To want a permanent hair dye to cover greys?

ladyratterley · 18/03/2018 19:13

Please help me wise ladies of Mumsnet!
I’m 37 and have started getting grey hairs which seem to be rapidly multiplying Hmm
I’m really struggling to find a box dye which actually covers them and is a match for my cool skin tone.
I’ve always had dark brown hair and the grey strands really show. I’ve tried using a more mid brown dye to cover them but leave a bit of depth. However I’ve just done it this week and you can still obviously see several grey hairs in my parting.
I used this dye but as my colouring is rather cool it doesn’t look great, it too warm and you can still see the bloody greys. Argh!

Should I just give in and use a dark brown?! (I really don’t want to turn one of those old ladies who dye their hair jet black! So was hoping to use a lighter coloured dye than my actual colour ITSWIM)
And anyone please recommend any brands and types of dye that actually bloody work?!

I used to use a mid brown which is a number 5. It was a garnier nutrisse one with no red tones

dementedpixie · 18/03/2018 19:19

A lighter one won't affect your darker hair colour though so you would have lighter roots and darker mid/end hair

Schwarzkopf natural black is a v v dark brown that covers my (many) greys

DO3271 · 18/03/2018 19:21

Be careful as the box colour is your hair plus that dye so a box match will make you darker. I like Garnier, I am 50% grey and it covers mine. I am dark brown.

Do you think it was this one Pixie? And did it definitely cover any greys?

I dont think you need to go black but a 7 may be to light for you which is why I suggest a 5

Fadingmemory · 18/03/2018 19:22

You could try e-color. You answer questions about your hair and the kit comes in the post

chipsandpeas · 18/03/2018 19:22

i use nice and easy medium brown to cover my greys and it does the job, i normally dark brown and it blends in well with my darker ends

Nanasueathome · 18/03/2018 19:23

Have a look at esalon
I have used them for a while now and although more expensive than boxed dyes you get from chemist or supermarket they really are very good

dementedpixie · 18/03/2018 19:23

Sorry a 7 is darker than a 5

FindoGask · 18/03/2018 19:23

I buy dye and developer separately - you need 20 vol to cover greys properly and the developer in most home box kits have a weaker concentration than that. I use Wella Koleston and lighten my hair a couple of levels.

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 18/03/2018 19:24

I can't remember the names, sorry, I hope someone will. There are websites where you can buy salon-quality dyes, much better for your hair and result. You can try to advance-search in beauty maybe? Much better than the cheap box.

ladyratterley · 18/03/2018 19:24

I don’t mind having lighter roots as my thinking is it’ll look more natural as I get greyer, as opposed to having a solid, dark, block colour. I just want to make sure the greys are at least coloured to a colour which isn’t grey! Grin

Would you not consider having highlights? That way, the grey hair could blend in with the highlights.

TheSnowFairy · 18/03/2018 19:27

I go to the hairdresser for mine, my hair is shoulder length and I was paranoid I would do a shit job. Usually lasts a good while.

dementedpixie · 18/03/2018 19:27

I was right the first time as 7 is lighter than 5, sorry

dementedpixie · 18/03/2018 19:28

I have got highlights now to disguise mine

SluttyButty · 18/03/2018 19:32

I use either Aldi or Nutrisse dark brown number 4,I can’t have anything with any warmth in it. My natural hair is dark brown and these are the only ones that cover my grey, although at 50 I still don’t have loads but what I have bother me.

ladyratterley · 18/03/2018 19:33

I’m looking at e-salon. Seems to be an offer to try it for £7 so I think I’m going to do that and give the medium ash brown a go.
Wish me luck!

I would consider highlights but I don’t like going to the hairdressers much plus I’m loathe to be tied into regularly having something expensive done.
I live in London and hairdressers are not cheap.

I did that when I was your age and covered it in dark brown, but it was a hassle to "go off" dye later, I successively died it in lighter and lighter nuances, weaker and weaker, and have now stopped (I have my natural colour now).

ladyratterley · 18/03/2018 19:57

I think that’s what I’ll do Mixture.
My mum was dark and had to dye it for years then went platinum blonde in her mid fifties. I think I’ll do similar when the grey starts to outnumber the dark hairs. At the minute I just have a sprinkling but they bother me.

Go to a hair salon, they're much better equipped to help than you with a box dye job.
