Another is work being unreasonable

OK so basically I work shifts, 6-2 & 2-10. This week I'm on 2-10. I work in a factory as a general operator.

Yesterday I was going in late as wife had a hospital appointment (around 3:40 I arrived)

I decided to use the office car park as its closer to the entrance and most of the the office staff are off site by 6pm and there were at least 8 spaces. Parked up, clocked in and was told that I used used the "office staff car park" which to be fair is signposted when you enter work.

I though it was a bit pathetic and explained that more staff will be leaving than arriving at the time of day it was. I ended up moving the car after explaining...

Anyway Im just wondering if the whole scenario of having office staff carparks and "other vehicle" car park spaces is a little bit pathetic and unneccesary.

I'm confused as to why there is separate car parks unless the 'other staff' have huge big vehicles? Have you massively inconvenienced anyone?

Damonlufc88 · 23/03/2018 06:46

@shakeyourcaboose

Not really any huge vehicles no. You basic across the board variety of cars you would find on any car park.

The only reason I did is was because of the time of day (getting to home time for the office hours)

The person on reception couldn't wait to tell me which enough that it's "an office staff car park and I'm going have to move my car" I was laughing and I was in 2 minds to move it but wasn't after making a fuss

Do they lock the office staff car park after office hours? Do you have security on site? We have an ‘office’ car park and site car park because of the mess some of the non office vehicles can drag around with them.

Slartybartfast · 23/03/2018 06:49

Some people can be petty about certain things.
i guess if the boot was on the other foot how would you feel?

Damonlufc88 · 23/03/2018 06:54

@gizlotsmum

No their is no gate or and barrier that can block the cars in after a certain time.

What sort of mess would mine office vehicles bring?

@slartybartfast not that it botheres me I have no preference as to where other cars park

OP posts:
RadioGaGoo · 23/03/2018 06:57

That is rather pathetic.

LynetteScavo · 23/03/2018 06:58

Ah, but if they let you park there once they'll have to let everyone park there.

I'm guessing the receptionist was a bit bored.

RadioGaGoo · 23/03/2018 06:59

Well, let's hope the office staff never need to use the factory operators car park.

Gizlotsmum · 23/03/2018 07:00

@damonlufc88

For us the vans can bring sludge and cake and it stinks. ‘Office’ vehicles tend not to bring that with them and once it is on your shoes ( site personnel have work boots) it is really hard to get rid of.

Vans can be taken home so not just in site

topcat2014 · 23/03/2018 07:04

My guess is the 'office' car park always has spaces, whereas the 'factory' car park fills up sometimes?

Wherever I have worked (I am a finance director, in factories) I have always tried to get rid of un-needed 'them and us' divisions between office and shop floor, so to speak. They are very 'industrial revolution' and not really in keeping with best practice in modern team working.

Slartybartfast · 23/03/2018 07:07

when you start at 6 do you sneak in to the office car park?

Fosterdog123 · 23/03/2018 07:09

Is the office workers car park closer to the factory than 'your' car park?

NapQueen · 23/03/2018 07:11

"Show me the policy on that"

shakeyourcaboose · 23/03/2018 07:13

I can't imagine a reason other than your vehicles are dragging in all sorts that their needs to be a split, sounds like you are in your own car anyway? Receptionist sounds like an arse unless they actually have the car park monitor role!

Rejoiner · 23/03/2018 07:15

If there is no reason for the 2 car parks except to separate the workers then YANBU

In our place we have two, the one at the front by the main entrance is used by the people who unlock/lock up (factory) and the sales/office team who frankly can’t park so is always a mess and you have to move your car or get someone to move if you need to pop out.

The other one is by goods in and used by the factory teams,, there is a system for parking that everyone follows we fit in more cars than spaces and rarely have to move. Myself and 2 other senior managers choose to use this one and walk through the factory/building to our desks as we can’t deal with the ridiculousness of our allocated car park.

AnoiaUnstickMyDrawers · 23/03/2018 07:19

I work in a factory. There are two car parks. Anyone can park in either. The only restricted spaces are visitors spaces.

I assume the office car park is closer to the entrance, which is why you used it.
What reason is there for office workers to need to park closer than the factory workers? I can't think of any....

I think I would want to see an official policy and explanation, it seems to be unnecessarily divisive.

IMO those leaving and arriving in the cold and dark, especially this time of year, are more deserving of a closer space.

insancerre · 23/03/2018 07:19

It's a system designed to keep the factory worked in their place and gives the office workers an over inflated sense of their own importance

AnoiaUnstickMyDrawers · 23/03/2018 07:22

Agreed insancerre I would be interested to see how big a hole they would dig trying to justify it.

I have worked in both factory and office based positions at my work. The judgement and superiority from some is staggering.

trinitybleu · 23/03/2018 07:25

There's clearly reasons for the 2 car parks and that might just be hierarchical, but still. The Receptionist has been told these people park in car park A and these people in B - if she doesn't enforce that, she's not doing her job. You should have spoken to her the day before and asked if you could use a space in the office staff car park.

I can't understand why you'd want to park in the "wrong" car park anyway. There were spaces in the other one? Is it much closer?

Damonlufc88 · 23/03/2018 07:27

@slartybartfast I can't sneak on at 6sm because it's full of night shift factory workers on there 😂 (failed to bring this up yesterday as I was caught unawares)

@gizlotsmum Their is a separate entrance for goods in/out that any deliveries must report through, not coming into contact with the entrance that anybody in the workforce use.

I totally understand if it was a visitors car park. I mean best Impressions for new customers or visitors, I totally get that but their is absolutely no need, from what me or my colleagues were saying yesterday, to have an office car park and I just though I would post on here to see what an outside point of view would be

Proletariat springs to mind - segregation of the workers from the clerical staff
Pretty appalling if you ask me

Damonlufc88 · 23/03/2018 07:31

@trinitybleu
As stated above I parked there because it was closer to the door.
I was already late due to hospital appointment
It was half empty on the "wrong car park due to the time of day and it was only going to get more empty.
It was raining.
It isnt much closer no, I would say about 100 meters.

OP posts:
Slartybartfast · 23/03/2018 07:36

so the night shift factory workers park in the office car park?

Damonlufc88 · 23/03/2018 07:45

@slartybartfast yeah. Nobody operates the car parking system at all any time. Their is one main barrier that let's you onto the works site then it's all open. I assume when I rang the bell to open the barrier she watched me drive on site and park on the "office staff" car park and then questioned me when I clocked in.

Last night leaving at 10 the smaller office car park was full of night shift cars.
