To hate the clocks changing

??? I can't be the only one
And I live in the north. With kids who catch a bus to school.
I understand about making winter mornings safer but what about winter evenings? Surely cars, headlights and general awareness are better these days than when it was set.
Tractors these days are super high tech
Someone please explain the rationale I need good reasons or it's going to continue to bother me

OP posts:
Creambun2 · 25/03/2018 23:16

Why should the rest of the country suffer to accommodate Scottish farmers?

LapdanceShoeshine · 25/03/2018 23:19

Scottish farmers??? Grin

Probably makes no diff to them as farmers start so early anyway. It's everybody else it's a problem for.

kimanda · 25/03/2018 23:21

Doesn't bother me.

Creambun2 · 25/03/2018 23:21

Whenever there is talk about changing this, government officials always go on about farming in Scotland!

whichwayisitnow · 25/03/2018 23:26

I've been waiting for this thread all day Grin

There is always a thread about this, twice a year, as regular as clockwork.

TittyGolightly · 25/03/2018 23:28

You don't get a day added on to the week or an extra day on a month

You do every 4th February..........

TittyGolightly · 25/03/2018 23:29

Hard enough being a night owl in British society, without making it worse every bloody March.

MimpiDreams · 25/03/2018 23:31

Instead of a Brexit referendum I'd have preferred a 'should we leave the clocks well alone' referendum!

I read somewhere that Brussels is planning on doing this post Brexit. Apparently they've wanted to do it for a while but the UK vetoed it.

MsHomeSlice · 25/03/2018 23:36

it does not give anyone MORE daylight, it just moves it about

I hate it. It's a NONSENSE! Just stop buggering about with the hours and enough already.

ALittleAubergine · 25/03/2018 23:38

I would support stopping the whole nonsense about clocks changing.

kiplingback · 25/03/2018 23:40

The clock changing has nothing to do with accommodating farmers, it was introduced during the war so the people had more hours of light in the evening.

I'm the winter we have GMT. We have ALWAYS had GMT.

In the summer we change from GMT to BST. If the changes were to be oft farmers in winter we would have moved away from GMT

whichwayisitnow · 25/03/2018 23:41

Brussels won't be able to change the fact that the Meridian Line runs through Greenwich though, will they? Or that the whole world takes the time from us. Yes, I bet that goes down really well in Brussels. Not.

steff13 · 25/03/2018 23:41

Here, it's done on a state-by-state basis. Most states do it, but some don't. They changed it a few years ago - we used to "spring forward" at the end of March, and "fall back" at the end of October. Now it's mid-March and mid-November.

Trillis · 25/03/2018 23:41

I'd also leave the clocks alone - but I'd stay on GMT the whole year round. I hate it in the summer when I'm going to bed and it's still light.

angryburd · 25/03/2018 23:41

@creambun2 why should Scottish children have to go to school in the dark?

HopeClearwater · 25/03/2018 23:45

Yes, I bet that goes down really well in Brussels. Not

I bet they don’t give a stuff. It’s historical fact.

kiplingback · 25/03/2018 23:46

Scottish children and farmers have nothing to do with this.

I get the absolute rage on these posts every time, it's my pet hate.

Winter time have NEVER changed. Never. Not at all. Winter time is standard GMT.

It's summertime that changed.

HermionesRightHook · 25/03/2018 23:48

I am seriously thinking about starting a rumour that GMT is a European conspiracy to drum up support to keep us on BST permanently. It's got BRITISH in the name, amirite? QED.

PickAChew · 25/03/2018 23:52

Quite, Kipling. It's nice to have the sun at its highest point at midday.

DH has just lectured me about not staying up too late on account of the clock change. I asked him if he'd like me to turn in before my usual midnight and keep him awake with my tossing and turning.

TempusFugitive · 25/03/2018 23:53

I love it this side of the year but i HATE it in october

BrendasUmbrella · 25/03/2018 23:54

I don't like the clock change because I'm a fool, and I have form for either sleeping in an hour too late or getting to an appointment/work an hour too early.

whichwayisitnow · 25/03/2018 23:56

I hate it in the summer when I'm going to bed and it's still light.
Well the alternative is that you get woken by the sun shining in your window and waking you up at half past three in the morning.
We can't change the way the Earth tilts on its axis.

73kittycat73 · 25/03/2018 23:58

You don't get a day added on to the week or an extra day on a month

Except in a leap year. Wink

yorkshireyummymummy · 26/03/2018 00:10

All this thread shows is that you cannot please all of the people.
So many different opinions,
Personally, I like the clocks changing. I like the lighter nights and then i like getting my hour back and the cosy feeling you get in October.

And, as far as I am aware there are no plans for change so hopefully I will keep getting the clocks changed ( trying hard not to have a mega smug face! )

GnotherGnu · 26/03/2018 00:21

Winter time have NEVER changed. Never. Not at all. Winter time is standard GMT.

It's summertime that changed.

Depends what you mean by "changed". In the 1960s there was a spell when it was BST all year round, so winter time clearly changed then. And it was a major improvement. There's no point in clinging to GMT out of sentiment. It's seriously depressing when it's dark at 4 pm.

As for Scottish children going to school in the dark - they could postpone the school day to start at 9.30 or 10 a.m. Easily sorted.
