To think this is at least a 'lightly active' job?

Dp and I were having a discussion the other day about food and calories as I am trying to lose weight.

I feel that I should allow for the fact I have a fairly active job that involves being on my feet and walking around between 8-12 hrs a day. Only occasional heavy lifting but it can be very fast paced and busy.

Dp doesn't think this is an 'active job' - I admit his is as it involves similar periods of standing/walking but does involves frequent heavy lifting and is always busy.

Aibu to think my job would be considered at least 'lightly active'? Ok, I'm not running marathons every day but I'm not sat at a desk either. Who is right?

You are right. If you are on your feet more or less all day then your job isn't sedentary or inactive.

yep, i sit at a desk all day, yours is definitely atleast lightly active, probably more if you're walking around all day

I haven't exactly worked out the number of calories I 'need' as tbh working out the calorie content of every single thing that passes my lips is a bit soul destroying and puts me off eating at all! But I am trying to make better choices and generally keeping an eye on what I consume a lot more.

Its just that I've been doing this since the beginning of the week (not long I know!) in conjunction with going to the gym and I'm finding I am SO much hungrier than I thought I would be. Not peckish or wanting to snack but actually, stomach rumbling, shaking kind of hunger. Dp says this is just me adjusting and I have to get used to being hungry, which I totally get to a point but this is 'real' hunger rather than just wanting to eat for the sake of it.

For example, today I did half an hour of yoga at home, then had porridge and a coffee. Then at work I had a herbal tea and a cuppa soup thing. I thought this would be enough to see me through till dinnertime.

Went to work for 4 hrs or so, then went to the gym for an hour in my break and I was so hungry I felt faint, sick and was shaking. I didn't even push myself especially hard because I know I have to go back to work shortly and I don't want to overdo it just yet.

Is it just because my body isn't used to the exercise? Am I burning more than I think I am at work? I have no idea!

Active job and porridge and a cuppa soup?

Yeah, it's because you've gone far too low in calories.

You're right, your DP is wrong.

Eat more than you're eating, or you will break and binge eat.

Get a fitbit!! That will shut him up..... you are active!

DerelictWreck · 21/03/2018 17:34

Jesus a cuppa soup is not enough to see you through! You need proper protein and good fats to keep you full, not rehydrated cardboard in water!

sharkirasharkira · 21/03/2018 23:04

I have a Fitbit! I did 13,000 ish steps today so definitely quite active.

My porridge did have peanut butter and raspberries in it to make it a bit more substantial, and my soup had noodles in it!

I did cave after the gym and had a goats cheese panini (about 400 cal) as I just knew I couldn't last till dinner without eating again.

I'm not very good at eating in moderation I think, it's either I eat whatever I like or I try to limit myself too much. I can't seem to find a healthy balance, which is probably why I've never successfully lost weight Sad

I agree with lightly active, my job is exactly the same and my personal trainer said because there's only a bit of heavy lifting and mainly just walking/running around I should only add about 30-40% on top of my BMR to work out calories burned.
