I've recently found a new love of birds. I've bought some feeders and have really enjoyed seeing the different types of birds coming to eat. So aibu to ask you to tell me what birds you've seen visiting your garden and what you like about them so I can look out for them in mine?

This is a great thread. I have all the usual garden birds mentioned already and this year we put out two next boxes and a blue tit has been eyeing it up this year and going inside.

I also hung my daughter's cut hair and the dog's fur inside a peanut feeder for them to take for bedding.

I put out suet pellets, mealworms for the blackbirds and hedgehogs (should be coming out soon), sunflower hearts, non-mess bird food, whole peanuts and chopped up peanuts that I whizz in the blender.

I spend a fortune on the wildlife in my garden!

BabloHoney · 23/03/2018 20:09

Starlings, blackbirds, sparrows, wrens, wagtails, magpies, jays, bluetits, chaffinch, pigeons, robins, I’ve seen a heron once. We also have a kestrel who lands on our balcony occasionally, we’re opposite a field so he hovers there looking for mice for lunch!

HeyhoIndigo · 23/03/2018 20:11

The recent snow brought with it a blooming ROOK !

It was hacking lumps off the suet candle. It was way bigger than the jackdaw and similar size to the crow we get. It has the sort of long beak and hungry face that makes you take care not to slip over in the snow. It was not in the least bothered that I was standing a short distance away filling a seed feeder. It's been back every day since. I might be slightly scared of it.

We get lots of the birds on these lists. Not had a woodpecker for a while but used to. Once had a green woodpecker teaching her baby how to pull ants out of the lawn. Occasionally redwings, fieldfare, bullfinch. Have had ducks but not for some years.

Long tail tits ( flying teaspoons ) visit daily at the moment.

Peachyking000 · 23/03/2018 20:20

Wee yellow and black ones, and the odd robin redbreast. Unfortunately our cats keep catching them Sad

ineedwine99 · 23/03/2018 20:22

Oh yeah coal tit and a couof owls nearby, barn and tawny

ineedwine99 · 23/03/2018 20:24

House Martins on my house, on the neighbors there are swifts and swallows

Schroedingerscatagain · 23/03/2018 20:24

This is a lovely thread, I too am a secret twitcher with my binoculars always ready

I have resident pigeons Bob and a Betty who’ve been here about 4 years

Blackbirds
Jackdaw
Crow
Bluetits
Coal tits
Long tail tits
Dunnocks
Robins
The goldfinch gang
Great tits
A hobby comes occasionally
Collared doves
Sparrows
Starlings

My pigeon Bob is really not very bright but quite comedic and has poked himself on the pointy top of the feeding station so many times it’s become a family joke

We even put food in a lower ground level basket for him as he can’t fathom how to get at the fat balls or seed up high for the others

DesperateforSPRING · 23/03/2018 20:25

Wood pigeon
Rarely collard dove
Robin
Blue, yellow tits
Gold finch
Sparrows
Thrush
Black birds
Magpies

girlandboy · 23/03/2018 20:33

How nice!!

We have the usual birds that most people get ie sparrows, blackbirds etc. But I was very pleased to see a beautiful pair of Bullfinches last week, a whole bunch of Long-tailed Tits and I had to get the birdbook out to identify a Fieldfare this week! He ate a whole apple that was still hanging on the tree!

But we also regularly get a Buzzard sitting on the garage roof, and the Tawny owl is very vocal at night!

I love the birds 😊

plominoagain · 23/03/2018 20:34

We get :

rooks
crows
jackdaws
jays
magpies
chaffinches ,
Wrens
Coal , blue and great tits
The odd sparrow
Sparrow hawks
Kestrels
Blackbirds
Starlings by the bazillion
Likewise wood pigeons and pheasants

Also have little owls that sit on my fence at night , a pair of tawnys that live in our willows , and a breeding pair of barn owls that we put a box up for , and which have now put our field shelter out of bounds as they’re protected . And one year in our hedge we had this

HighwayDragon1 · 23/03/2018 20:35

Red Kites
Magpies
Rooks

Basically birds that aren't scared of the cat. Other birds are often dead Sad

inkandstone · 23/03/2018 20:46

Seagulls. They knock on the back door and come in the kitchen if we leave it open.

BabloHoney · 23/03/2018 20:50

plominoagain that photo is awesome, what a lovely little chap!

MrsPreston11 · 23/03/2018 21:05

Great and Blue tits.
A nuthatch
LS woodpeckers
Magpies and pigeons who knacker the feeder
Jay

Very noisy parakeets who stay up high in the trees.

And my favourite a really tame robin who will come and sit near us anytime we’re in the garden. Wants to be our friend I’m sure.

MrsPreston11 · 23/03/2018 21:05

Oh and tawny owls. Have never seen them but boy do we hear them!

ineedwine99 · 23/03/2018 21:06

@plominoagaini am SO jealous! What a lovely photo

FloControl · 23/03/2018 21:09

I work in a largely outdoor occupation at an airport. However, our inside workplace has at least one resident robin. I expect there is a pair but it's not easy to tell. Becoming more bold, if not tame, with every day. In another building (which I don't use) are several nesting feral pigeons. The spikes are absolutely no deterrent !

Uniglo18 · 23/03/2018 21:15

Wood pigeons
Robins
Normal pigeons
Thrush
Blackbirds
Starlings
Wagtail

At the moment mostly a male pheasant, a robin and magpies. In summer swallows, sparrows, curlews, and owls.
