Was I wrong to tell her to stay away?

So on Thursday I come in and see my colleague in early. She’s never in early so I was surprised. She then left at 10 as she didn’t feel well.

Turns out she woke up with vomiting and diarrhea so that’s why she was in early. Why do people come into work sick??? We get paid full pay whilst off sick so she wouldn’t have lost money, we’re ahead in work so it wouldn’t have mattered if she wasn’t in and I know she hasn’t taken any other sick days so she wouldn’t have got into trouble.

Next day she’s in!!! Our boss isn’t as they’ve caught her sickness and my other colleague vomited whilst driving - this colleague just got back to work this week having recovered from cancer treatment.

Anyway over she trots to me saying can you just look at this for me. I said sorry can you please stay away from me I don’t want to get sick.

Apparently she’s upset 🤷🏼‍♀️

Was I in the wrong?

That said I didn't think D&V bugs were passed on as air borne germs

Usually the D is contact & the V is contact & airbourne

SpringHen · 17/03/2018 15:27

YANBU btw

It depends on the company. Just because a company pays sick pay doesn't mean that they don't put pressure on staff to come in when they really shouldn't.

If the managers want staff to stay away when they are ill, they need to make this very clear. This almost never happens though, because of the risk of it being taken advantage of.

But I agree that if someone is ill, there is no problem telling them firmly to keep away from you.

Eh? I don't think there are 2 diff bugs making their way about the place in different ways when you get D&V, its a single organism, which causes a range of symptoms.

SpringHen · 17/03/2018 15:34

Yeeees aaaand like many other illnesses the way it is contagous varies through the life cycle of the infection.

BarbarianMum · 17/03/2018 15:35

YANBU she was. I think its highly unlikely to be IBD - I have Crohns and I tell people if Ive been off with it precisely so they're not worried they're going to catch anything from me.

theeyeofthestormchaser · 17/03/2018 15:35

Op, you were not rude. She was being insane coming in.

Serin · 17/03/2018 15:44

OP, I don't think you were rude actually.

She was far worse for not caring that she could infect others.

I feel particularly sorry for your colleague recovering from cancer.

OutyMcOutface · 17/03/2018 15:48

I would have done the same. I don’t see what right she has to be upset.

Byebyebye · 17/03/2018 15:49

Chelle

I’ve taken sick days and we aren’t pressured to come in. It’s just hope you feel better soon see you when your back. When your back in you have a quick meeting to check if you need any extra help/reasonable adjustments or if the job is having an effect on your health. Our boss has had a number of health issues (heart attack, surgeries etc) and understands the need for time off as she has had it herself.

I had food poisoning a few years ago. I couldn't leave my home I was so ill. My mum delivered a few things I needed. She knocked on my door, left the bag outside my door and stood the other side of the garden gate. I have no problem with that. We didn't know it was food poisoning until I was well enough to go to the doctor and get my poo tested. I could have been very contagious and passed it onto my mum if I had gotten near her. So in my opinion wandering if it could be food poisoning is irrelevant. Until you have a proper diagnosis you need to stay away from people with those symptoms. My food poisoning episode was really miserable. So if I can avoid getting similar symptoms by not being close to ill people. I will.
