Why we should be terrified of self-ID

Yes yes another trans thread - but despite the fact writing about the below is literally triggering for me (so much so I've not just changed username, I've set up a new account) - I am not being U and it's really important people read this.

Do you want to know the problem with self-ID? Let's take the below as an example.

This monster (can't bring myself to type his name) brutally killed a woman a decade ago: www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5543081/Drug-addict-killed-Harrow-masters-girl-let-day-release.html

I knew him. Not just in passing. Actually knew him. Spent time with him alone, despite the fact even then he made me nervous and uncomfortable.

After he was locked up I thought that would be the last I heard of him. Not only, it is now being reported, is he regularly being taken out and about for day trips in preparation for parole, he has, allegedly, started wearing women's clothes.

If the law allowing self-ID is passed, he could throw on a dress and legitimately saunter into any designated female space without challenge and that fucking horrifies me. I hope it horrifies you too.

No, it's the usage of unfounded rumours around people that have done abhorrent things and are widely hated by the public to create hysteria and panic to back up a viewpoint on a government proposal.

The Ian Huntley story was in a national newspaper.

Should criminals not be allowed to express their gender identities?

MrsGrahamNorton · 26/03/2018 16:45

It was in a national right-leaning newspaper quoting fellow inmates of an A category prison and the prison spokesperson said Huntley had made no request whatsoever. And it hasn't been mentioned since despite him frequently being in the newspapers.

Critical thinking skills should be employed when assessing 'journalism'.

Twinnypops · 26/03/2018 16:55

Why is a violent criminal potentially attacking vulnerable people a female only issue? No, I wouldn't want him in female-only places, but I also wouldn't want him in male-only places.

TerfsUp · 26/03/2018 16:57

If a thread doesn't interest you, don't open it.

That requires both common sense and self-control.

I am not terrified of self-ID but I think that it is a terrible idea.

TerfsUp · 26/03/2018 17:23

I don't know if the trans issue is a red herring or not, to be honest, as there isn't enough information to go on.

Neolara · 26/03/2018 17:36

I think in this case the main threat to others seems to have comes from the fact the person had paranoid schizophrenia and was clearly very, very unwell. I would assume that if he is being released, doctors feel he is not a risk to society.

PsychoPumpkin · 26/03/2018 17:44

‘Oh no, another’s trans thread!’

Don’t click on a thread with self ID in the title then geniuses!

And you want to remove the rights of all ###### people for the sake of a handful of bad eggs. No. You don't get to discriminate like that.

Guns, America?

donquixotedelamancha · 26/03/2018 19:42

Obligatory: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/214118

You don't get to discriminate like that. I know this is MN where transphobia is ignored, but no.

Please don't call the OP transphobic. This is the very model of a legitimate concern about the way legislation (and the policies of various organisations) might work in real life. If the (personally involved) OP doesn't have the right to discuss this, who does? Fair enough to disagree with her, but don't call names for raising it.

JellySlice · 26/03/2018 22:23

And you want to remove the rights of all ###### for the sake of a handful of €€€€€€. No. You don't get to discriminate like that.

Let's fill in the blanks:

And you want to remove the rights of all women for the sake of a handful of trans women No. You don't get to discriminate like that.

Or doesn't it apply? Hmm
