Prepay electricity disaster - would appreciate advice

Posted in AIBU for attention, sorry.

My son is a young vulnerable adults with ASD living independently. His electricity is down to single figure pennies and he's lost his prepay key. The local shop has replacement top up keys but you need a code from the supplier (Scottish Power) and they're shut until 8am Monday.

He doesn't have anyone local to go to stay with. Will his electricity cut out when the money's gone - different Internet sources say it will or it won't. He's used the emergency credit. We've ring social services and the housing association to no avail.

Any advice? Many thanks

Sauvignon thank you - it was a massive worry because the worst case scenario was that he'd have a massive meltdown and possibly self injure, or cause a breach of the peace. Thankfully he treated the disruption as an adventure - aided by finding a vintage Gameboy in his collection that had batteries in it, and treated himself to a takeaway Pizza. When I got to him this morning he had lots of clothes on and had wisely stayed in bed. He is terrified of naked flames so luckily didn't use candles (another worry!)

You're right, if people don't have experience of this kind of situation they might not be aware of the potential consequences, but luckily crisis was averted - mostly thanks to the tips provided by posters here. I am going to compile a list of 'what to do when you lose your top up key' and forward it to the duty social work team and housing support, as neither were aware of the solution and the information was not straightforward to find when I was panicking
