... to think this is unusual?

A family who live near me have gone away for a couple of weeks and I've noticed they've left their dogs in their house. They are being walked daily as far as I can tell. Do other dog owners do this when they go away? I always send mine to family or friends or kennels when we go away.

I wouldn't do it, dogs need companionship and to be let outside regularly, not just to be fed and walked.

Are you sure there isn't someone house sitting?

Agree it's very unusual to leave dogs alone for a prolonged period even if someone is calling in to walk them

I don't think anyone is house sitting. I suppose they might well be.

A neighbor used to do this, but someone was staying in the house each night, as well as walking them during the day. To be honest, they probably got more companionship that way than when the owners were at home as they work full time so the dogs are usually home alone anyway

No I’d never do that it’s cruel, idiots

My neighbours did this recently. Someone came in once a day to feed the dog then left again so it was on its own most of the time. It was horrible and the dog made an awful noise, crying every time the visitor left it.

Not sure if it's unusual or not, RSPCA weren't concerned as the dog had shelter and was being fed, but it's not something I'd willingly plan to do to my own dog.

I think you need to be sure of the situation. Are these dogs well cared for and loved? If so it's very unlikely they have left their dogs alone and it's probable someone is dog sitting, if they are not well loved and cared for, there is cause for concern. Call the rspca.

If its the former, these are well loved and cared for pets, I would have a deep look at myself if I was you.
