DC's school is running an Easter raffle. Tickets are sold as £1 per strip, which is put into the box folded and intact, so effectively just one ticket. No problem with this usually, however school are also selling the tickets individually for 20p each. So if you bought one each day you'd effectively have 5 tickets in there for the same outlay as the person who spent £1 in one go.
Now I don't care for the raffle prizes and haven't bought any at all yet Blush so this isn't about me feeling put out, but AIBU to think that this isn't a fair way of running a raffle?

No it's not fair!

notsmartenough · 19/03/2018 15:41

Yanbu. I went on a works outing that had a raffle like this and nobody understood why I was complaining!
I'm a volunteer in a charity shop and when someone suggested the same thing I made sure that the tickets were separated.

Katedotness1963 · 19/03/2018 15:44

Last time I was a volunteer helper at a raffle they did it the same way. Of course, I got it wrong and tore the tickets into singles, as that's five "goes" which you pay for. The organisers were pissed off at me. Everyone had to hurriedly tear all the other strips. Unbelievably, one person won 4/5 of the prizes. Did I hear about that afterwards!

irregularegular · 19/03/2018 15:45

Obviously not. But why doesn't just everyone split their tickets up?

Hadalifeonce · 19/03/2018 15:48

I am not sure if it is legal, effectively the tickets are being sold for different prices i.e. 1 'chance' of a win will cost you either 20p or £1
for the same chance; so if not illegal, certainly morally wrong.

GreenShadow · 19/03/2018 15:49

Definitely not legal. You ought to let them know it's not on.

TeenTimesTwo · 19/03/2018 15:50

YANBU. Totally crazy.

Hillarious · 19/03/2018 15:53

Is this a lottery (tickets sold over a period of time) or a raffle (tickets sold on one day only)? Don't you need a licence for the former? Or have things changed since I was on the PTA (too long ago now).

MadameMaxGoesler · 19/03/2018 15:59

Hilarious you are right: if they are selling tickets in advance they need a licence from the local authority and the tickets must contain certain information. Dob them in OP!

Yeah report it! Call 111! LTB!!

JessieMcJessie · 19/03/2018 16:04

Of course it’s not fair. Fucking idiots. In a school of all places. Somebody tell the maths teacher!

Greyponcho · 19/03/2018 16:10

Yes, there are rules about making lotteries like this fair, which is why some require a licence from the local council.
Doesn’t sound like they’re being fair tbh!

Ilovehamabeads · 19/03/2018 16:10

Well it's advertised as a raffle but the tickets are on sale all week until the draw on Friday. Perhaps I will say something then if it's possibly not legal. I'm not on the pta but I don't want them getting into trouble, it's a small school so we need all the funds we can get.
I just dont want a load of rolling eyes behind my back for being the only person to complain. It's the third year the easter raffle has been done like this and nobody has so much as raised an eyebrow.

Hilarious is right - if you are selling tickets ahead of the event you need a gambling licence. Our PTA has got one, a couple of people on the committee had to fill in forms which were vetted by the Police and Council.

We do the "strips" thing but don't sell individual tickets. £1 a strip. Tickets are not separated. If a single chance costs 20p and they are selling both individually and strips, the raffle isn't being run fairly.

Whether it's illegal I don't know. It's certainly going against the terms of the licence. There are so many parents at our school who are Police officers or lawyers that we always make sure we are 100% kosher as someone would complain.
