About Earth hour??

Why do so little people take part in this? Surely our planet bloody matters! We do earth hour every year and find it's a lovely way to spend a bit of quiet time together, with all the schools drilling eco things into the kids, you would think more people would switch off for an hour Hmm

I didn't realise it was Earth Hour until it was too late Sad
Will try and be more aware next year.

abbsisspartacus · 25/03/2018 03:00

When was it?

CadyHeron · 25/03/2018 03:04

8.30pm until 9.30pm (UK time)

Never do Earth hour, just try and do my environmental part throughout the year, don’t need to sit in the dark at a certain time to do that. If it gets others interested that’s good, but it’s not for me.

YerAuntFanny · 25/03/2018 03:26

We don't take part at a specific time because it's something I'm always conscious of and try to do my bit all year not just when I'm told I should do.

MerryShitmas · 25/03/2018 03:34

Because as with most "awareness raising" activities, it's pretty much just virtue signalling.
I've (without needing to beg people to join me) managed to eradicate around 80% of my plastic consumption, my home is powered exclusively with solar energy. I do not use any gas. I have a rainwater tank. We have one car - a hybrid electric car (we would go fully electric but unfortunately it's not feasible when some of our essential shopping - eg, dry food stock ups, is a four hour round trip). We eat no imported food and try to buy stuff made within a 150km radius, we also grow some of our own food. I'm not particularly green fingered but manage to grow peppers, spring onions, potatoes and leeks. Mostly from waste products. We're not perfect and I don't believe anyone can be but I'd rather quietly do my bit (while recognising others may not be able to do so) and that pretty much everything damages the environment SOMEHOW but reduction is the way forward.
How will sitting in the dark for an hour actually help that?

I'd rather some cheap/free educational Ebooks widely distributed to help people reduce waste, reduce use of plastics and harmful materials, educating people on food seasons (particularly in the UK where many are buying berries in winter) and food miles and eating locally where possible and even growing your own food with limited space.
You can regrow a leek in a glass of water on the window sill and every effort helps... same for spring onions and some other veg. Doing that, small steps wherever possible for you, is going to be a lot more effective in combating the damage we're doing to our earth than sitting in the dark for an hour.

We do what we can throughout the year. We don't sit in the cold and dark for an hour just to be able to post about it on Facebook.
