To think seats aren’t reserved on a train if they don’t put tickets out?

Or are they still reserved regardless of tickets?

Some woman just asked me to move despite there being 8 rows of identical seats free behind me.

I've reserved seats and them not be marked...someone did get slightly arsey but I offered to show my ticket but they just grumbled off...

SpringNowPlease2018 · 24/03/2018 22:00

I don't how train companies make this so hard
If you reserved a seat and have a ticket with the number on it, it's yours.

TheRagingGirl · 24/03/2018 22:01

If they're reserved, they're reserved - if I have a seat reservation with my ticket, then that's my seat. I reserved & paid for it in advance for a reason.

Not all trains use the physical paper reservation at the seat: they have electric notification in a display above the seat. Thos is also standard throughout continental European trains. Maybe you just didn't look?

TheRagingGirl · 24/03/2018 22:03

another woman who said she didn't even notice the electronic screen with my reserved from X on

I'm always amazed at how unobservant people are.

Shednik · 24/03/2018 22:04

I refused to move when this happened to me. Only there wasn't plenty of space. I was with four dc who I would have had to sit separately not knowing whether whatever seat we sat in would then be reserved.

The ticket collector took my side and said that in these cases there are no reservations.

Had I been on my own, I'd have moved.

alligatortoss · 24/03/2018 22:05

Yeah like I said, no one pays extra for a reserved seat on this train.

@shednick- why didn’t you reserve seats if you were going to be that inflexible due to the number of children you were travelling with? So someone who goes to the effort of reserving a seat, for whatever reason they do- has less of a priority than someone who juts jumps on and makes no plans and arrangements for ensuring they and their children travel together? You just assume I have children, I trump everyone, so tough? I’d be irritated that I had planned ahead, and you just acted entitled.

SpringNowPlease2018 · 24/03/2018 22:09

OP it's not about paying extra

It's just that if you reserved H3 and it's on your ticket, you should have it?

ilovesooty · 24/03/2018 22:10

It doesn't matter whether you paid extra for a reservation. If you have a ticket with the number on it it's your seat unless it's announced that reservations for that train are suspended.

ConstantReminder · 24/03/2018 22:10

Some have electronic identification, not paper tickets. A reservation ticket is a way of assigning that seat to you. People reserve to travel trouble free. If someone had a reservation ticket, I’d move without question.

eggsandchips · 24/03/2018 22:10

Yes they can still be reserved if there isn't a ticket. If someone comes and has a ticket for that seat you'd be expected to shift.

UnimaginativeUsername · 24/03/2018 22:11

The fact is that the train reservations system in this country is often utterly shit. The train companies should do much better.

dramaqueen · 24/03/2018 22:12

If no reservations are showing then they are null & void. How can they be anything else? Not everyone reserves a seat so you can't possibly know where to sit. It's standard procedure.

And before someone says everyone should reserve a seat, season ticket holders are unable to on most lines.

TheRagingGirl · 24/03/2018 22:12

Reservations are advertised as free, but if I buy an Advance Ticket, I have to have a seat reservation. And I usually do by an Advance ticket + seat reservation so I can guarantee a seat (I'm usually working/travelling for work).

If I have a ticket with a specific seat in a specific carriage reserved, then I am fully justified in claiming that seat. No question.

Sparklesocks · 24/03/2018 22:22

Usually the driver will announce if reservations have been cancelled (whether it be due to delays etc)

If I had a reserved ticket and I hadn’t heard otherwise from the driver I would sit in that seat, it’s just easier than having a conversation with someone else who might say I’m in their seat if I pick one at random

theeyeofthestormchaser · 24/03/2018 22:24

Not all train companies put reserved signs out! If someone has a ticket for a seat, it’s theirs.

alligatortoss · 24/03/2018 22:31

Oh my days I don’t get why some people are getting so worked up over this? Grin

Well they should be able to reserve seats.

SootyandMathew · 24/03/2018 22:35

@alligatortoss you'd hate me.

Went into a nearly empty cinema and asked people to move out of my seats. Maybe the seat is close to the doors but not in a draft, maybe it's beside a window, maybe the person who asked you to move needs the sit they booked.

pigeondujour · 24/03/2018 22:38

I book a seat with specific conditions for a reason. Luckily most people aren't total arses and will move before I've even finished my first sentence; people that don't end up moving anyway but having been loudly embarrassed first.

Enuffsenuffsenuff · 24/03/2018 22:41

If their ticket says the seat is reserved then it's reserved even if the seat itself doesn't have a ticket on it (though understandably annoying for you!)

I would ask someone to move from my reserved seat even if others appeared to be free just because they might also be reserved further down the line.

Ariesgirl1988 · 24/03/2018 22:41

This is one of my pet hates! I always reserve a seat (and always pay for that reservation) and most of the time when I show my ticket people do apologise and move, but one time this guy sat in my seat and plugged his phone charger in (I specifically reserved a seat with a charger hence paying for it) when I politely said to him "excuse me you're sitting in my seat" and showed my ticket with the reservation and he actually tutted and said "why can't you sit opposite or next to me" really rude so I raised my voice slightly and said "I paid for that seat so I could plug MY phone in so no I'm not gonna sit elsewhere!" he moved and sat opposite me the whole journey throwing me dirty looks! I mean really if you wanted a plug socket that badly then pay and reserve a seat with one it's not that big an extra cost and don't get rude when you're asked to move Hmm

Sparklesocks · 24/03/2018 22:46

Also some people gave special requirements for booking a seat (like being near a toilet etc) which might not be immediately obvious.

crunchymint · 24/03/2018 22:46

When reservations are not showing on the train, reservations are null and void.

MissClareRemembers · 24/03/2018 22:50

This reminds of the time I took DCs to a kids screening at the cinema. chose good seats when buying the tickets and the found our seats (and whole row in fact) occupied by an entire family. I did the whole “oh terribly sorry but you appear to be in our seats” spiel but the mum just glared at me and said “you just sit where you like in the kids screenings”.

Curse my up assertive self for just rolling over.

Reservation ticket on seat or not, the seat was reserved.
