To think my doctor was out of order?

So I have had a sore throat for 3 weeks, can barely swallow. I was worried it might be something worse, so I made an appointment at the doctors.

Got there, and was in and out within 5 minutes. She looked in my throat, couldn't see any evidence of a anything other than just a bad sore throat, then said 'I'll just prescribe some antibiotics anyway and see if it helps'

AIBU to think that things like these are why we have the antibiotic resistence problem?

Why did you go if you weren't after antibiotics?

IsDaveThere · 20/03/2018 18:04

What did you want her to do?

iYwQ · 20/03/2018 18:05

I went incase it was something that would need antibiotics. She actually said herself that it was probably just a viral infection, in that case I would have expected her to do nothing.

Out of order? Really?

Obsidion · 20/03/2018 18:08

So don't take the antibiotics

kitkatsky · 20/03/2018 18:10

Out of order is a bit of an overreaction. It’s likely protocol to prescribe to see if it helps after a 3 week sore throat. Tbh is prob protocol after 3 days. You don’t need to take them if you don’t think you need them

Asiaticlily · 20/03/2018 18:10

Your response should have been "I'd rather not take them if I can help it so might wait a few days to see if it clears up, can you make a note on the system so I can pick up a prescription if I don't feel better?"

There's no point accepting the prescription if you're going to complain about it.

SillySallySingsSongs · 20/03/2018 18:12

What exactly did you want then to do? If you don't want antibiotics then don't get the script made up.

InfiniteCurve · 20/03/2018 18:16

If you aren't happy don't take them.
But causes aren't always obvious and cut and dried - if you'd had the sore throat for a couple of days it'd be unreasonable but after three weeks trying to see if it responds to ABs seems reasonable...

Cornettoninja · 20/03/2018 18:17

The simple answer is not to take them.

My dr's are very big in giving prescriptions 'in reserve' with strict instructions on how long to give it before filling the prescription. They also have a machine that tests a drop of blood for infection which is also rather handy.

I would think after three weeks though you may have already passed their threshold for just seeing if it resolves itself.

I appreciate having a reserve prescription given how tight the appointment supply is.
