To think 14 isn't too young to fly alone?

Dd14 will be flying to Munich by herself over the summer to attend a language camp in Austria.

We will drop her at a London airport, and she will be picked up in Munich by the camp staff, who will drive her to the camp in Austria for 3 weeks.

I was talking about holiday plans with a few of the mothers of her school friends, and when I mentioned this they all seemed utterly horrified.

Is it unreasonable?

This sounds totally fine to me.

gingercat02 · 17/03/2018 15:27

I thought EJ didn't allow under16s to be unaccompanied by may be wrong

NotAgainYoda · 17/03/2018 15:28

It would not be a problem for either of my teens.

It might be for a few teens

For many others, I expect their parents underestimate what they are capable of; or overestimate risk. Which is a shame for their children

TalkinPeace · 17/03/2018 15:31

I flew on my own from the age of 4
I loved it

Llanali · 17/03/2018 15:33

EasyJet doesn’t allow under 14. So 14 should be fine.
I wouldn’t think twice about letting DC go.
We flew alone from 11 including changes to the group east.

TheSaviorsAreNonU · 17/03/2018 15:37

Depends on the kid.

Boarding school children regularly fly on their own all over the world from primary age.

Evelynismycatsformerspyname · 17/03/2018 15:37

Absolutely fine, it's a short flight and Munich airport isn't too big.

14 is when I first flew alone too. I'd let my kids do similar if they wanted (that bit is key) and were being picked up as your DD is.

OutyMcOutface · 17/03/2018 15:41

Seems fine to me. It’s not like she will be walking miles through the dark alone (which many 14 year olds do on a daily basis during the winter to get to/from school).

As long as the pick up is well organised and if no one is there, then the young person is sensible enough to just wait.

There are Cities that I wouldn't want my teen DD to be leaving the Airport, alone. There are places were Men will sexually intimidate etc lone Women and some teen Girls think they can handle themselves.

My middle and youngest DDs would be fine, my eldest possibly not.

Yes really. From the age of 4 onwards.
It was an absolute blast. I have only good memories of those trips
well except the one where I threw up in a guy's briefcase
I had loving family at each end and indulgent air crew in the middle.

Depends on the child but you DD sounds quite happy with the trip so encourage it!
My 2 both flew to NZ alone, one when 16, one when 15. This flight involves a stopover of around 3hrs and although they are experienced travellers neither had done this route since they were much younger. Both made friends on the journey and it only had a positive impact on them.

TalkinPeace · 17/03/2018 16:01

My parents were at opposite ends of the flight Hmm

TalkinPeace · 17/03/2018 16:03

By the way, I first flew internationally before I was two, but alone for the first time at 4
Air fares were very expensive then. Flying extra people was not feasible.

user149... Is the chip on your shoulder as heavy as it sounds? Do you two have history or are you attacking at random?

TalkinPeace · 17/03/2018 16:13

Glad you find marital breakup so funny.
Glad you find the fact that one of my parents missed out on most of my childhood so amusing.
Glad you think its hilarious that my grandparents saw me for a few days a year.

User149 Gosh you are a lovely person.

OP
I hope your daughter has a fab trip.
I like Easyjet.

nowahousewife · 17/03/2018 16:22

user why don’t you drop it, you’re not funny.
Talk* glad you have fond memories of your childhood flights.

MrsJimmyPerez · 17/03/2018 16:25

user149 do you not believe talkinpeace? My daughter (who is not talkinpeace Smile ) also flew alone fom the age of 4. There was an unaccompanied minor scheme on BA, don't know if there still is.

user1490607838 · 17/03/2018 16:26

Thanks @TalkinPeace I think I am lovely too.

And I DID love travelling alone at 15 months, but it was awkward having ask the flight attendant to change my nappy.
