'Woke' meNs? I googled it and I'm still none the wiser. It seems to be in relation to births or something?

I'm with you, not a clue! Will be interesting to see if someone knows. Tbf, Mumsnet has taught me a hell of a lot!

Nothing to do with births Confused

It means you’re spending too much time reading nonsense online and need to get back to the real world!

IndianaMoleWoman · 23/03/2018 13:14

I think it means aware of and sensitive towards various issues to do with other people’s identities, eg avoiding cultural appropriation, accepting trans and non-binary identities, being aware that people of colour experience things differently because of the way they are perceived by white people etc.

I could be wrong, as my definition is mostly garnered from watching Grey’s Anatomy.

Knowing what’s going on in the community (related to racism and social injustice) - according to urban dictionary.

IndianaMoleWoman · 23/03/2018 13:17

Clearly I am not “woke” as I just read that back and realised I used the word “other” instead of “different”. As a white heterosexual woman, I presume that my identity is “the norm” and non-white, non-heterosexual people are “other”. Which is most definitely not “woke”.

That’s enough “” for one lifetime.

Ihatemyclients · 23/03/2018 13:23

It's an urban slang term which refers to being aware of issues of social justice and the way these impact on people's lives. It was born out of the Black Lives Matter movement as a way of expressing understanding of the why racial privilege and discrimination operate in the US. It has since broadened out into a wider term encompassing various different forms of oppression and discrimination.

If a person is described as 'woke' it means they are aware of these issues and understand their impact.

It is also used in memes in a more lighthearted sense where is can refer to any form of understanding, usually in an exaggerated or ridiculous context.

Ah there was a post about the OP not yet pregnant wanting a homebirth and her family gasped in horror at the idea. Some people responded this is proper woke bullshit.

I looked online as to what it meant, I got the same about BLM etc. I thought maybe there was a special MN version.
