe. You can't see them properly.

Not only hard to clean, show dust.. They feel brittle and sharp.. Always scared of braking it's, don't like the feeling they give off

Sparklingbrook · 27/03/2018 15:02

Yes, everyone gets rid of them and they are snapped up for rental properties and holiday lets. Grin

Mine does seem to radiate some kind of smug arrogance. Like a cat that's trod in fox poo.

We stayed in a house in Spain once that had a glass coffee table. One evening DH put his glass on it and it shattered.
I just don't know the point and you also can't scratch yourself during dinner without everyone seeing

MayFayner · 27/03/2018 15:22

I used to manage an apartment building that had been fitted out with glass coffee tables in each unit (all apartments rented).

The bloody things started shattering spontaneously in the middle of the night Shock

The first tenant that reported their table shattering of its own accord got short shrift from me, I'll admit. But then when several others followed suit it was clear the tables were faulty. Something to do with changes in temperature causing them to shatter. They were the ones that are made from just one piece of bent glass, lethal things!

RyvitaBrevis · 27/03/2018 15:24

And if you do succeed in getting the table completely smudge- and streak-free, then you can see every crumb and speck of dust on the floor below. Ugh.
