In being surprised adult can get asthma?

Just been told I have adult onset asthma after X-rays and blood work.

Everyone I've mentioned it to said it's not possible to just suddenly develop it as an adult and it's something you have from a child.

I've been referred to an asthma centre next week to test for allergies and discuss treatment. Treatment?! I'm a little in shock and don't really know a thing about asthma. Googling it briefly scared the living piss out of me!

I've got a horrible suspicion after having cats all of my life I've just become allergic to them. Sad

Anyone else have adult onset asthma? Or suddenly develop an allergy to their beloved pet?

Dh is being really 'oh well it's not anything serious at least' which is pissing me off a little as I feel it might be and I'm going taking steroids for a few months in the best scenario. Angry

At the gin part not the dying part!

Thanks for all you others. I'll normally quite hardy but it is a little nerve wracking!

Can I just also say - if you do exercise or any sport use the blue inhaler about half an hour or so before you do it. I do a lot of gym stuff and running and I find if i use my blue inhaler before I go regardless of how I feel it really helps with my overall achievement and breathing.

ivykaty44 · 16/03/2018 21:53

It will become more and more common unfortunately as pollution levels rise

SamHeughansCephalicVeins · 16/03/2018 21:55

I developed it awhile after having viral pleurisy (a lot less serious than bacterial pleurisy). Luckily for me it's a mild case - I really feel for others who have it badly. It mainly crops up in Winter when I get coughs & colds.

Some people say a supplement called NAC (I think? You can get it on Amazon) can help, although I've not researched it or tried it.

I do use a ceramic salt inhaler throughout the Winter now as a preventative measure & it has helped a lot. Having enough inhalers about the house/handbags etc helps me feel less panicky.

Bobbiepin · 16/03/2018 21:55

Oh and avoid NSAID drugs (ibuprofen, naproxen etc). They are known to aggravate asthma symptoms.

shesalady · 16/03/2018 21:55

Thank you @Fairylea I can't even climb the pissing stairs at the moment without coughing until I fall over.

What is the blue one? I'm in the States and not sure they follow the same colours?

ivykaty44 · 16/03/2018 21:57

Fairyl if you’re using the blue inhaler in this way you may be best to visit the asthma gp at your surgery and tell them you’re doing this. It doesn’t sound like your asthma is being controlled

shesalady · 16/03/2018 21:57

I take shit ton of ibuprofen and naproxen for a bad foot and heavy periods. Bugger bugger bugger.

I was the same! I couldn’t even finish a sentence without coughing a year ago. Now I’m doing 3 dance cardio sessions a week and training for my first 5k race...! Honestly with the right treatment your life should be completely different.

wfrances · 16/03/2018 21:59

i was 41 diagnosed ,dh just diagnosed at 46
dd has had it since she was a baby .

brownelephant · 16/03/2018 21:59

yep, it's not unknown.
and it is very possible to 'suddenly' become allergic to anything, so unfortunately I would think of rehoming your cats and to deep clean your home (washing all soft furnishings, vacuuming everywhere, damp dusting)

Fairylea · 16/03/2018 21:59

Thank you ivykaty, I will do that I think. I did mention it to them before though and they said as long as you’re not having to use it multiple times a day or waking up in the night needing it then you’re probably on the right inhalers.

shesalady · 16/03/2018 21:59

@SamHeughansCephalicVeins thank you! Just ordered the salt inhaler and will look in to the nac.

Atrubol is the American version of the blue inhaler.

I would talk to the nurse next week about painkillers, research now suggests most asthmatics are fine with ibuprofen so as you take it anyway it will probably be a case of continue with caution

brownelephant · 16/03/2018 22:00

wrt to nsaids, some asthmatics can take them, but a medication review with a pharmacist/gp would be a good idea.

drspouse · 16/03/2018 22:03

I got it in my 40s, and it is cough variant so similar to you.
The blue inhaler is the short acting reliever - if you are using it 3-4 times every day you need to think about a steroid inhaler (preventer) and/or a long lasting reliever.

shesalady · 16/03/2018 22:03

Now I've had tests done at least I can go out without people running away from me or making the sign of the cross.

My doctor thought I had tuberculosis but I told him it wasn't possible as I'd had my tb jab. I don't think he believed me so i showed him my scar and went in to great detail about how septic it went because the boys kept punching everyone on their scar sites.

Two people actually got up and left the room after glaring at me at the hospital today and I was wearing a bloody mask! May have been the pee smell though.

TheFaerieQueene · 16/03/2018 22:05

I developed asthma at 40.

shesalady · 16/03/2018 22:06

Ah albuterol is the one I have. And what I have for the nebuliser. I'm using it every 3 hours.

The prednisone is a strong steroid I think but just for five days. Not sure what the inhaler tomorrow is. I know it costs $300 though so it had better be bloody magic and make me high too. Joke. Kind of.

Pollution.

TalbotAMan · 16/03/2018 22:07

Finally diagnosed about 54, though I had a tentative diagnosis at around 35 (GP's opinion but no proper testing). My asthma nurse at the time said that the oldest she had diagnosed was 72, and that my history of terrible colds and at least one bad chest infection a year since forever meant that it had been there probably since childhood.

shesalady · 16/03/2018 22:07

Is it possible for alcohol to make it worse? I swear a couple of glasses of wine make me cough a ton more.

If I have to get rid of my cats and stop drinking... well I don't know what I'll do.

I developed fairly severe asthma around age 20. Im now 28. Take it seriously...i have been out without inhalers and been scared i would pass out through taking such little air. My husband has carried me into a and e blue lipped and limp from forgetting my inhaler on holiday. My husband worries...im much better now and have an inhaler in every bag. Please take it seriously and take the meds...try and work out triggers and control them. Stay safe.

shesalady · 16/03/2018 22:08

I lived in London most of my life. Fucking irony it comes on when I move to the absolute arse end of nowhere. My poor lungs are probably in shock.
