I have never known of a rescue that doesn't homecheck

Smaller, independent rescues can be more flexible with their rules and won't always require a home check, provided they think you're a capable owner who lives in appropriate accommodation (ie. you either own, or have a letter from your LL allowing you to have pets).

Why don’t you tell us what county you live in? There may be posters that know of cats that need a home. I personally know of a wee dog that needs a home and, as a dog sitter, am often asked to find homes for dogs.

Check with vets as ours quite often has posters up, looking for homes.

PositivelyPERF · 22/03/2018 09:44

Also check with pet supply shops, such as pets at home and join some cat lovers Facebook sites.

Contact Rushden Persian Rescue in Northants ( not just Persians) there are some lovely cats there. Of course they will do a home check. You can look at their fb page too.

Cats Protection don’t do home visits anymore. They used to but changed their policy last year. I’m not sure why, not enough resources maybe?

OP - contact your local Cats Protection shelter and let them know you are looking for a house cat. They have the odd one come in for rehoming, but as advised, if you rent then you will need a letter from your LL giving you permission for a cat.

I wouldn’t consider taking in a cat that’s been used to getting outside if you intend to keep them inside (which sounds like the sensible option if you live near a road). There’s a good chance they won’t settle and will be unhappy.

Vinorosso74 · 22/03/2018 09:50

Yep it is a resource issue with CP. They check your home on Google street view to check if you're on a main road/by a railway line etc but still go through all the stuff they would do at a home visit.

ShotsFired · 22/03/2018 09:50

@19lottie82 I think that must be regional/resource thing as my one certainly does - they are looking for new home visitors at this very moment.

I would expect any reputable place to do that tbh. I get so angry at people flogging their pets on Facebook etc - one woman recently said she'd "try" and ensure her cats new home was ok. TRY?!?! Angry

I am in the west midlands

How secure is your tenancy, OP? If you're just on a standard AST and could be given 2 months' notice to quit, you might find it quite hard to find a new home with a cat. You don't want to find you have to rehome the poor thing.

Sorry, not trying to be negative at all, just wanted to raise the idea as part of the things you need to consider.

gussyfinknottle · 22/03/2018 10:04

We live on a busy road. We told the RSPCA that we would never let her out front. RSPCA person told us to put the cat basket by the back of our car and Rev the car so she'd associate the noise with "let's skedaddle".
I have never done this because I have always kept her as an indoor cat. With loads of places to do cat stuff about the little house : perch, roost, climb, scratch etc. We play with her loads and her litter tray is in our bathroom. She had never shown any interest in going out and prefers to watch and plot . And sleep. And play. And sleep.
Hunt. Catch. Kill. Eat. Groom. Sleep. She can do all of this in order and out of order as suits.

19lottie82 · 22/03/2018 10:06

shots could be shelter specific I suppose? I adopted a cat from the Glasgow branch last month and they told me they no longer did home visits, which I found quite surprising!

19lottie82 · 22/03/2018 10:08

I wish there was centres where you could
look at the cats available instead

You can at the cats protection?

Highpeak · 22/03/2018 11:02

Our kitten came from a local rescue in the North west that didn't home check or ask about residential status (we were renting at the time)

NFATR · 22/03/2018 11:05

I think its madness that they are so strict while cats are being put down all over the country.
We just turned up at the local cat charities open day, picked a kitten, filled in a form and took him home, after we gave them 30 quid. That's it.

Why is it so hard in other places?
