... you should try to arrange your doctors' appointments for the days you don't work, and not for 2 p.m. on a day that you do?

OP posts:
Astrid2 · 23/03/2018 17:55

There might not be any available on the days off though or they could have prior arrangements?

VanillaPriscilla · 23/03/2018 17:55

I agree but lots of part timers are carers too

Sirzy · 23/03/2018 17:55

Sometimes appointments you take what you are given

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 23/03/2018 17:56

I would say yanbu but it can be difficult to get a doctors appointment.

inamechangedforthispost · 23/03/2018 17:56

It is increasingly difficult to pick and choose when you see a doctor, you usually have to take whatever appointment they may have.

Even if it wasn't difficult, unless you know what the problem is then you will have no idea how urgent it is.

kitchensinkmum · 23/03/2018 17:56

Drs appointments aren't that easy to arrange, sometimes I think take what's available

OddestSock · 23/03/2018 17:57

I’d probably try & switch my work day if tha was the case.
Though when I was pregnant with DD2, I worked wedsneday - Saturday. My midwife appointments had to be wednesdays as that was the day the community midwife was at the surgery.
I’d often go into work for half an hour, then leave for my appointment & come back in again afterwards (I’d not take a lunch break on those days)

Grimbles · 23/03/2018 17:57

You can try, sure. But if they aren't available you have to take what is.

Vanillaradio · 23/03/2018 17:57

Depends. First of all some doctors apps are when they are, and also they may have other commitments such as childcare on non working days, not fun dragging small dcs to medical apps.

ReinettePompadour · 23/03/2018 17:58

When did you last try and get an appointment at your doctors? Last time I tried (last week) I could have either an appointment in 10 minutes time (I live 20 minute drive on a good day) , or on 13th April.

I cannot tell them when I want my appointment. They tell me when they can fit me in.

SarahSiddons · 23/03/2018 17:58

I work 4 days a week and I try to schedule doctors appointments for my day off (meaning I have to take my preschooler with me) but I have an appointment next week on a working day because I have to see a particular doctor who fits mirenas. It’s not always possible to arrange appointments outside work time even though I try to.

Catsandkids78 · 23/03/2018 17:58

When I see my consultant I have no control of when I have an appointment at all - get what you are given

ScreamingValenta · 23/03/2018 17:58

The key word here is try. Yes, you should try to arrange them outside your working hours - YANBU - but it has to be accepted that this might not always be possible, especially if it's an urgent appointment.

PragmaticWench · 23/03/2018 17:59

By that logic, if you work full time then you should try to arrange your doctors appointments for when you're not in work?

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 23/03/2018 18:00

Have you tried to get a Drs appointment recently?
Yes of course you'd attempt one on your days off but if it's not possible you just take what's on offer.

S0ph1a · 23/03/2018 18:00

Consultants run clinics on set days. Usually patients get no choice.

I take it you are not familiar with the NHS OP?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 23/03/2018 18:02

In an ideal world yes but these days you take what you get offered.

Enidblyton1 · 23/03/2018 18:06

YABU, at my doctors you take what you're given. Waiting for a particular day might mean waiting a few weeks for an appointment.

Answeringwhyquestionssince2002 · 23/03/2018 18:09

I'm sure my childminding clients were of the same opinion as the OP when I was pregnant with 2nd DC and minding 3 days a week. The only midwife appointments available were in the middle of one of my minding days because that was the day the community midwife visited the surgery, and the hospital refused to let me have my appointments there because of some technicality (ie I lived in a different county to the hospital)

I remember crying on the nurse's shoulder after the consultant had brusquely delivered this news before rushing off to his next patient. I either had to drag three under 5s along to every appointment or expect the clients to make alternative childcare arrangements every time I had to visit the surgery.

DozyDoates · 23/03/2018 18:14

I didn't really fancy taking my my 4yo and 1yo DC along to my smear test so yes, I took an appointment on a work day. But where possible I do try try to do my "life admin" on the days I'm not in work (hardly "days off").

pigeondujour · 23/03/2018 18:17

If I wake up with cystitis (I do, relatively frequently) I'd happily take an appointment at 2pm on the moon if I thought it was the fastest route to feeling better.

teaiseverything · 23/03/2018 18:18

In an ideal world yes but these days, it's easier to get a bloody face to face with Beyonce than it is a GP appointment. A good GP. We all know there are awful ones in each practice and it's pretty much pointless seeing them because you come out not having been listened to or helped properly meaning you need to go back anyway.

Part timers are generally part time for personal reasons, one of which might be health conditions that only leave them with the energy to do part time hours. Their conditions need managed and flare up so unfortunately they need to take appointments when they can get them. Same with urgent concerns for just the average Joe part time worker.

gamerchick · 23/03/2018 18:21

Lucky to get an appointment at all any time soon where I go. It’s get what you’re given in 6 weeks time!

Quartz2208 · 23/03/2018 18:29

My surgery is small and has set times for set things, so runs a blood test cl8nic one day, nurses are in set days and there are two part time doctors so if I want to see my one it’s set days and I take what is given

Ragwort · 23/03/2018 18:32

I agree you should try to arrange them outside work hours, I work p/t and I always make appointments outside my working hours - but I am lucky enough to have a very flexible job so if I need to disappear to an appointment I can just work the hours another time. Not everyone has that flexibility.
