And have you ever thought about teaching a different year group? What you like about your year group? And have you taught other year groups? I teach year 3.

I started in reception... then I taught y3 for two years then then y5 for 3 and y6 for 2. I like them all, I dislike SATs, think I enjoy y5 the most.

TodUk · 24/03/2018 19:33

I taught yr 3, yr 4, reception, yr 2, yr 1, yr 5 in that order before leaving mainstream. I loved having a variety. I think it's important to move around so you know where the children are coming from and heading towards. I'm sure there wasn't as much sticking to the same age forever when I was newer to teaching.

mummymathsteacher · 24/03/2018 19:35

I've taught all of KS2 plus Year 2, but have spent most of my career in Year 6. I absolutely love Year 6 despite SATS. At some point, I'd like to try secondary too

roundtable · 24/03/2018 19:37

Every year from nursery to year 6. I personally think you need to see where they start from and where they need to be to get experience/ perspective on your teaching imo.

PoptartPoptart · 24/03/2018 19:37

I’m a TA and currently support in yr6.
I dislike Reception/infants but enjoy yr3 upwards.
I suppose if I had to choose I’d say Yr5 is my favourite year group. The work is more interesting and the children can be really good conversationalists, but with none of the SATS pressures of yr6.
Although, having said that, I do enjoy helping the yr6’s prepare for secondary school and supporting their transition.

BlondeB83 · 24/03/2018 19:38

6,5,4,2 and now Year 1!

MissClarke86 · 24/03/2018 19:39

Year 2, and I’ve only ever taught year 1 and 2.

I wouldn’t want to move purely because I have such a wealth of experience and resources in this year group now that it would add significantly to my workload to start afresh in an unfamiliar year group. If that wasn’t an issue, I’d happily move up (but not into FS)

yellowpaper · 24/03/2018 19:41

Year 9 10 and 11

PumpkinPie2016 · 24/03/2018 19:46

Years 7-13. I love teaching secondary and having such a variety, even though the pressure is huge with exam classes.

Don't think I could do primary - I can just about hope with the neediness of Y7 so don't think I would have the patience for such young children.

Sophiecatteacher · 24/03/2018 19:48

@Pumpkinpie2016

That is the same with me. I teach yr 3 but don't think I could cope with ks1.

7 to 13. I think people who teach primary must have the patience of saints!

rainbowfudgee · 24/03/2018 19:51

Ks1 is awesome. I do ppa cover around my school and like year 2 the most.

pudcat · 24/03/2018 19:59

I started teaching many years ago teaching 2nd year juniors now known as Y4. Have taught all K1 and 2. My last 5 years were spent as Nursery teacher and early years leader. These were the happiest days of my teaching career.

WombatStewForTea · 25/03/2018 11:07

Currently mixed 5/6 which I don't like. Love 5 and 6 separately but mixed feel like I don't do either properly!
Have taught all of KS2 including other mixed classes. Quite fancy KS1 but not sure about EYFS

NorthernKnickers · 25/03/2018 11:22

Taught all year groups from nursery to Y6. Loved nursery, wasn't keen on Year 1 (only did that for a year, asked to move). Loved Year 2 but hated the pressure to get them working at 'SATS level', equally loved the children in 6, but again, the joy has been sucked right out with current SATS pressures. Currently in Year 3 and love it too 😂 I'd say the only actual year group I really, truly didn't like teaching was Year 1. I'd never, ever advocate sticking rigidly to teaching one phase for your entire career...I know some teachers of 20 years or more who have only ever taught one year group. They are not the best teachers and have little idea (or curiosity even!) about where children have either come from or are heading towards. I also believe that all teachers should spend at least some time in early years, to see just how hard teachers work down there, and to watch the transformation that happens between entering and leaving EYFS. It's simply phenomenal.
