To feel a bit humiliated by this?

I'm travelling for work today and stopped at the Costa place at the train station to grab a quick coffee.
I placed my order (a latte) and gave them my reusable cup.

The two women at the back making the drinks started discussing my order very loudly so I and everyone else in the queue could hear: "god, what's the point in that drink? Any strong drinks in your reusable cup? Perhaps some water?" They then started laughing to each other.

I don't think I'm mega sensitive but I guess I could be (I'm not a morning person so felt at a bit of a low ebb)
But I felt a bit embarrassed and I'm pissed off because they said what they did so loudly and wtf has it got to do with them what I order?
Plus the fact it's pretty shitty service to take the piss out of paying customers when they're right there in front of you.

So AIBU to be annoyed and embarrassed or were they just letting of steam given that they work in retail and we all know that customers can be pretty annoying at times.
(To clarify, I wasn't rude or anything, I politely asked for my order when they asked me for it - though when they gave me my drink I didn't say thanks as that was after the above and I Though if they're going to be rude then why should I thank them for the coffee?)

It might be the reusable cup that's the issue. I get a latte every morning from my local Nero's with my reusable cup. There's one worker who if she serves me, pulls a face and asks me to remove the lid. She seems to think she'll catch something if she touches my cup! Just ignorance unfortunately

Fekko · 22/03/2018 08:23

I'd say 'it's not the lid germs you need to worry about - I lick the sides'

bbcessex · 22/03/2018 08:27

What??? OP, YADNBU.. what a pair of twats.

bbcessex · 22/03/2018 08:29

😂😂😂😂 cosylulu

I think you’re right though - it sound so bizarre that it could actually be them taking the piss out of some mad management ruling rather than you....

honeyroar · 22/03/2018 08:41

I'd have said "everyone can hear you, you're being very rude and you'll be lucky if I don't report this!" And left them to sweat.

Usernamealreadyexists · 22/03/2018 08:50

Awful behaviour. Perhaps tweet this post and include Costa? I always tweet about shit service and get immediate replies.

I think this might be the case. Nonetheless, they shouldn't be laughing and sharing in-jokes while serving customers.

A Costa has opened fairly recently in my area and, although I don't really like their coffee, I have to say the staff are to a man and woman super-polite, helpful and efficient. I've been pretty impressed.

Any reply yet OP? Agree it's a good idea to send link to this thread to Costa, most companies will jump when they are slated on social media.

ralfeesmum · 23/03/2018 11:09

A nice strong and fresh P45 is what both of these rude idiots need......

Usernamealreadyexists · 23/03/2018 12:36

I tried tweeting - I think they’ve blocked me. Anyone care to try?

I think I’d be too bemused to complain tbh. But if you feel upset then you’ve got every right to, of course

It wouldn't bother me either

RedHelenB · 24/03/2018 13:55

So they laughed, it's hardly the crime of the century!

esk1mo · 24/03/2018 14:02

i’ve had sort of similar from Cafe Nero. twice i have ordered a short/small latte or cappuccino for them to say “small? you know its this size right?” and show me the cup. one employee said thats coffee for a baby!

i said yes i know, its 6pm & im going to the gym, i just need a little boost. i dont need a double shot anything.

i work in hospitality and would never question someones order!

Why on earth did you feel the need to explain yourself? The obvious response is 'Can I talk to your manager please?'
