MY dopey mate and her cross breed dog

My mate bought a puppy last year and boasted about how she'd got a pedigree German shepherd for £25. I'm a dog enthusiast and could tell straight away that it wasn't a pure GS but I assumed as it grew up she'd realise this. She didn't. Instead she continuously posted pictures on Facebook and when people commented stuff like "he'd lovely Hun, what breeds are in him?" She would reply "he's purebred German shepherd Hun" etc! She was making herself look stupid it was so frustrating. Once a bloke commented "doesn't look purebred to me, got some Doberman in him maybe?" And she got all defensive and told him it was pedigree with unusual markings. He didn't respond.

She then came to me and said "did you see what that arsehole put on Facebook making out that the dog is cross!? So jealous!". I took the bait and said "well he's obviously got a lot of German shepherd in him hasn't he? He's close enough!" And fussed the dog. I tried to keep it light but she got snappy and said "he's pedigree, I saw both his parents!". Anyway I let it go but now she's talking about offering him up as stud at £200 a time. The dog is clearly a cross breed but she's advertising him as pedigree with no papers. It's false advertising for a start and a potential breeder will take one look at him and rip her to shreds, especially if they have travelled a long way. How do I get it through to her???!

most 'pedigrees' that are popular now, aren't pedigrees anyway they are cockapoos or puggles.

A cockapoo and puggle (my brain just exploded having to type those words) will never be a 'pedigree'. A pedigreed dog is one which has papers produced with the registering body (such as the Kennel Club) which outlines their lineage. A cross-bred dog will never have a legitimate pedigree.

Pedigree seems just a way for posh twonks to justify their own in breeding. A good old mongrel any day, bags of character and individuality.

Even if she is offering her dog as a stud for payment, surely anyone with a degree of common sense will

A - see straight away that it’s not a pure breed

And

B - want to see the dogs breeding papers

As advised you’ve given your opinion, as have others but she’s chosen not to listen. Is it really such a big deal?

Lovesagin · 25/03/2018 11:03

Why not stamp your feet and shout "listen to meeeeee and my very important opinion"?

RachelTeeth · 25/03/2018 11:19

She sounds like she is of very low intellect and wants to add to the dogs getting killed every day across the country? Nice, good choice of friend. Report her income from backyard breeding to HMRC.

DietCokeGirrrrrl · 25/03/2018 11:23

If anyone is stupid enough to pay £200 for their dog to breed with a stud that has no papers and doesn't even look pure bred, let them.

That said she is unreasonable to be contributing to purebred breeding. There are too many puppies bred as it is!

Crossbreeds can very easily have genetically inherited conditions. I look after other people's dogs, amongst many others we have an adorable mongrel who came from Cyprus. DNA testing shows half Golden Retriever and another quarter Labrador with the rest being too jumbled to make any sense. She's already got symptoms of hip dysplasia and arthritis and she's still only 18 months.

@GiddyGardner The French Bulldogs are sadly as likely as the English to having breathing problems thanks to the pressure on breeders to produce as 'squashed' a nose/muzzle as possible to conform with breed standards. For which the Kennel Club are as much to blame as anyone else.

LEMtheoriginal · 25/03/2018 18:58

If the dog is healthy and well cared for it shouldn't matter. However my concern is that she would clearly only get unscrupulous "breeders" wanting to use as stud dog.

I would focus on persuading her to get her dog neutered and explain the risks of not doing so

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 25/03/2018 19:01

I doubt anything you say will get through to her as tbh, anyone stupid enough to think you'd get a 'purebreed' GSD for £25 Is beyond help...
I also wouldn't worry about a disgruntled breeder as they'll ask to see pictures of the dog well before they travel anywhere.

Lizzie48 · 25/03/2018 19:40

My DSis's Labrador Retriever turned out to be a hermaphrodite, neither male nor female. She was sold to my DSis as a bitch, she took her to be neutered and it turned out that she had no womb and an undeveloped testicle. I don't know whether her being a cross breed had anything to do with this anomaly.

MidniteScribbler · 25/03/2018 20:25

There is no such thing as 'hybrid vigour' when it comes to dog breeding. Basic genetics show that breeding any two dogs who have not been health tested for genetic diseases is going to give you more likely hood of producing puppies with those diseases. That applies to cross bred and purebred animals. The only way to reduce the potential for such diseases is by using breeding stock that is healthy and has been screened for genetic diseases. A good, reputable breeder is doing that on their animals, and that is mostly pedigree breeders, although there are quite a lot of the working stock breeders in Australia also testing their dogs. The average 'whatever doodle' is not being tested, and therefore has a higher chance of passing on the inheritable conditions carried by both of their parent breeds.

isn't a puggle a puddle??

IMightMentionGriddlebone · 25/03/2018 20:42

Puggle? Pug-beagle cross?

Ariesgirl1988 · 25/03/2018 20:56

I agree with previous posters you've tried to tell her she don't want to listen to leave her to it I'm sure any responsible registered breeder will put her straight! I'm a bit disturbed by the breeding him for £200 its a dog not a cash cow Hmm

Trinity66 · 25/03/2018 20:59

I doubt anyone would pay £200 to breed with a dg that doesn't have papers anyway
