11 nights - Cabin bag

Eliza9917 · 21/03/2018 11:22

AIBU to think I can pack for 11 nights away with just a cabin bag? We will have a washing machine. Going to Spain. Early spring.

What would you pack? I haven't seen the cabin bag yet to know exactly what size it is.

PAcking cubes are the answer: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B014VBGRR8/?tag=mumsnetforum-21

You can get SO MUCH in a small space using them.

Snowjoker · 21/03/2018 12:43

Easyjet won't let you on with a separate handbag, not unless you're on an empty flight I suppose. I carry essentials in a very small handbag, and double check it can be shoved into my hand baggae at the last minute.

FittonTower · 21/03/2018 12:43

I do it every year, we take 4 cabin bags for me, my husband and 2 children. One of those bags is full of our "travelling stuff" instead of clothes too - nappies, wipes, toys, passports etc. Easy when youre going somewhere warm with a washing machine. We each wear our jeans and hoody/jacket and take shorts, skirts and dresses that fold small! I buy toiletries at the airport or at the destination. Much less hassle all round i find.

InMySpareTime · 21/03/2018 12:43

I had a cotton bag to get the gadgets/travel docs/clear bag of liquids through the airport, then put the whole bag into my rucksack once through security (except passport and boarding card, which stayed in a pocket to the gate).
Airport shoes should be easy to remove in case they want to x-Ray them. If you have laces, wear them loose and tuck ends into the shoe.

Eliza9917 · 21/03/2018 12:47

I just looked at a couple of videos on youtube and those bags look massive, plenty big enough!

Someone is lending us bags that are the exact size for this airline, that they bought specifically. As soon as I see those I'll know what I can take. Looking at the ones on youtube though, I reckon I can get towels, more shoes than I thought, all the electronics, everything in.

We did this last year but I'm excellent at packing. As PPs have said wear bulky clothes and warm jacket for travelling. Put small handbag in larger shoulder bag. Roll items rather than packing flat. I managed to take: two handbags; pair of flip flops; pair of trainers; pair of heels; one jumpsuit; two pairs of trousers; three maxi dresses; playsuit; swimming costume; pashmina; five tops; pair of jeans; blazer; anorak; cardigan; sunglasses; sunhat and all my make-up.

RumTiTum · 21/03/2018 12:53

I do this all the time. We're travelling to Spain at Easter and travelling around by train, only taking a rucksack each, have no idea what weather will be like so need to cover all eventualities. I'm taking:

4 lots of underwear
nightshirt
1 long sleeved t-shirt
1 short sleeved t-shirt
1 jeans
1 harem joggers
2 jumpers
Turkish hammam towel (can double up as sarong)
ultra light down jkt
Pack-able waterproof
Comfy loafers
Salt-water sandals
Small shampoo/conditioner/moisturiser/toothpaste/brushes
Hairbrush
Book
sun hat
sunglasses
Phone
Purse
Travel documents
pack down rucksack (for day use when there)

I put the clothes in a packing cube and all this fits in this backpack.

I plan to do a quick wash every 4 days. Packing similar for the kids but as their clothes are smaller they can fit a couple of extra items, I'm carrying the toiletries so they can take a notebook/pens/playing cards etc. If we need anything else we'll just buy it there.

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 21/03/2018 13:04

The airline says cabin bag only, not even a handbag
just put your handbag in the cabin bag at check-in and boarding, keep it on you the rest of the time, that's what I do. I always keep essentials on me.

CrushedCornflakes · 21/03/2018 13:07

I only ever take a cabin bag. Last year I went away for a month, only took a cabin bag (small suitcase). It's easily done, and you say you'll have a washer.

GingerMcGrey · 21/03/2018 13:12

Easy. We went to Spain for two weeks, two adults, two children, only took two cabin bags.

We managed to fit in 7 days clothes each and I did two loads of washing while we were there.

We don't have special evening clothes though so it depends on how much stuff you like to take.

Stompythedinosaur · 21/03/2018 13:16

Of course you can, I only take a small bag wherever I go, I wash if I need to when I'm there.

I normally take something like:
2x dresses
3 x tops
2 x trousers
4 x underwear
Swimming costume
Travel towel
Candles
Trainers

I find packing cubes really helpful for keeping my packing contained and reducing size.

kaytee87 · 21/03/2018 13:58

No one need a bloody new outfit every evening.

Of course no one needs it, might like to though. I don't live my life just having what I need.

Roussette · 21/03/2018 14:05

Eliza yes it is two plastic bags each, but toiletries soon mount up. I saw one security guy make a woman choose which bottles she wanted to give up, as it wouldn't zip up.

Size is 20cm x 20cm (under 8 inches) and has to be zipped up..

Roussette · 21/03/2018 14:05

Correction!!!

One each equalling two for you!

Eliza9917 · 21/03/2018 14:14

Thats like the sizer of a large freezer bag? That should be ok, especially as each bottle can't be bigger than 100ml, and we can buy stuff once there.

we just did Easyjet to Venice and I was expecting to have to cram my handbag into my cabin bag, but dh realised we had speedy boarding... SB on boarding passes, this means two bags each and a queue of your own next to the rest of the hoipolloi passengers, on the bus first, and up the front stairs to the plane ;)

Then he got an email about checking the bags in and going hands free, so we did that for a tenner, we rocked up, dumped bags at handsfree kiosk and tootled off !

Security was a doddle with just my handbag and no cabin bag :o

We obviously had to wait at the other end for bag claim, but they said our bags would be off super quick and they really were. Flight was jam packed too with the Scottish Women's Rugby Team and they had MAHOOSIVE bags so we thought we'd be hanging about.

Return was the same ...rugger laydeez also on same flight again, and carousel was also signed for two other flights and hugely busy, but our flight's bags were out first. The Budapest and Dublin lot were very dischuffed as we all had to burly in from the back to get our bags :o

Also because flight was super busy, on the way out they announced free hold baggage option as they announced the gate if you wanted to do it.

So check your boarding passes, you might have the option of cabin plus handbag already.
I am going to make dh take his manbag in future, it really is helpful instead of him patting his coat pockets every five seconds for his wallet/phone/headphones/kindle Hmm

Goldmonday · 21/03/2018 14:27

If you have a washing machine then easily done. FWIW we are travelling to Spain for 2 weeks early April and will be taking no more than a cabin bag each, I made sure to book an apartment to have access to a washing machine.

And I am someone who packs A LOT of hair products and make up etc.

I am so past the days of taking umpteen outfits, only wearing a few and then having to iron the whole bleeding lot when I get home all over again.

Goldmonday · 21/03/2018 14:28

Get a cabin-sized bag without the collapsible handle if you can - they take up a huge amount of room in the bag when collapsed.

Astrabees · 21/03/2018 14:50

I keep my passport, money and ticket in a money belt and pack one small flatish hand bag in my cabin bag. We stayed in a very nice Air BNB flat on the Algarve and as most of their visitors only cam with a cabin bag they provided beach towels and lots of bath and shower stuff.

HildaZelda · 21/03/2018 15:11

Personally not a hope in hell, but then I can barely do a weekend with a cabin case. I have no idea how anyone manages a week + with one.
