To wait until contracts are signed on house move before informing my company I am leaving?

I am in such a quandary. I have been in my job just over a year and due to personal circumstances we have decided to relocate to 100 miles away. Part of me wants to tell my company as they are great and have been very good . On the over hand, I can't leave until everything is official as I need the money and things could go wrong. Also, they would not be able to replace me until I hand my notice in. Would it be awful to hand my notice in once everything is official. I just hate the idea of being in limbo if I do tell them and it drags on for months!!!

I would deffo wait to tell them. Good luck with the move x

As long as you're giving the correct amount of notice then there's no problem.
I doubt they'd give you a heads up before giving you your notice if they were to make you redundant.

itstimeforanamechange · 21/03/2018 08:38

I think it is sensible not to tell them unless you know it's definitely happening.

agbnb · 21/03/2018 08:41

You should aim to give them the notice period n your contract. No more or less. If they needed more time, they need to change their employee contracts.

They wouldn't give you any more than the minimum notice if they had to let you go, would they?

Why do you think you may be due them any more loyalty?

That attitude belongs in years gone by when employers offered job security, fair pay, and loyalty rarely seen nowadays.

You can break a contract and give them less notice but this might not be ideal for reputation reasons or if they're the sort of org to try recover costs to cover the period of notice you should have worked.

agbnb · 21/03/2018 08:42

Also, why are you feeling in a quandary?

There is no quandary. Protect yourself first!

NoSquirrels · 21/03/2018 08:43

If you need a mortgage, and you hand your notice in before it goes through, you’ll have to accept the element of risk that your will be subject to last checks and it could get flagged.

So don’t hand your notice in too soon.

moita · 21/03/2018 08:49

Don't see how this is an issue. Wait.

RoryHatesCoffee · 21/03/2018 08:55

Of course don't tell them until it's finalised. It always baffles me when people think about putting their employer before themselves when they would never do the same to you.

specialsubject · 21/03/2018 09:29

Remember it is not contract signing. It is contract exchange.

CocoPuffsInGodMode · 21/03/2018 09:42

I agree there's no quandary here at all, you presumably have a notice period so that's what you're required to give. It's never a good idea to personalise these things worrying about how your employer will feel because there are no feelings involved. People leave jobs for various reasons, that's all.

Just generally I'd comment that giving notice too early could actually backfire on a person because of course the employer isn't obliged to just let it drag on, not knowing when the person is actually going. They could well put the wheels in motion to replace the employee during the eg one month notice period and not require you after that month meaning you're out of work and not earning!

House moves regularly hit problems so you can't be sure it's actually going to happen until it's done. Best to wait to tell your company if you can.

letsdolunch321 · 21/03/2018 09:52

Tell them when you need to.

Mindfullness · 21/03/2018 20:12

Thanks everyone for your replies, you have definitely put my mind at rest! I will until everything is completed officially and do it then x

Yes. Only tell after contracts sign3d and exchanged.

My Dais and BIL didn't do this and house sale fell through. Now they have no jobs and it's such a mess

Echobelly · 21/03/2018 20:19

Yes, and remember the house being sorted means that contracts are exchanged, not signed. Sorry if you know that/have done it before and it's obvious but I've found quite a lot people aren't aware or have the wrong idea about when a sale is through so thought it worth saying!

Mindfullness · 21/03/2018 21:18

Liquid - oh no that's awful :(

Echo belly - I didn't know the difference so many thanks for the heads up!
