To think that all hotel rooms these days have en suite bathrooms?

Settle an argument please. I haven't stayed in an hotel since about 1998 that didn't have an en suite (and that was an absolute shithole). I just don't think shared bathrooms exist anymore. I can't imagine anyone would want to share a bathroom unless it was in a cheap youth hostel or a campsite. I'd rather stay at home.

Husband disagrees and says loads of hotels still have shared bathrooms. He has nothing to base this on as he only ever stays in hotels with me and we have never, in 14 years, not had an en suite. But he's adamant and says it's quite normal.

Who's right?

In case anyone is wondering, the "disagreement" arose while watching National Lampoon's European Vacation where someone walked in on the wife while she was in the bath.

You're right. The end.

JessicaJonesJacket · 25/03/2018 22:57

It depends if you mean UK or abroad. I've stayed in hotels in other countries where they had shared bathrooms but I haven't stayed in any in the UK.

BennyTheBall · 25/03/2018 22:57

Your husband is wrong.

He is thinking of a camp site.

evilharpy · 25/03/2018 22:58

Holy shit, I found one.

I have stayed ine ones in UK with shared bathrooms, but I am prone to cheapness.

RedPandaMama · 25/03/2018 22:59

It depends where you stay. We have stayed in a few places that have shared bathrooms recently as they are so much cheaper, around £40 a night. A lovely Tudor building in Lincoln and an Edwardian villa in London near Paddington station. Both around £35 a night which is an absolute steal - we were literally only there to sleep so used the bathroom once in the evening and once in the morning. No issues with either.
Probably wouldn't consider them hotels though. Not hostels, but not hotels. Somewhere in between.

MrsFionaCharming · 25/03/2018 22:59

I’ve stayed in a couple of pubs with rooms above that have shared bathrooms, but not big hotels.

BakedBeans47 · 25/03/2018 23:00

In the UK I’d say it was pretty rare nowadays

In France though - Formule 1s

AlexanderHamilton · 25/03/2018 23:00

Lots of smaller hotel guest house type places have shared bathrooms.

HibbityBlibbity · 25/03/2018 23:00

Guest houses or b&bs have a lot of shared bathrooms, but I’d say it was rare in a hotel these days

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 25/03/2018 23:01

You obviously don't watch "Four in a bed"

We were shocked when a hotel in Blackpool had a shared bathroom. It was an expensive hotel not a cheap B&B. Luckily we had one room with en suite so we all used that rather than the shared bathroom. Looking back the booking information did say - just not that clearly. Having spoken to people since it's more common than I'd have thought as lots had experienced in. All in older character hotels.

Scentofwater · 25/03/2018 23:03

In the last 3 years I’ve stayed in two ‘hotels’ with shared bathrooms. One was a total shithole, but admittedly even this one we ended up with an ensuite despite initially being allocated shared. So shitty it had all new unpainted doors as they had clearly all recently been kicked in.

The other one was definitely not shitty, but not really a proper hotel. You let yourself in as there was no reception, and it definitely had a vague hostel feel despite being more like an upmarket Travel lodge.

That’s not helpful is it. Sorry.

Tokelau · 25/03/2018 23:03

I know a hotel in Austria that doesn’t have en suite bathrooms. I wouldn’t stay there though. I like a private bathroom.

pingoose · 25/03/2018 23:03

I used to work for one of the big online hotel websites, and yes, there are still lots of hotels around the world that have shared bathrooms. Especially in Europe and South America.

Pinkprincess1978 · 25/03/2018 23:04

We stopped in a b&q about 12 years ago (we didn't book it) and it was shared bathrooms. Our room was next to a toilet so we were kept up all night with people visiting the toilet. Never, ever again!

Leeds2 · 25/03/2018 23:04

I have never stayed in a hotel without an en suite. To be fair, when you are booking on line, which I do, the facilities are quite clear. And I would never book anything which wasn't en suite. Tbf, I don't even check, just assume that it is. In the same way I assume it has free wi fi.

Barmaid101 · 25/03/2018 23:05

Place I work in has two rooms which share a bathroom, they are very rarely both booked at the same time and the price reflects it’s a shared bathroom

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 25/03/2018 23:07

I stayed in an awful B&B above a pub in Hull a couple of years back that had a shared bathroom (even though I'd paid the extra for an en suite). There weren't a lot of options open at an hours notice.

Plenty of hostels do too of course, but then I'm not averse to dorm rooms in the name of saving money.

But all your business standard budget hotels (god knows I stay in enough of them) like Premier Inn, Travelodge, Ibis etc are totally en suite

Nightshiftmad · 25/03/2018 23:07

I only once stayed in a s*ithole hotel with a shared bathroom I think somewhere in Scotland. Every hotel I've stayed at appart from that has had an en suite bathroom. You win over hubby.

LimonViola · 25/03/2018 23:08

Yeah, loads of hotels in the U.K. have shared bathrooms. I've stayed in plenty. Always the cheapest hotel I could find, would expect an en suite for a higher price.

Doesn't really bother me unless the stay is more of an experience rather than a place to crash for a few hours.

Doesn't mean it's a hostel as hostels are where you share your bedroom too. I'm staying in an eighteen person hostel next week!

LimonViola · 25/03/2018 23:09

Pinkprincess1978 Was it an actual bathroom with proper plumbing or just one of those show ones out on the shop floor?

My post should have said it's an eighteen person to a room hostel I'm in next week.

Zaphodsotherhead · 25/03/2018 23:09

I just stayed in a hotel in central London with shared bathrooms. I think some of the 'posher' rooms were en suite, but as I was there on a very tight budget, I went for cheap and cheerful and a bathroom down the corridor.

GrainneWail · 25/03/2018 23:17

I stayed in one in London about 8 years ago. It was not planned or pleasant.

dorothyparka · 25/03/2018 23:18

We stopped in a b&q about 12 years ago (we didn't book it) and it was shared bathrooms
I think the bathrooms in B&Q might be for display purposes onlyGrin
