What's your ten year old's bedtime routine like?

What time do they start getting ready for bed? Is it the same every night in order of what happens?

My DD is so blinking annoying....she always delays and thinks of things to put bed off!

I'm really lax about dd2s (just turned 11) bedtime routine tbh, decided to just pick my battles.

Generally I like her to be up in bed by half 9 on a school night, she sometimes takes herself up to bed earlier if she wants to use her laptop or watch a series but all electronics are off at half 9. I don't mind if she wants to read for a while after that, if she's still awake then ill say lights off at half 10 but she's generally sleeping before that.
Weekends i don't have lights off, electronics off by half 10 but she could read as long as she likes.
She's never been one to sleep early, my almost 16 yo is often in bed and asleep before dd2 is.

Lemonyknickers · 21/03/2018 16:38

No electronics during week. TV off and upstairs at 8. Then I read to him until 8.30. We all get up at 6 though so early start

We are exactly the same. My dd is always up at 6am. If I put her in bed at 8 she would be awake at 4.

Some kids are not sleepers and mine certainly isnt. I had her to the doctors many times when younger. Now I just accept it.

Payback in the teenage years Grin

Saisong · 21/03/2018 16:46

We start the bedtime routine at 7.30pm due to the amount of faffing. No screens after dinner because it just makes it worse. They need constant nagging to tidy up/wash/brush teeth/get into pjs. Hopefully in bed by 8.15pm. The 8yo reads until 8.30 and the 11yo until 8.45. They get up at 7.30am

FlashTheSloth · 21/03/2018 16:47

No tablet or screen time after 6pm. Will sometimes let him.watch TV downstairs, none in bedroom. Changed, teeth, face between 6-7, I find earlier the better as it stops the dicking about when they are using their own time. Upstairs between 7-7.30 on an evening with no clubs (about8 on evenings with clubs), we let him read, sit at his desk or play and he puts himself to bed. Usually around 8.30, sometimes after. We've found he's really good at putting himself to bed when he's tired so don't tend to tell him a certain time. He gets up 6.30-6.45, always been an early riser. DD would never put herself to bed so she has set times for lights out.

Cockmagic · 21/03/2018 16:48

DD (9) has bath at 8.30 in bed by 9am like to read for half an hour.

FlashTheSloth · 21/03/2018 16:48

Oh and wrt the dicking about, DD does it, we take them up to get ready earlier. They want to dick about, they can use their time not ours. I want to sit and chill of an evening, not be up until almost my bedtime dealing with faffing kids.

upsideup · 21/03/2018 16:50

10 year old dd and I let her sort herself out, she will normally come and tell me sometime between 8-10 that shes going to bed and I'll go in about 10 minutes later check shes in bed and kiss her goodnight.
Weekends and holidays then sometimes she is up till the early morning. Same with my 2,4 and 8 year olds we just let them decide when they are going to bed.
Bedtimes cause so much unecessary stress, they will fall asleep when they are ready.

Snowmagedon · 21/03/2018 17:13

How do you police your dc not reading? Mine will simply turn light on and read I can't sit there nor would want too..

Bedtime was 8 now it's up to bed at 8 or 8.30 and then it's up to her when she sleeps but she knows if she reads too late she will struggle on the am.
I don't and can't micro manage her any further, she is fine at school and all is well.

stressedoutfred · 21/03/2018 17:16

DS is 9, yr 4. He usually goes up about 8/8.15, reads until around 8.45. Falling asleep is another matter... however he has medical issues which impact his sleep

MegCleary · 21/03/2018 17:19

Yikes my DD is 10 and has a shower Sunday night and Thursday night. She doesn’t smell (I check) and uses a roll on deodorant daily. Wondering should she shower more Confused

LittleMyLikesSnuffkin · 21/03/2018 17:24

As long as she’s in bed by 9 if she’s got school the next day I don’t mind. We read a chapter of her book, have a chat, then I usually turn the light out after that although sometimes she doesn’t want to go to sleep then and wants to read instead so I give her another 15 minutes or so. I used to stress a lot more at her and there would be arguments but now we don’t usually have any of that she’s asleep by 9.30 usually. Massive improvement compared to the 11.30 after hours of arguing and screaming and crying when she was having a tough time last year.

StopPOP · 21/03/2018 17:24

Bath/Shower around 7/7.30, watch tv for a bit, head up about 9pm, quick de brief chat, then he reads and has the radio on till 9.30. Up about 7.30 as school is only a short walk away. That'll change come September when he has to catch a bus at 7.50 Grin Mwuhahahahah!

WipsGlitter · 21/03/2018 17:35

Ten year olds??? Getting ready for bed sat 7pm?

DS doesn't have a routine he goes up around nine and can read if he wants to until he wants to put the light out.

anxious2017 · 21/03/2018 19:41

Ten year olds??? Getting ready for bed sat 7pm?

Yes. Why is that a problem for you? It works for him, it works for us and just because he goes upstairs at 7 doesn't mean he goes to sleep.

He gets up at 6 and gets tired and grumpy.

You do realise that not every child is the same, right? It's a simple concept.

Steeley113 · 21/03/2018 20:06

@WipsGlitter I find it bizarre as well. They go bed earlier then my 5yo but according to all the other mums I speak to, I’m quite strict on bedtime Confused

FlashTheSloth · 21/03/2018 21:16

"Ten year olds??? Getting ready for bed sat 7pm?"

Yes, the key words are "getting ready" not going to bed. I get ready for bed at 7pm, or earlier, but I don't go to bed until 11pm. DS just goes to his room, he calls goodnight when he's actually going to sleep, obviously we have already been up and said goodnight properly when DD goes to bed.

I want peace in the evenings, not seeing to DCs and not being able to watch anything until 9.30-10 at night, at which point it's almost my bed time.

Snowmagedon · 21/03/2018 21:30

Why roll on deodorant.
Is it the one free of nasties.. That can cause cancer?

BoomBoomsCousin · 21/03/2018 21:39

Not quite 10 yet, but screen time ends at 8 and the head to their room, get into PJs, clean teeth etc. Settle down at 9:30 but one won't fall asleep before 10:30 so she reads until then. They have just started messing around at the 9:30 point - we may need to change things up or lay down the law. Not sure which yet.

Psychobabble123 · 22/03/2018 05:03

I too am baffled at the idea of a "bedtime routine" for a 10 yo! They are at high school imminently, where is the promotion of self responsibility?!

My 10 yo DD knows that she needs to get up at 6.15 am. Shw chooses when She goes to bed, providing it is by 10pm. Most days she goes up around 8 30 and reads for a bit other times she might watch something with us that finishes later so skips reading. She showers in the morning when she wakes up.

Genuinely not being goady, but for those that still effectively do bath and bedtime, how long are you planning to keep it up for? I just try to imagine reading to DD but she hasn't liked me to read to her since she was 6 or 7.

Myheartbelongsto · 22/03/2018 05:12

Crikey some ten year olds go to bed early. I have four, 9,10,11 and 12. Lights out at half nine. Weekends they go to sleep whenever they want.

AjasLipstick · 22/03/2018 05:27

Babble I called it that because...well everyone has a routine at bedtime! I just knew someone would mention it as though I was powdering her arse and winding her still. Hmm

It's the same as "morning routine" which I know I have! And I'm 45. Is that too old for a bedtime routine? I have one of those too!

BuzzyBuzzyBea · 22/03/2018 05:36

Getting ready usually after 8, but sometimes before if they've got stuff to sort on top of having a bath. All tucked in for 8:20ish. They can have their light on to read or whatever, but no technology at all.

DC isn't 10 anymore but that has been the routine for the past 3 years.

The reason being adults need time to watch adult stuff. Programmes really not suitable for even teenagers really.

If it's something they've said they want to watch, we're a big footballing family, then occasionally they'll be allowed to stay up to watch a game. The deal is they watch the game, any messing about its bed.

Fairly straight forward.

I know different people have different routines / bed times. I would say between 7:30 and 9pm is pretty much the norm. But you need to be careful what you watch when they're about. Say Call the Midwife wouldn't be their thing anyway, but it's not really for a child of that age.

elliejjtiny · 22/03/2018 05:41

My nearly 10 year old is upstairs at 9 and in bed by 9:15. Lights out at 9:30 although sometimes he will chat to his brother after that.

trinitybleu · 22/03/2018 05:49

Upstairs at 9 to 9:30, into bed for 10ish. Often awake til 10:30 / 11pm. We wake her at 6:30 but she comes round easily. At weekends she will lie in til about 8. She's never been a big sleeper.
