Do you love it? Pros and cons? Considering doing ours. Lawn is extremely wet and mossy. Would like it nice for DC to play on. Would be interested to hear from anyone who has one. thanks

Love it-great in all seasons.

Singlebutmarried · 25/03/2018 22:58

Ours is fab.

JW13 · 25/03/2018 23:03

Love it. Looks good all year round. DH loves not having to mow it Grin. If I had a sunny garden and the skills to keep a real lawn alive/green I'd prefer real, but I have neither so artificial it is!

Totsntantrums · 25/03/2018 23:11

Are they terribly expensive? We are thinking about getting ours done. What do you have to lay them on? We currently have stones.

Womble75 · 25/03/2018 23:12

Love it - best thing we did to our house. 2 DC's and a large dog. No more mud, always looks lovely. Easy to look after.

Littleredboat · 25/03/2018 23:13

Watching with interest...

Birdsgottafly · 25/03/2018 23:16

What is causing it to be wet?

In areas were there has been lawns replaced with artificial grass there has been more flooding and other issues.

GnomeDePlume · 25/03/2018 23:20

We have had ours for a couple of years now. No regrets at all. We weed killered the existing turf played by the builder. Spread some sand to level it off and DH laid the artificial turf on top. The odd weed comes through and we use spot weed killer on those.

I haven't spotted a downside yet.

TimesNewRoman · 25/03/2018 23:57

Thanks, seems like all good experience.

Birdsgottafly poor drainage /clay soil beneath. Due to layout of neighbouring gardens it's not possible to do anything about the drainage

kimanda · 25/03/2018 23:58

Problem is, they always LOOK fake.

Pfftkids · 26/03/2018 00:00

Do you have to Hoover it?

EastMidsMummy · 26/03/2018 00:38

Everyone with taste will laugh at your stupid fake plastic lawn.

GnomeDePlume · 26/03/2018 01:05

It depends what you want out of your lawn. Is it something you want to look at or use? Do you want an all weather surface to play on even when the weather is poor?

They arent natural, no getting around that. But on the other hand a grass lawn isnt exactly natural either.

Buster72 · 26/03/2018 10:14

I would love a fake lawn. A dog kids and awful drainage means my garden is a morass from October to May
I will laugh at the sucker who has to now his lawn. But at £2500.00 it is an expense I can not afford

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 26/03/2018 10:21

my neighbour has one, and it looks really good. The following caveats apply:

  • they only have a very small lawned area. we have small courtyard style gardens and they have a mix of paving, pots and a little lawn. It might look less good and more obviously "fake" over a big expanse.
  • they used a top of the range one apparently (small area so cost doable)
  • our gardens are north-facing and very shaded, in a notoriously cloudy part of the country, so no-one in our street will ever have a decent grass lawn. Those of us with "grass" actually mostly have slightly muddy moss.
Hellsbellscockleshells · 26/03/2018 10:29

Do you have to anything to maintain it and how much more is it per meter than turn please? We paid to have some supposedly proper drainage in ours a few years ago but it didn’t really help. DH has tried returning ours umpteen times and also tried grass seed. But due to lack of drainage, Moss, shade at the top end of the garden due to neighboring gardens high trees our grass always looks rubbish. We haven’t a massive area but it’s not small probably a medium sized garden with a big dog and massive trampoline.

GladAllOver · 26/03/2018 10:32

Artificial grass actually needs better drainage than natural grass, because it's not soaking up the water and breathing it out. You will need to provide better drainage underneath first if you don't want it to squelch underfoot.
The seller won't tell you that of course.

Gertrudethestag · 26/03/2018 10:38

Oooh I am interested too but worried about neighbourly cats pooing on it. Anyone had this problem? I imagine its like trying to clean shite from velcro...

But I am probably wrong. Hope so because our grass is boggy and shady. And useless

fourquenelles · 26/03/2018 10:39

Love mine, as do my three dogs. It does need raking to keep it looking tiptop and I have to disinfect it regulary to help break up the urine crystals that can get trapped underneath it. Less hassle than real grass and far less muddy though.

fourquenelles · 26/03/2018 10:40

Oh and I poo pick twice a day and its easy to remove - not velcro at all. A watering can to hand if there is any sticky residue and job's a goodun.

Gertrudethestag · 26/03/2018 10:41

glad cross post! So glad you said about it needing better drainage! I never thought about it like that before

fourquenelles · 26/03/2018 10:47

Doesn't look too bad and moden fake grass is much less "fake" looking than in the past. My little patch, with grass specifically designed for pets, was £1000.

To ask about your artificial lawn
EatTheChocolateTeapot · 26/03/2018 10:53

It is terrible for the environment, replacing plants with plastic.

Pinkprincess1978 · 26/03/2018 10:57

Our n cat door had theirs done last year, small garden and tiny square at front - cost them £2000 to have done.

It does look good especially compared to our terrible lawns. We spent a couple of hours yesterday digging over our back as it doesn't drain and is a bog. Only done a 1/6 of it so far - we are laying a layer of gravel/stones then laying back over dug up and broken up mud then a layer of top soil then either going to try grass seed and or turfing it.

We were taking to neighbour on other side who has same problem as us so he is waiting to see if it works but we both said if we had the money we would pay for artificial.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 26/03/2018 11:01

I think it’s irresponsible use of plastic.

I’ve been trying to cut down as far as possible.
