To empty my dyson straight into the outside bin?

Is this really bad manners? It always causes such a dust cloud when I try to empty the canister into a plastic bag first and seems an environmental waste anyway.

Not sure if relevant but I live in a terraced house with not much space between the outside bins and everyone’s front doors and windows. My neighbour uses a fancy bin cleaning company to jet wash his bin in the street every so often and he was so visibly offended when he saw me chucking the dust straight in my outside bin that I thought he might pop.

If you're really concerned about the bin men, you can always empty and then spray a little water to dampen down the dust.

I empty straight into the bin, wouldn't occur to me to needlessly put it in a plastic bag. Certainly wouldn't empty it into the kitchen bin inside the house, half the dust you hoovered up would end up back in the house.

Wrapping it in newspaper requires newspaper. We don't buy newspapers.

StealthPolarBear · 19/03/2018 14:42

We don't have newspapers

StealthPolarBear · 19/03/2018 14:43

The watrr will dry

ppeatfruit · 19/03/2018 14:44

Not even the freebie Metro ones or the ones they put through the letterbox? Weird, it makes me feel like a dinosaur. Blush Grin

StickStickStickStick · 19/03/2018 14:47

We don't get any delivered? No one here does that I know of. We lack in material to p ut down before kids do painting too - Amazon boxes have been used!

ppeatfruit · 19/03/2018 14:51

I suppose one of the washable tablecloths would be useful for you Stick.

ifigoup · 19/03/2018 14:54

This is what people used to do before plastic bin bags were invented. That’s why it’s called a dustbin!

MissWilmottsGhost · 19/03/2018 14:59

Mine goes into the food waste bin to be composted. My food waste bin is lined with a paper bag.

I do make sure I empty it carefully so I don't make a dust cloud, but that is for my own benefit rather than my neighbours, who recycle nothing, so their black bin is always over flowing, and then they sneak bags into other peoples bins I suspect they also fly tip but have no proof Angry

HuskyMcClusky · 19/03/2018 15:07

I empty mine into my kitchen bin. I put my hands down into the bin and gently release the door on the canister, then shut the bin lid.

I know this doesn’t spread dust into the house because I’d see it.

frankchickens · 19/03/2018 15:09

My cleaner keeps emptying mine into the recycling bin - no idea why she does this.

PatchworkGirl · 19/03/2018 15:30

I would also compost it. I cannot get my head around the idea of buying bags just to throw them away - it's absolutely bonkers and so wasteful. I don't bag food waste either - just rinse the bin after each collection and wash properly every few weeks.

PatchworkGirl · 19/03/2018 15:31

Should have said compost it or empty straight into the bin!

Notso · 19/03/2018 15:38

The annoying backdraft of dust is one of the reasons I got rid of my dyson.

Notso · 19/03/2018 15:43

I don't bag food waste either
Our council won't take unbagged food waste, it has to in the compostable green bags. If I had a big garden I would compost my own though.

TwitterQueen1 · 19/03/2018 15:48

All the different answers here illustrate just how confusing and varied the waste policies are!

I would put mine unbagged in the green bin, along with food items like banana skins, teabags etc, everything except meat basically.

Whichever bin you use, don't bag it - that's definitely not environmentally friendly / necessary.

boxthefox · 19/03/2018 15:53

I use a large wheelie bin size black liner for the entire bin. Everything goes in it without further bags. When ready to put out, I just tie the top of the large black sack and its enclosed within the bin.

Works for me. And the black bin stays really clean for ages too!

SluttyButty · 19/03/2018 18:05

Are some people saying that their council rules are, no black bags in the general rubbish waste bin? Have I got that right?

Justabadwife · 19/03/2018 18:14

My rubbish has to be bagged in black council bin bags as per councils snotty request.
So my dyson gets emptied into the kitchen bin (bag) and then taken straight out to the outside bin.
I used to empty it straight into the bun outside though.

honeyroar · 19/03/2018 19:28

I put lots of things straight in the bin and emptied the Dyson into it -before I realised how crap it was and got a Henry- when I had one. My binmen seem to be lever enough to push the button that upends the bin while standing upwind and not getting dust in their faces. I put the ash from the woodburner in th bin too.

Can't say I've ever spent long enough with my head in the bin to know whether it smells or not!

I think we really need to look for alternatives to plastic bags, even biodegradable ones, which don't magically disappear overnight anyway. Plus rubbish fits in your bin much better if loose.

walchesterweasel · 19/03/2018 19:35

Our council sent letters out specifically asking for vacuum cleaner debris to be bagged before putting in bin , to prevent dust blowing on bin men

MirandaWest · 19/03/2018 19:40

I’ve always emptied vacuum cleaner debris straight into the wheelie bin. Didn’t realise you weren’t meant to.

PatchworkGirl · 19/03/2018 19:43

@Notso - that's interesting about the food waste. It never occured to me that this would be an issue. I wonder why they specify this. I don't think mine care.

ReinettePompadour · 19/03/2018 19:44

Are some people saying that their council rules are, no black bags in the general rubbish waste bin?

If I use black bags they can go in the general waste but must be empty. They sell their own recyclable bags you can buy from them that must be put in the recycle waste only, theyre black/green.

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 19/03/2018 19:51

I empty my dyson in a bag, but I do it outside, so no dust in the house. I can't picture not using bin bags for the general rubbish, the bin would never be clean? We pay someone to clean our bins every month, so no risk of smell if there's a leak, I think the dust from the hoover would make quite a mess?
