I'm posting for traffic really - of course I know HOW to cook a jacket potato.....!

But tonight I will need to be out the house for over 2 hours and I need them to be ready when we all get in (parents evening!)

I only have my oven - please don't say microwave [bleugh!!!!!] What temperature do you think I could put them on in the oven and go out for a couple of hours and them be ready when I get home but not totally burned to a crisp?

Use the timer on your oven?

MrsJayy · 22/03/2018 15:47

Put them in low maybe 120 put them in tin foil they should be fine for when you get back OR microwave them now and shove them in the oven to crisp up for twenty minutes when you get back they are not bleurgh that way honestly.

TeenTimesTwo · 22/03/2018 15:47

Or failing that, put them in a cold oven at 160 Fan just as you leave the house.

kubex · 22/03/2018 15:48

I rub the skins in a little olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper, wrap in foil and pop in the oven at 150 degrees for 2-3 hours.

Delicious!

BeyondThePage · 22/03/2018 15:51

We have a timer - can set start time, and end time or duration, soooo easy... doesn't help if your oven doesn't though... sorry.

PotteringAlong · 22/03/2018 15:54

You can do them in the slow cooker if you have one?

IWantMyHatBack · 22/03/2018 15:55

Shove them in with a metal skewer through them, it'll help them cook through on the lower temp (apparently)

About 140°C, I reckon. You could always coat them in foil but just take it off when you get home, then put the oven on high for 10 mins to crisp them up a bit

reallyanotherone · 22/03/2018 15:56

I agree 140 for a couple of hours, maybe turn the hear up when you get in for crispy skin.

Slow cooker would work (and i’d be less worried about leaving it on for seceral hours unattended) too.

chloesmumtoo · 22/03/2018 16:00

I just put them in oven at 200 degrees Confused (I seem to use higher temperature than everyone else!) for between 1hr 15mins - 1hr 30mins depending on size. We usually have huge ones Grin

Sweetheart · 22/03/2018 16:03

Chloe - think you've missed the point of the thread Confused

So what's with the tin foil? Does it stop them burning? Will they crisp up with foil on?

I'll try the metal skewer thanks Grin

Yeah foil and lower temperature good idea, I missed the bit about being out for 2 hrs

EnglishRose13 · 22/03/2018 16:05

Slow cooker definitely. Best potatoes ever.

Sweetheart · 22/03/2018 16:13

I don't own a slow cooker - am I now banished from mumsnet? Grin

So much 'snobbery' about microwaving. Put each one in the microwave for 6 - 7 minutes, then into a hot oven at 200c for 30 minutes.
Saves time and money!
You'd never know the difference either.

beargryllshasabigrope · 22/03/2018 16:17

I've never understood why people use tin foil on jacket potatoes either....

Anyway, just shove them in on about 160 for the two hours, that should be fine

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 22/03/2018 16:19

Sorry but microwaved jacket potatoes are totally different and putting them in the oven to finish off does not help matters. Oven or bust

TheViceOfReason · 22/03/2018 16:19

Microwave them, then give them a few minutes under the grill with a little oil and salt on the skin to crisp up. Works an absolute treat.

You're welcome.

TartanDr3ams · 22/03/2018 16:22

Do what others have said about the low oven and foil.. then when you come home unfoil them and if the skins not quite crispy whack the oven up full for 15mins while you sort your toppings.

BumpowderSneezeonAndSnot · 22/03/2018 16:23

Prick the skin
Put in the microwave for 10 mins for a fluffy centre
Bake in the oven for 20 mins to get a crispy skin

Sweetheart · 22/03/2018 16:24

High five IMBBT Grin I agree - oven or bust!

OP posts:
HobnobBob · 22/03/2018 16:25

If you slow cook them surely they don’t have that lovely crispy skin? I’ve never tried it y’see.

Oysterbabe · 22/03/2018 16:25

The microwave is fine providing they get a good blast in the oven to crisp them after.
