Is it morally wrong to pick all the numbers from the top row on Countdown?

AIBU to think that ethically, you shouldn't choose 4 'big numbers' every time. I believe it gives an unfair advantage and makes you look a bit of a knob.

My husband thinks all fair in competition.

Who's right?

But all the contestants have to use the same numbers so how do the big numbers give an unfair advantage?

Elementtree · 26/03/2018 14:48

Ha Grin I've never seen anyone do that. It does seem underhand. Was it today?

MyRelationshipIsWeird · 26/03/2018 14:49

LTB

The only correct way is two from the top and the rest from anywhere else. What sort of monster would pick 4 big numbers?!

Elementtree · 26/03/2018 14:50

Presumably because if you are already winning you can ruin your opponents opportunity to catch up?

itallhappensforareason · 26/03/2018 14:50
Grin

Although unusual, I'm not sure it gives anyone an unfair advantage as the opposing player would also have the same advantage. I'm all for simpler maths!

InsomniacAnonymous · 26/03/2018 14:51

I don't understand how it gives an unfair advantage when you've both got the same numbers to work with.

farmerswifey2 · 26/03/2018 14:54

It was today!!!

It gives an unfair advantage because you can have practiced at home, certain of 4 of the numbers you are going to get (25, 50, 75 & 100).

OP posts:
jay55 · 26/03/2018 14:56

But they can all practice at home just in case they have a shitty opponent

iklboo · 26/03/2018 14:58

They get plenty of notice they're going to be on so everyone gets the opportunity to practice if they want.

Longdistance · 26/03/2018 15:08

Well, you could do the same with constenents and vowels can’t you?
‘I’ll have all vowels please?’

Mattttttt · 26/03/2018 15:28
InsomniacAnonymous · 26/03/2018 16:10

Longdiatance No, it's against the rules to have over a certain number of consonants and vowels.

NewPapaGuinea · 26/03/2018 16:29

But you don’t know the sum before hand so how does practicing help?

I can only only really see it helps by sabotaging someone being able to close the gap.

MaggieFS · 26/03/2018 16:52

@Mattttttt That's incredible! Haven't seen that one before!

divadee · 26/03/2018 17:01

As morally wrong as going for the minus offer on the chase which gives me the rage.

TuffTuff · 26/03/2018 17:02

I hate it, and agree that it makes the picker look like a knob.

ShakeShakeTheMuffin · 26/03/2018 17:14

Watched the clip... Think I'd seen it before. Loved Carol's reaction. The fact 953 is so easy to get meant any normal person (me included) would just settle for that.
However, I think the guy who got 952 should be congratulated not scorned. He's on countdown FFS, it's meant to be a demonstration of wits and logic. Well done to him. Anyone who is pissed off is just jealous they can't do that!
To answer OP, I think it's perfectly acceptable to choose whichever numbers you want. Each contestant gets to choose numbers once each, it's up to them.

priority9 · 26/03/2018 17:38

952 is easy though
(25+75)*100=1000
1000-50=950
950+(6/3)=952

Crochetnanigans · 26/03/2018 17:48

100*100 is 10000

guinnessguzzler · 26/03/2018 18:19

Anything involving 75 is morally wrong therefore YANBU.

priority9 · 26/03/2018 18:56

Oh gosh my maths is bad!
