To ask if a prospective employer has to do this

If you meet all the criteria for a job and don’t get short listed, if you ask the employer for feedback on how short list was done and why you didn’t make it, do they have to provide it?

Yes

cloudtree · 26/03/2018 21:49

No they don't. Why do you think they do New?

Ginmakesitallok · 26/03/2018 21:50

No they don't

Pinkprincess1978 · 26/03/2018 21:50

Yes they should let you know which of the desirable criteria they have used to shortlist - and therefore why you weren't shortlisted.

cloudtree · 26/03/2018 21:59

I'm not sure why people think this is something an employer has to do. It really isn't. They sometimes will but they're not obliged to.

Ritzsaltedcrackers · 26/03/2018 21:59

What’s behind this is I have a suspicion I was not shortlisted for a job because of my political views.

OP posts:
cloudtree · 26/03/2018 21:59

And in any event half the time the response would be "your cv wasn't as good as those we shortlisted"

RatRolyPoly · 26/03/2018 22:00

Nothing to lose in asking I suppose.

NewYearNewMe18 · 26/03/2018 22:02

Because they have to demonstrate , if challenged, that the selection process isn't racist/sexit/ageist/disablist and so forth.

maxelly · 26/03/2018 22:03

No they don't HAVE to do this. Companies often choose to give feedback simply to be helpful, transparent or to forestall discrimination complaints but there's no legal obligation. You could try putting in a 'subject access request' for any data they hold on you - if they shortlist using an electronic system this may have notes against your application?

topcat2014 · 26/03/2018 22:03

What are your political views OP?

How would you fit in with a small team who are of different persuasions?

How did these even get discussed in interview?

Ritzsaltedcrackers · 26/03/2018 22:04

They are very gender critical and I’m FB friends with someone who works there.

OP posts:
topcat2014 · 26/03/2018 22:04

Is ageism actually a protected characteristic now?

Mind you, the average age where I work is over 45, so we cannot be guilty of that :)

purplecorkheart · 26/03/2018 22:04

They do not have to but some may.

Rawhh · 26/03/2018 22:04

No they don't have to provide their assesment criteria.

Alot of the time it is down to the intricacies of each CV. It's never as simple as saying that criteria used for shortlist was 'x,y and z'.

Ritzsaltedcrackers · 26/03/2018 22:05

And I post my views on FB. I did wonder if it would be an issue when I applied, her knowing my views. She’d have been involved in selection process.

OP posts:
topcat2014 · 26/03/2018 22:05

I am not aware of anyone having any particular views on gender where I work, so it wouldn't crop up as an issue for us.

Timeforabiscuit · 26/03/2018 22:06

I doubt op is being blackballed for having a preference for kittens on her social media, when all her prospective team are avid dog people.

NewIdeasToday · 26/03/2018 22:07

Even if they did have to give feedback they’re hardly going to say that they didn’t shortlist due to your views. They’ll just say that they had other better qualified applicants.

Timeforabiscuit · 26/03/2018 22:08

On the other hand, in small teams i know people who are friends being filtered out, purely because the team dynamic may be disrupted. Its difficult to have work and friendship in the same place.

wobytide · 26/03/2018 22:11

So you have outspoken views on something

The hiring company has had outspoken views on someone's suitability for the role

Their choice, same as it's yours

TheClacksAreDown · 26/03/2018 22:11

Political views are not a protected characteristic.

Any feedback you’re Likely to get would probably be along the lines of “many quality candidates, unable to interview everyone

altiara · 26/03/2018 22:15

I’m not sure. We definitely have to have a reason incase of a challenge but we will usually only shortlist candidates that are currently working in our department as contractors.

Nickynackynoodle · 26/03/2018 22:15

Hello again!! Reported.

Ritzsaltedcrackers · 26/03/2018 22:20
