Mariam Moustafa

Forgive me as I don't know how to do links. Has anyone heard of the story of Mariam Moustafa, an 18 year old Egyptian girl, who died on Wednesday after being attacked by a gang of girls in the city centre a month previously. It's a very upsetting story, exacerbated by the lack of coverage and outrage. I will try to summarise what I know. She was verbally abused by a group of 8 to 10 girls, who'd she'd had previous problems with, while visiting a shopping mall. She tried to board a bus to escape but they followed her and continued the abuse. When she got off the bus, they followed her and proceeded to beat her until she lost consciousness. She was discharged from hospital after five hours but readmitted after suffering a bleed to the brain the next morning. She died after a month. Since then only ONE girl has been arrested and bailed.
This probably bothers me the most because I have a ds her age and he was 'jumped' a couple of years ago. Two ladies risked their own safety and intervened. They called the police and then us. I'm so grateful to them. The police were fantastic although had the advantage that my son knew the boys. I can't believe no one protected Mariam on a busy street. Moreover I can't comprehend in this day of CCTV and social media, that these girls have not been identified. It makes me think of the Stephen Lawrence who really only got some kind of justice because the newspapers (give the Daily Mail some credit) wouldn't give up.
This has caused mass outrage in Egypt, where people are convinced that Mariam was treated differently because she is Muslim. I don't actually believe that but undoubtedly the police investigation is shocking and we should all be outraged.

It's a disgusting story but has been widely covered. I have read about it online and in several papers. I also saw the CCTV from the bus. I really can't believe they have only managed to arrest one person. I hope they find them and manage to get justice for her.

MissEliza · 17/03/2018 12:17

It got a lot of coverage yesterday. I haven't heard anything today.

Yes I read about it yesterday, it’s absolutely appalling. Poor Mariam, I wish her loved ones strength to bear the loss.

Shiningautumnoceancrashing · 17/03/2018 12:30

Terrible story but, sadly, the lack of outrage is because she was a woman. Murdered women aren't big news in the UK.

FencingFightingTorture35 · 17/03/2018 12:39

I've only seen one story about it. It's devastating. I feel so sad for her family.

I'm not sure that I agree in that if it was an 18 year old white, English girl, the papers would be all over it. The Sun and the Mail would be frothing themselves silly. A Muslim girl clearly matters less to society. It's important to call it what it is. Sad

Deadwood58 · 17/03/2018 12:44

When I saw a headline about it, it said "Egyptian girl" or something like that, so I assumed it had happened in Egypt.

I could not believe that something this horrific could happen in this country, and no one has been brought to justice.

Backingvocals · 17/03/2018 12:44

I did think there hadn’t been much coverage of it given the severity of the crime and the unusualness of the crime - woman murdered by a gang of women or so it seems. I don’t even know if it was potentially a race hate crime - that’s how little I’ve seen about it.

MissEliza · 17/03/2018 13:12

What kind of society do we live if a girl can be beaten by a gang in the city centre, no one intervenes and then the police don't do everything in the power to bring the criminals to justice?

Toddlerteaplease · 17/03/2018 14:11

I live in that city. It's had loads of coverage. Very sad.

lizzie1970a · 17/03/2018 14:15

I've seen it and thought how terrible, poor girl. I thought perhaps the people that did it are under 18 so that's why we haven't heard yet of arrests.

TakeMe2Insanity · 17/03/2018 14:19

Horrible story. I only found it tucked away in the news. She deserves more coverage.

soulrider · 17/03/2018 14:20

The timeline has had an impact on coverage I expect. She went to hospital, was discharged, then readmitted and died 3 weeks later.

They really wouldn't.

Fekko · 17/03/2018 15:25

I've seen a fair amount about this horrific story in the news this week - bbc online, the times and evening standard.

I hope they get the lot them and deal very harshly with them.

MissEliza · 17/03/2018 15:41

Toddler I'm glad it's had lots of local coverage as that's essential to getting people to identify culprits but I don't get why only one person has been arrested when there is CCTV.

Shocking.
Appalling.

Her sister too had been attacked apparently.
What a terrible world we live in.

My deepest sympathy to her family.

icedtea · 17/03/2018 15:50

The lack of coverage (and lack of outrage here on Mumsnet) is due to ethnicity. If she had been a white English girl it would have been a different story.

BeetlebumShesAGun · 17/03/2018 15:54

It’s awful. I’m local to there, it seems we have problems at the moment with race-related crimes - there was a case the other week about a university student being subject to racial slurs as he walked the corridors. Disgusting.

Sadly l’m not surprised. I always jump to my home’s defence, but I have been in town recently and the amount of scumbags on the streets, especially teenagers, causing problems and abusing random strangers in the street alarmed me.

A friend at work’s nephew was killed last year, in a gang attack (case of mistaken identity).

The most awful thing is that there were 10 girls, lots of witnesses, CCTV. The police have been appealing for people to come forward if they know anything but clearly not enough people have. Someone knows these girls. I hope they find them and throw the book at them.

fuzzywuzzy · 17/03/2018 16:02

I read about this yesterday, I only saw it via social media.

There really has not been much coverage, I think it is now gaining momentum as social media outlets are spreading the story.

Really hope the women involved are found and face the consequences.

TooManyMiles · 17/03/2018 16:09

It is a stain on our society.

I am glad you brought this up because I did not see it in the news or papers. It must have been there somewhere but it does not seem to have been talked about over and over day after day like other news stories are. I hope witnesses come forward.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 17/03/2018 16:14

Sorry, is this correct? Egypt is a Muslim majority country and Muslims generally have privilege there. Are you sure this is right?

TooManyMiles · 17/03/2018 16:15

From www.rt.com/uk/421493-police-mariam-moustafa-killed/

“We know there were a lot of people standing at the bus stop when the assault happened and we’re urging them to please come forward with any information which could help us,” he said, the Times reported.

It is awful to think people were there and saw but did not even report it. Just dreadful.

fuzzywuzzy · 17/03/2018 16:17

EltonJohn the assault and subsequent death of Mariam Moustafa happened in England.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 17/03/2018 16:19

Ah, just googled and seen was in Nottingham. Wasn’t clear from OP.
