Would you send him into school or follow procedures?

My son regularly wakes up and vomits once then is fine. No reason why this happens but our GP thinks it's related to his asthma. My AIBU is I've kept him off school whenever this happens in the past for the required 48 hours but I don't know if I am doing the right thing because as I mentioned before he vomits once and then is back to himself and eating and bouncing around so you can imagine I'm thinking there is no reason why he can't be in school. Can I ask what would you do? Would you send him in or just keep him off every time this happens? Thanks

I would send him in. My son gets the same when over tired. Sick once after a morning of lethargy then springs back to normal after sleep!

Cantchooseaname · 22/03/2018 18:42

From the other side- at my school a child has to have 2 ‘episodes’ of d and/ or v to be sent home... 🙄. So once we would not consider it to def be a bug.

Fruitcorner123 · 22/03/2018 18:42

Yes i would send him in. Your doctor has given a probable diagnosis and its not a bug. Keeping him off is like a pregnant woman having time off work every time she is sick in the morning just in case it's a bug.

MrsHathaway · 22/03/2018 18:43

So he's just coughing and bringing up whatever's in the way?

I agree that he probably doesn't need to be off, because he isn't ill and he isn't contagious either.

BUT

The one time you send him in will be the one time he actually does have a sick bug. So I think you probably have to think about stocking up on workbooks and interesting reading material. And if it's becoming frequent, schedule an asthma review with the GP/nurse.

That's exactly what ds goes through he's lethargic then vomits and is fine again. When he was in play school I'd take him out but now he's in main stream school I'm struggling with him missing so much

Send him in. Stupidly I followed ds1's school policy and kept him off after a night of d&v- he is not not allowed on a trip coming up to reward attendance. When schools penalise dc for their parents adhering to school policy it does make it harder to be supportive...

Jamiefraserskilt · 22/03/2018 18:44

Some kids build up mucus in their tummies, vomit it up then are fine. Mine was. I told the school this happens and if it happened at school to send him to the Bathroom and if we was still green after throwing up, call me. It took a couple of incidents and some reiteration before they were ok with it but they got it in the end. He would vom once then be fine, colour back, bouncing about. No bug, just snot.

  • now not allowed
upsideup · 22/03/2018 18:52

My DS(8) has been known to be sick after hes tried food he doesnt like, I always send him in the next day as it would be absolutely ridiculous to let him have two days of school when hes absolutely fine.
So no YANBU, its your call.

Smilingthru · 22/03/2018 18:57

If your certain it’s not a big I’d send him in. DD has a bowel issue meaning she has dioreah and nursery policy is to send them home. I just got a GP letter confirming condition and that it’s not contagious etc etc. It’s kept on file and they’ve never sent her home as a result. Could try that too?

FittonTower · 22/03/2018 18:58

My son has asthma and he does the same thing, he will wake up and vomit, go back to sleep once ive cleaned and calmed him down and he's fine the next day. I never keep him home. The one time he did actually have a sickness bug it was obvious it was something different and i kept him home then.

Glumglowworm · 22/03/2018 19:01

When I’ve worked at scout jamborees the rule has often been kids get sent off site after two unexplained incidents of d or v. So your DS would be fine because a) it is explained and b) only one incidence

I would just watch him really carefully for any other signs of illness and if there is then don’t sent him in.

PuppyMonkey · 22/03/2018 19:01

Sinceyouask - in your case, that wasn’t stupid though, if he had d&v. Confused

Not what op is describing.

MrsHathaway · 22/03/2018 19:04

It is stupid to value presenteeism over infection control.

DarkDarkNight · 22/03/2018 19:16

I would send him in, it's not a virus or bug but related to another health condition.

sinceyouask · 22/03/2018 19:24

@PuppyMonkey you're right. I'm just fed up and frustrated with all things school at so I'm venting.
